I received my collection of G Series lenses for my Nex7 this week (28,45 and 90) and have been playing with them when possible. When possible has been a quick run out to the garden during my lunch hour at home. Not even sure which lens did what at this point. Hope to get some time with them this weekend.

So far I'm happy with the focusing system considering how it is a bit of a kludge. But the quality of the lenses and the glow and bokeh give me a happy. Not great shots but they give me an indication of the possibilities when I have time to get out and shoot. It's a bit of a pain to use cornerfix on the 28 shots but well worth the effort in the end.

Great Shots Emacs (although I'm better with vi).. Love the sky shot..

All I have to say after tonight is I'm not regretting switching to the Nex. Went to see my absolute favorite musical artist James McMurtry tonight in Roanoke Va. He's the best songwriter around IMHO. Took my Nex7 and my MD 50 1.4. Sitting on the 4th row, these are right out of the camera jpegs.

I left the friendly folks here almost two years ago and went to Nikon. Well I'm dropping the Nikon and going fully to the Nex system with a Nex7. I'm loving being able to use all of the old pentax glass with it.

And it gives me an excuse to hang out with you fine folks again..

I've owned quite a few lenses in the last few years including some of the limiteds and some fine Nikon zooms. I think that the SIgma 19 & 30 are as sharp as those lenses. Not quite the color pop but they still blow my mind.

But this one doesn't show the performance. I just liked the look of this one right out of the camera on monochrome mode. Too shallow DOF and terrible light actually worked IMHO.

Then I got home and saw a little bluebird in a redbud. Went in and grabbed my old Takumar 200F4. The Nex7 should not be considered a camera as much as it is a digital back..

I've been boring everyone with bee shots with my 16-45 lately. Well I got a Raynox a couple of weeks ago but since I've been on the road I haven't had a chance to play with it, until today. Probably the best 43.00 investment I've made in a while.. DCR 150 & 55-300, with flash at F16-22. I'm extremely impressed..

Edit: DCR-150...

Pentax EVIL NC-1 has smaller sensor than APS-C - your opinion?

I haven't read through all 44 pages of this thread but have read it off and on.

I think that if you look at it as a typical consumer that goes to Sams Club and gets a Rebel off of the stack on the pallette (They were displayed like this last time I was there) this might be a good idea. They can have a DSLR type camera that is small enough for mom to use and has the changeable lens gadget that dad needs to look cool. All with a system with a small sensor so people in the forums don't have to explain why nothing is in focus except what we wanted to focus on. How many times do we read in the forum,"I've got a new SLR but the results don't look as good as my P&S"?

It might not be a good camera to us but it may be perfect for the typical P&S consumer looking for something cool. And if it gets someone to try Pentax then all the better.

I want a K-Mount X100..

Instead of working on building up your lens collection, work on taking better photos. Composition is much more important than equipment. Also learn to use what you have, how to use DOF and Shutter speed to change the look of a shot. I'm a bit of a gearhead myself but I have to stop myself sometimes and just relax and work on the photo, not the equipment. Photography is like sex.....it's not about the equipment.

And congratulations on the worlds longest run-on sentence. I'm impressed.

If I ever jump ship it won't be to Canon. Felt like toys. Not even considering switching to Nikon anymore. 1300.00 in car repairs took care of that!

I need to stop looking at gear, with a K-x or a D3 I'd still be a hack with a camera.

It's getting much better. BUt I changed to OSX 6 years ago when it wasn't even close. I worked with ubuntu and fedora last year for some work projects. It's getting closer to being a user OS but it still wasn't there. When it gets to the point that my wife or other typical user can install, uninstall and navigate the OS easily then I'd consider it. And there is still a shortage of polished software.

It's time to do my best to pick a winner for this weeks contest for the Color Blue. As is usual in the challenges there were a lot of great shots from the contributors. Thanks to everyone for participating and also thanks to Woof for selecting me to judge this challenge..

So here we go.

jmscrhei: Great shot, I love the subtle details in the ice and the swirling flow.

bbluesman: I love this one a lot. The other colors enhance the blues of the pants & sandals. This one caught my attention from the start.

SpecialK: Interesting shot, a subtle blue and an interesting concept, but doesn't make me think blue. Maybe oversaturating it a bit would help.

Wllm: Nice shot, I've seen it done before but I really like the composition and exposure to get the deep blue.

Tamia: Great shot of a beautiful blue sky with a nice use of empty space.

Rense: I love the shot, a beautiful abstract shot. I'm impressed with the thought and ingenuity of the photograph.

ChasinTrail: Wonderful shot of the blue flames. A Tiny bit overexposed to me, I think that it would be great with a bit less exposure.

Clou: Very nice shot, beautiful blue colors, the farthest posts look a bit strange on my computer. I'm not sure if it's the way it really looks or a characteristic of the sensor. I'd really like to know what causes that look.

MikeS: Nice shot, a bit overexposed to my eye but I really like the glow around the object that may not have been there without that exposure.

Iris: Great shot with a wonderful composition and beautiful range of blues.

JHeu02: Nice shot, I think it's a light bulb but I'm not sure. Interesting look and nice exposure.

Bramela: A bit ordinary like you said but still a nice shot with interesting subjects. But you can't earn extra points by showing my companies product in a shot;-)

tim.anderson: I like the composition and blue light coming through the holes. The blurry moon works great as well.

RamseyBuckeye Nice simple shot of a beautiful blue. Excellent exposure to get it without giving it an oversaturated look.

Honorable Mention: RamseyBuckey

3rd Place: Jheu02

2nd Place: Rense

First Place: Iris

Inexpensive lenses to try Manual Focus?

A50 F/2, you should be able to find one for next to nothing at a local pawn shop or here on the forums. Usually < 20 bucks. A surprisingly sharp little lens. The M50 1.7 is another great lens you can get for 40-50 bucks and is hard to beat. I'd go with the F/2 first since it is Auto Aperture and easier to use initially.

Here are some from the A50 F/2 in my Single In Sept Gallery

Thanks to everyone who participated in this Challenge. A lot of great entries and examples. I'm definitely not the greatest judge but I'll do my best, don't shoot me for my ill-informed opinions. I'm going to attempt to follow Iris' example and at least say a few words about what I feel about each photo. Don't take any of this stuff too seriously, I'm basically hanging out here for comic relief.

JmShrei: Nice shot, definitely shows the effects of deep focus. I think I would have liked it a bit more if the fence had a little more of an angle to show more of the fence.

Tamia: Beautiful shot but I'm not sure it has enough depth in the subject to really demonstrate the challenge. But I love the shot.

Rense: Lovely shot with great sharpness all the way through the shot. I love the shot and the diagonal flow of the water.

Casil403: Great shot, I love the sharpness of the rock and the incoming clouds. But it doesn't really demonstrate the deep focus since most of the photo is at about the same distance relatively speaking.

Danloc78: Great shot to demostrate the challenge. Trying to keep the sunflowers as well as the house in focus was a challenge and it looks like you did pretty good in making it work. A bit dark to my eye and monitor.

Jheu02: Nice shot, works showing the goal of the challenge. I really like the color of the sky reflection in the water.

Ovim: Great example of deep focus. The closeness of the apple really makes the distant objects look even farther away and everything looks to be in great focus.

Iris: Nice shot and great demonstration of the challenge. Lots of nice leading lines with perfect focus.

Bramela: Good example with a foreground subject giving it more depth. But the trees in the distance are a bit out of focus to my eye.

Tsukiouji: Interesting shot but it looks a bit out of focus. I'm not sure if it is the compression of the upload. Welcome and thanks for taking on the challenge!

Now for my choices...

3rd Place is aTie, Rense & Iris: Great shots that show the challenge well. But how could I choose my favorite?

2nd Place goes to DanLoc78: I like the shot, colorful and wonderful example of the challenge.

And this Challenge's Winner is Ovim: When I saw this I really liked it. Can't tell you why but I just love this shot and it fits the challenge well.

Thanks for all of the entries. I'm ready for next weeks.

Does in camera noise reduction actually work? I think not.

From my understanding a very low but fixed amount of noise reduction is applied in raw. The settings for noise reduction are used in Jpegs only out of the camera. If you use the pentax software the raw file contains those settings and they are applied in software on your computer by the pentax tools. Other tools don't look at the settings and just show the raw file without any noise reduction applied.

Great shots, as a former whitewater kayaker they make me smile. Which river was it on? And I agree with Arpe, don't worry too much about ISO in that situation. Up the ISO so you can freeze the action a bit better.

Boy this was ridiculously tough. Next time I'm going to choose an easier subject, something like 'Only White boxes'. I got some help from my lovely artistic wife who helped me judge the entries. But we didn't really agree on any of them at first but came to a bit of a conclusion but nothing was a complete agreement. In my opinion any of them could have won depending on who was judging. I won't put in too many comments since for some of them I have no idea why I chose them, they were that close..

Honorable Mentions:

Bramela: My wife Loved this one a lot. I wanted more green...

Arjay Bee: We both loved this one, how can a bug give you the stinkeye?

JimBow: Another one of my wife's favorites.

3rd Place: Ansbert: We both loved this one, made us think of Lord of the Rings. We were waiting for something to jump out at us...

2nd Place: Rense: We both loved this because of the wonderful shade of green. Although a similar picture was entered last week this one just fits the them and is a wonderful, eye catching shot.

And Number one, at least for us..
WLLM: Not a lot of green but it makes the picture happen. The bright green line and green on the fly were both eye catching and intriguing. This one caught my attention.

Again, there were so many that it was hard to choose so I got the Missus to help.

In the words of my friend Paula, I'll say it again about choosing the subject....

"That was Stupid" :):)
