Poor after sales service.

After my recent experience with a camera sent for repair, I have finally had it with Pentax Cameras. My K3ii developed what looked like aperture motor failure a month ago, after having experienced several other minor faults such as erratic exposure, mirror slap and camera freezing, not focussing, or just focussing and NOT shooting! It was purchased from SRS microsystems who are very good and very helpful. I sent the camera back to them and they sent it back to Ricoh-still under warranty as it was only purchased in February 2016.

A week later I got a reply saying I would be charged £91 for repair! I queried this because they were suggesting I had damaged the camera in some way as there was evidence of water ingress. Now, I have to say that I actually know the difference between weather proof and waterproof! I have never misused the camera, dropped or submerged it anywhere, or been out in rain without a weather sealed lens. Even more shocking was the fact that SRS stated that this was actually a REDUCED repair charge after they pointed out to Ricoh the camera was weather sealed!

There was NO way I was going to pay for a repair that should have been honoured under warranty, especially I had not damaged the camera. After 3 weeks and not hearing anything, I emailed SRS stating that Ricoh were in breach of contract for not honouring their warranty and according to the Consumer Rights act the onus on Ricoh was to prove 100% that I had caused this fault. 48 Hours later I had an email from Ricoh that they could not prove I had done anything to the camera and as "a gesture of good will" they would honour the warranty!

I am really angry about this statement, insulting and patronising. A complete farce. I think Ricoh staff really need training in customer service and learn to issue an apology when they are wrong in their judgement. Needless to say I have had enough. My lenses are being sold, and when I get the body back that will be sold too. I shall also pass on this story to Which?.

So all readers of this beware if you need after sales service from Ricoh. They seem nothing more than scammers, trying to wriggle out of their Warranty obligations, and accusing customers of careless handling/damage, when in actual fact the cameras are at fault. Their boasts about the fantastic weatherproofing are dubious to say the least (besides all the other faults with it!). So goodbye Pentax and good luck to all here.

exposure/metering problems

I wonder if the metering issues are a forewarning of a more serious problem. The metering on my camera has now failed completely-ISO, Aperture and shutter speed flashing (stuck on 30 seconds) and exposure compensation resetting to -5! Now the camera only operates in Bulb mode-all other modes are useless and c/w, matrix and spot metering won't work. Had previous issues with mirror slapping and some really overexposed shots which were not my fault but some terrible metering inaccuracy-one shot fine and then two others or more sometimes overexposed by 2 stops+ (and no exposure compensation set). Very disappointing for a camera only purchased in February. Even a firmware update made NO difference. Now very dissatisfied with Pentax-for such a new camera to have so many faults is unforgiveable. It's very lucky I was not using the camera for important stuff like a wedding. To be fair, I have never had any issues with previous cameras-the K30 was used for 5 years with no faults-but to roll out a "flagship" camera which is so unreliable is simply unacceptable. The after sales service leaves a lot to be desired, to say the least, and I am now going to either demand a complete refund or that they replace the body with a K70-that's if I ever hear from Ricoh! Failing that, I will be switching to a Sony RX10iii as even my 16-85 lens has had issues with overexposure-what a complete waste of hard earned money, let alone spoiled photos which I travelled a fair way to take. Either way, it appears that with the K3ii Ricoh are NOT providing goods that are actually fit for purpose of sale!

DA* lenses are they built to last ?

My DA 16-50 SDM has failed after 14 months. The estimate for repair is £89 besides having to pay postage to send it back! The fact that this costly lens has developed a fault like this after such a short life is unacceptable!

I'm going to either ger a 16-45 or Sigma 17-70 now with a new lens a much better option.

Don't buy the DA 16-50-its a waste of hard earned money.

Many thanks.

Being totally thick, I didn't think it was the lens! What a poor
If the cost of repair is more than £50.00 then I will NOT be pleased. For me this was a big investment.

This is the first time I've had a fault with any lens, and I'm not pleased that its happened with the most expensive lens I've ever purchased with hard earned cash, and only after 14 months. I won't be wasting money on Pentax lenses in future!! (And they always get poor reviews compared to all other independent makes anyway!) If the cost is over £50.00 then I will kiss it goodbye and get a Sigma-top quality, more within my budget and reliable, a make everyone can trust!!

I am really starting to wonder whether investing in Pentax was a good idea!

And to all others looking for a standard lens-DO NOT purchase the DA 16-50. It is true what I have read about quality control issues and faults.

Corrupted Fimware?

I installed Firmware version 1.3 on my K10D 3 months ago and it has been OK until today when suddenly the DA 16-50 has suddenly become noisy again with whirring autofocus noise as it was before the firmware upgrade.

What do I do next-reinstall, or is there a fault with the camera? Do I simply flash a lower version, and if so, where can I find the download that will actualy work?? (it was difficult enough getting version 1.3).

Many thanks.

Could someone please tell me exactly how to install it? I have downloaded the bin file for V1.30 and tried to copy it to the memory card as instructed. This doesn't work, despite the card folder showing the copied file. Nothing happens when I put the card in the camera-there is no download or anything else happening. Why???

The card is a formatted 1gb SD Card.

Many thanks,

Mark
