Welcome back after a long time:) This macro season I decided to learn some new techniques. One of them was shooting in natural light using many blendes (reflectors) and second one wast taking shots in a great magnification. This are the effects:)

Wow, thanks a lot for Your opinions:) I'm very happy You like my shots:) dannyb quite interesting suggestion:)
My main goal for this season is taking pictures in natural light. This task ain't no easy, but I'm still learning, and here's some samples from yesterday:)
Polyommatus icarus 1.
icarus 2.
Icarus 3.
Icarus 4.
Icarus 5.
For this pictures I used the Tamron 90/2.8, and one blende made of a white paper:)
Another technique I use is combining natural light with a fill flash. Usually I use Sigma 70-300 APO attached to 3 extension tubes (for lowering the focusing distance) and Metz 48AF-1 at 1/8-1/16 flash power with a diffuser. Result is shown below:)

There is still winter in my country, so there is no way to take some new macro pictures. Thats why I'm looking for new subjects to my photos. Today I bought 5 balloons, filled them up with water, and after 4 failed photos I took this one :)

The quest for the max magnification ratio:D
I used old russian M42 bellows, old russian 2x M42 teleconverter, and reversed Pentacon 30/3.5. Magnification is simply enormous, but I guess it's hard to take photos in a meadow for example:/

AF doesn't work with Tamron 90/2.8 or any other lens I have.
I got no SDM lens, so I can't say if AF works with it :(
I can take large picture of the tubes, so You can check out contacts on them:)

It's no so simple to answer Your question. Taking pictures of insects in flight is not that kind of photography You do everyday with great results.
I spent a lot of time learning dragonflies habits. They fly on the specific territories stopping from time to time. A key to success is to find out where they fly most often, and where they stand still.
Autofocus is useless, the only way to take a good, sharp picture is to use manual focus. I use the extension tubes to get closer to a dragonfly (lower focusing distance, but the lens can't focus to infinity)
Summing up there is no such a tutorial that can be used in every situation. Everything depends on a observation and the patience:) But it's worth to try...
