If I had your arsenal and subject preferences, I wouldn't have switched to the D500. But my activity has changed from (almost) exclusively landscapes to moving critters, some of them quite small. I can hand-hold the D500 with Tamron 100-400 f/4.5-6.3 VC quite effectively and nail the focus most of time, but admittedly not in dim light. Still, this rig only cost $2,300. Here's a shot taken in good light.

I bought a D500 five months ago to replace my K3 and I'm wondering why I waited so long. But I've kept my K-1 for landscape.

Very true. I still have a little sports car (Triumph Spitfire) but that's a toy that sits in the garage most of the time. My wife and I both own and drive SUVs, because we often drive in snow and on rough gravel roads. I'm a volunteer photographer/docent for a land trust in the High Sierra, and I set up car pools for people who drive sedans to the meeting place.

My hiking rig is a K-1 with D-FA 28-105, but for planned landscape shoots I use the K-1 with the D-FA 15-30. For wildlife I use my Nikon D500 with Tamron 100-400. Given the vagaries of weather and wildlife behavior, I never know very far in advance when a particular equipment combo will be needed, so renting wouldn't work for me.

While I haven't used the primes mentioned in this thread, I have used the 20-35 and 12-24 on my K3. The 20-35 is great in good light, as is the 12-24. Backlight challenges both lenses, the 12-24 being a fringe monster.

I also use the 15-30 with my K1, carrying the combo on my chest in a harness for tight quarters and shooting into the sun. Backlit images from the 15-30 just glow, with very little flare or ghosting. This lens also produces great sunstars without a filter.

But would I buy the 15-30 to use with a K3? No. It's too heavy and costly for an effective 24mm field of view.

Agree 100% with Northcoastgreg. My DFA 15-30 leads me to seek out backlight. It produces sharp sunstars at f/16-22 with no noticeable diffraction or flare. Color is just gorgeous.

Zabriskie Point in Death Valley, California. Come to think of it, the dominance of yellows and browns in most parts of Death Valley encourages a monochrome rendition.

Not sure why, but images from the 16-85 seem very good for monochrome. Could it be the "grain" (pixel level)?

Thanks, Tim. Your results with this lens are also impressive.
Here's one that looked unsalvageable at first glance, but a lot of work in Lightroom fixed it. BTW, I keep a circular polarizer on at all times.

This is possibly the sharpest action shot I've ever gotten with the K3 and 55-300PLM. These guys were pretty close to the pontoon boat I was on, so 190mm (285 FFE) was about right.
