My wife watches Bethenney Ever After on Bravo. In one scene on tonight's episode (3/14/11), she's taking a picture with a white Pentax dSLR. (not sure which model.)

Maybe Pentax has new viral marketing campaign.

Both are Class 6 Adata. One was from Microcenter and the other from Amazon. I'll just format them and see if the problem appears again.

Thanks for the responses.

I'm not sure. :o

I have 2 - 8 gb cards that I swap out. Not sure which card I used for this pic.

Assuming I can figure out which card it is, is there anything I can do "fix" it?

I took this at my kid's baseball game. Had approximately 5 out 250 shots like this. (I'm a little heavy on the shutter. My car has 23k miles in 1yr. I believe in using stuff :D) Had never seen this before. Haven't seen it since. Was the camera having a Brooks Conrad day?

I would use the Tamron. It's way more versatile in this environment.

Get close, even with the Tamron.

I doubt the tripod will be of much use; too much going on. Plus you'll want to be walking around.

How old are the kids? Try to get down to their eye level to take shots. Also, if possible have someone watch your daughter. It's difficult to split your attention between watching your kid and taking pictures.

For the jumping castle shots, experiment with a slower shutter speed and/or no flash. You'll get motion blur to convey the energy of the kids.

Use the Hi Continuous Mode.

Take a lot of pictures.

Walk around to get different vantage points of the same thing.

For the shot with the mayor, slow down, shot lots and lots of pictures. Maybe shoot RAW.

Autofocus.

Shoot lots of pics.

Share the pics with people; the stuff that we think looks like crap, other people appreciate seeing. I shoot my kids soccer and baseball games and I send some photos to the parents following the games. The parents love the pics (or they're lying to me :0) and appreciate the ability to share the pics with their friends.

Enjoy it.

Bring extra batteries.

My wife is a non-profit event planner who has a blog. (By non-profit, I mean she plans parties for friends for free.) She had me take pics for her blog and events for the first couple of months. Then I showed her how to use the camera to take her own phots. I also dropped hints that with some better lens, she could take more creative pics.

Plan worked like a charm. She loves the Sigma 18 - 50 2.8 macro that I picked up to photography one of her events. Haven't heard a word of complaint about how much was spent.

Try to get there early and stake out a spot close to the stage; don't rely soley on the long end of the zoom to get you close to the action.

Just got back from the beach. The only times I took the KX was to shoot a sunrise and to try some shots of a full moon. During the day I just took my P&S. The KX was too much potential trouble with 2 small kids, beach stuff, toys, etc.

Pentax K-x: Slow focus!

Live View seems to focus more slowly in all conditiions so I don't use it except to let my kids take a shot. .

The shutter is a bit loud at first. You get used to it quickly however. I've had my camera for 7 months and haven't thought about the shutter sound since the first couple of weeks.

The KX is great camera.

Did you see how much grief the reviewer @ DPS got from the Pentax crowd for his first review of the KX?

What age range are the kids you're shooting? My kid is 6 and there's not a great deal of action in pee-wee ball (one step up from tee ball). I use the KX with the 55 - 300 kit zoom. It an be a bit slow to focus but b/c the kids aren't movng quickly, it's fine for my purposes. Also, we play during the day.

external hard drives

This is from Microsoft:

Mac users benefit from almost all of the capabilities of Windows Home Server. Mac users can access Windows Home Server as a file server and have the ability to view and save files to shared folders. Mac-based computers can also remotely access Windows Home Server. Although the Windows Home Server automatic backup functionality is only available for Windows XP and Windows Vista computers, Mac users can run their own backup software that redirects backup files to the home server. Note: The HP MediaSmart Server includes Mac backup functionality.

WHS isn't just a software package that you install on your PC to automate backups. It requires it's own dedicated PC in order to run. You can build your own WHS system using an older PC or you can purchase a pre-built system. (I have a pre-built the HP MediaSmart Server) In either case, you have to install software on the machine that will be backed up.

Can I suggest a Windows Home Server? It costs more than an external drive but it will automatically backup multiple computers on a schedule that you set, stream music, act as a file server, etc.

I've been very happy with mine and it worked like a charm when I had to move move my data to a new hard drive.

No Magic Lantern for K-x

I've been having some shooting issues lately with my K-x. (100% user error) So I thought I'd pick up the Magic Lantern guide for the K-x to help resolve some of the questions I'm running into. (You guys are great but it's nice to have something a little more real time. :) )

Unfortunately, there isn't a guide and according to the publisher, there are no plans to publish a guide for the K-x. :(

Just wanted to give everyone a heads up.

I encountered "Pollen Fest" on a recent vacation. Viewfinder, LCD, lens hood were all coated after a few minutes outside.

I can't see in issues in subsequent shots but I was wondering if I should have the sensor professionally cleaned as a pre-caution.

Thanks

Thanks for the feedback. I was on a moving tour boat a sunset so it was hard to keep steady. I didn't want to go above 400 iso b/c of noise concerns. I also tend to shot this lens wide open b/c the faster shutter speeds help to compensate for shaky hands.

Maybe I'll call it an impressionist image :0)

Use the Exposure Compentsation button to increase the brightness of the pic. (it's the one with the +/- on the top of the camera.)
Note:Increasing the exposure will likely mean that the shutter speed will be slower and the pics will appear to be blurred. Increase the ISO level to 1600 or 3200. This will should allow a shutter speed fast enough it freeze motion.
