No I'm envious. I've been drooling over the K-5s for a while.
I've been thinking maybe I should wait on the lenses and go with a k5 instead.
Then on top of the $1500 price tag, I add a vert grip, 3 extra batteries, etc. And it's now inching towards $1,800! Don't have that much to part with (she'd noticed an extra $300 "missing") :D
And, I know I'll "need" the glass.

I know that I should like primes. I know they are better, but I do like zooms (good ones, mind you).
True that this would be in my price range, but that then rules out the 18-135mm lens for a while b/c it is about $500 by itself. And having a gap between the 30mm to my 40mm seems like a bit of stretch.
So anyone on the Sigmas? How about that 135-400mm I found?

I do like new glass.
I would like the 300*, but that would put me out of my price range, right?
Also, I do like the ability to frame with a zoom.

But the 60-250 with a TC drops AF right?
I've heard that the Tamron 70-200mm f.28 is noisy. Also it doesn't have the matched TC's like the Simga does. Maybe I'm grasping at straws here.
Does anyone like the long reach zoom Sigmas?
Update: Just found a cheaper Sigma (non-hsm) 135-400mm for $500 - ideas?

Done! (thanks)
I've thought about this alot. But they seem to be a bit rare these days. I've been poking around here, Adorama, KEH, and B&H (also ebay) and haven't seen many non-hsm versions.

Oh, forgot to mention (sorry, brain is fried these days), I also have a sigma 10-20mm.
Don't think I'll be getting rid of the 40mm, its just such a fun little lens. And I like it teamed up with the Raynox for a quick macro.
Oh, and currently I'm using a K20D
I like the weather sealing on the 18-135mm. Don't have a WR lens yet. Have a ton of times it would have been nice when I was using minolta.
I like 70-200mm f2.8s, but I'm really frustrated that HSM don't work with TC's on Pentax. (at least consistently). I found with my minolta that I really like the 400mm range (had a tokina 80-400mm - which appears really rare for pentax).

I've been using a Pentax for a little over 18 months now. Moved from a Minolta 7D after they sold to Sony.
I've been coping with the kit lenses for a while (money was tight) and now have a bit (because of severance!) and this is what I'm looking at:
18-135mm Pentax DA - the new one
120-400mm Sigma HSM
40mm Pentax DA limited
(with Raynox DCR-250)
10-20mm Sigma
I don't take picture of people as a rule. I deal with them too much every other day of the week. :D I tend towards landscapes and wildlife. So what do people think? Are there any holes that I'm missing. I have the 40mm & 10-20mm already and want to keep prices below $1,500 total.
I think my major question is between the 120-400mm sigma & the 150-500mm.
Thanks for your ideas and help.

I went from Minolta to Pentax (minolta made the alpha before sony bought it)
I do miss some of the Minolta glass (500mm AF Cat, the "beercan")
But I've found that there are good lenses here also.
I do miss how my 7D held both batteries in the grip.

Well, you all have given me much to think about. I think right now, I might go with the Raynox and see what I think about it. I do like the DA40 for everything short of it's min focus range (and yeh, if it was f1.4, that would be great, but then I'd like to be 25 lbs lighter - we can't have everything). It's speed and compact nature (and picture quality) make it a real fun lens to have.
I already have a nice-ish Sigma 50mm macro and just picked up a 10-20mm, so I think this will work for a reasonable kit for a while.
I really appreciate the input again.

I think it's the non-dg.
Yeh, I guess at that price point, I'm not in for too much. I guess I should mention that there is a little chip in the front element, but it doesn't seem to affect pictures.

I found a used Simga 170-500mm for under $300. Now, I've heard that it tends to be soft and inferior to the Bigma and primes, but for $300, do you think it's worth it?
All I have in my bag now is a 50-200mm DA (for telephotos) - would really like something longer. Thanks for your opinions.

Huh, hadn't thought of using the DA40 + a raynox 250 - anyone seen any pics from this combo. Neat though. Certainly alot cheaper! (which I like!)

I do like the speed of the da40 - but I guess I really don't take pictures of people (deal with them too much at work). I appreciated the insight, one more thing to consider.

So I really do like my 40mm lim pancake as my general walk around lens, but it doesn't focus as close as I'd like sometimes. So I've been thinking of replacing it with the 35mm macro (I try to keep my kit light & strapped for cash more often than not). So, I'd like to hear from people who have had both - do you notice a change between them? Anything that I would loose / gain by the swap? Any other info I should know? Thanks ahead of time.

Love the shots! Want to try the combination myself after seeing your work.
Wish the Kenko tube was easier to find.

Any more information / ideas on this topic?
I'm really trying to decide between a 70-200mm f2.8 vs a 150-500mm / 120-400mm.

Personally, I would go with the 35mm lim macro just because it is a macro and can go dual purpose when I want to pack light.

I've had it before for another mount (Minotla) and it was my go-to lens for macro and portrait. Loved it then (and looking for one now). It even did ok with a 2x TC to go to 180mm (then to 270mm with the APS-C factor)

I was kinda afraid of that. Does anyone have a second experience that Sigma HSM + TC does not work?
Unfortunately the 60-250mm is not fast enough with a 2x TC to keep AF.
How was your Tamron for noise while focusing? Did you find it quick enough with the TC?

I came to Pentax with my K20D, but I've always had a lot of respect for the brand. I am little frustrated that Pentax zooms top out at 250mm (as many have said before). So this is what I'm looking at, I just bought a Quantum 2x teleconverter which looks like it has the contacts for the SMD / HSM function (actually for the older power zoom functions, I think).
Can I use this (AF) with the Pentax-mount Sigma 70-200mm HSM 2.8?
(wish the Sigma teleconverters worked with HSM  )
If not, does anyone know how well the Tamron 70-200mm 2.8 works with a 2x?
My only other reprieve would be to buy a Sigma 150-500mm HSM. I would like the HSM function if at all possible just for the quiet focusing to not scare birds (what I'll be shooting).
I rarely print larger that 11x14 in, so that will give you an idea what sharpness I need.
Thanks for any help!
