Bruce, yeah, boats sure do seem to have a place in the thread this week. At least it's not another "boring flower" thread!!! Seems more like the "B" thread this time... Boats, birds, bugs and bunnies...

And speaking of bugs.... this guy landed on my boat, not a macro, but as good as I could do with the DA 55-300.

Sorry for being MIA in this and last weeks POTW threads... but, until recently it has been very wickedly hot around here!!! Not the kind of stuff you want to get out in with your camera....

Bruce, thanks for hosting again!

Too many pics to comment on them all at once, but I do want to make a comment on one of them... Eccs!!! I see you finally captured a hummer very well!!! Great pic, I enjoyed it a lot and I know it brings pleasure to you! Well done!

So, I will post a few from this week...

The first is of my home town from the river in my boat... of a tow boat locking through the lock/dam.

A little closer up on the boat as it was leaving the locks...

A nice pleasure craft heading towards the locks to head to ports further north...

And finally, a pic of the moon through the clouds tonight....

Great work everyone! Keep posting!!!

Good thing I didn't guess... I had them all right in my views. #4 was the hardest, but I've done some construction work in the past and it really reminded me of some tile that we used in bathrooms around the tubs. #2 was a small challenge, but it looked like bark to me... :) #1 looked like the bricks that some people use for stepping on... #3 the kind of brick that you use to build a house. Nice textures!!!

Dave, thanks for the comments on everyones pics. Much appreciated! And, I really liked the first pic in your last post as well. I need to try some of the flowing water pics myself.

Scott. You are really getting good at getting those action pics just right! I loved the last two pics of the swings and misses. Man, he was so close!!! I am pretty new to this whole dslr deal, but have seen a lot of improvement in your pictures and timing! Please, don't take that as a critique... just saying that your more recent pictures are really great! Keep it up!

Andras, nice new lens! It looks like it's in great hands with you and that you are taking good advantage of it. I find it hard to believe that you can improve much on your boat shots though. That 16-45 has worked so well for you. And, I love that lens as well.

Scatron, nice pic of your daughter! I loved the tongue thing! I think we all do that when we don't think about it! I have the 1.7 version of that lens and really like it. Looking for another older prime with a longer focal length... but, I can wait. Great pics!

Kevin, that's quite the market! Good captures and thanks for sharing them!

I'm sorry... don't have enough time to go through the entire thread to say how great you all are, but I have enjoyed the pics!

Please keep posting your pics... and as always, this is a great weekly thread!

Well, it's been a busy week around here, not to mention just too darn hot and humid to be outside very comfortably... but, I did want to add to the "boring flower thread" , so I visited a small flower garden at the local hotel...

Been too busy to get much done this week, but the weather cleared off a bit this afternoon and I had to find something to shoot... the Mississippi River is always a good place to find something, so I found this tow boat locking through the dam, with some decent clouds in the background. Hope to find some time to comment on all of the great pics this week already....

All taken with the DA 55-300

As always, some great photos in this thread! I sure do enjoy seeing them, and what people are doing for fun!

That said, here are a couple more from the weekend's Chili Cookoff.

A couple of Clarksville locals taking part in the events!

Great hat and smile! Inside the boatclub, where the judging took place. And, what good is a chili cookoff without beverages?

Hey Dave... here's one to answer your kettle korn pic! I took this one over the weekend when our town holds it's annual "Chili Cookoff". The winners go to the World Championships later in the year....

These are more funny than good... Yesterday from the boatclub, we watched this group of men trying to get their boat on the trailer. I think they were either very inexperienced, or perhaps intoxicated! It took them well over 30 minutes to get it loaded. I liked the expression of the guy sitting in the back of the boat... It was like, "I'm with a bunch of idiots!".... and the guy in the water... not sure what he was thinking. The guy in the water at the front of the boat came to their aid, since he was waiting to load his boat as well, and couldn't until these guys finished.

Dang, this boat is heavy... and the water is cold!!!

Doesn't this look tasty? :p

Bigma, in the back yard... heavily cropped, but full sized pic of a robin and it's meal.

Too many shots to comment on them all, so I'll just go back the last 2 pages...

eccs - Nice flower shots, I especially liked #3 the best. Also liked your pic of the robin up on the shingles.

Scott - Congrats on getting that elusive point of impact with the bat and ball. The expressions on the faces are great too. Same goes with the soccer series, and I'm with Dave... #3 looks like it's gonna hurt! :o

Mark - That shot is priceless!! The B&W conversion is a great one too.

MacGirl - Welcome to the thread fellow Missourian! Nice captures at the concert and with your daughter and the riding lessons.

Georg - Nice pics of the baby birds... I'm wondering what they are???

Tom - I almost stopped with this fish heads... nice capture, but it doesn't look very appetizing to me! I did love the colors on the night shot of the fountains!

Dave - Spring has finally sprung in your neck of the woods! It's nice to see some great colors from our neighbors to the north!

Again, I am very impressed with everyone's abilities! Great posts and pictures again this week.

The sun finally came out again here in Missouri, so I took the opportunity to get some pics of local flowers. A lot of wind, so it was hard to get a good focus, but I still came up with a few that I liked.

And, a nice male Cardinal in my backyard yesterday. Sorry for cutting off his tail, but there were other distractions in the picture and he left the area before I could get a clean shot of his whole body... still thought this was pretty good.

Peter, Dave, and Andras, thanks for the comments on the sailboat pic. And I agree with everyone else here... lots of great shots again this week, and it's only Monday! Good Luck Peter on getting it up to 100 posts... I'll try to add a few along the way. :D

Peter, thanks for hosting again! Nice start to the week with a lot of great shots already. This one is not great, just unusual. I never see a sailboat on the Mississippi River. It is probably about 3/4ths of a mile away, with the DA 55-300 and handheld. If I'd known that I'd see this, I would have brought the Bigma and a tripod... instead, I settled for this.

Thanks everyone for the well wishes. And, I am feeling much better now! Woke up this morning feeling almost normal. And, normal enough to get my boat out for the first time this year and headed for the sandbar... camera in tow. So, I'll follow this with some pics from today.

Scott... nice macro's! And, it seems that you're always showing pics of your kids in some kind of sport or practice... just how many of them do you have? I hope you know, that's in jest... and I always enjoy seeing them.

Andras... more nice airplane pics. another favorite subject of mine.

Georg, nice goldeneye pics!

And, on that note, I will post a few from today.

First up... a fisheye of the lock and dam here in my hometown, on the Mississippi River.

Next up... up close on a small shell on the sandbar... or, beach if you prefer.

And lastly, a cute little girl on the sandbar buried in the sand.

I am sorry everyone for hosting this week and not posting much... been very much under the weather for most of this week. Today I can catch a breath, but still haven't felt like getting out to shoot anything. I do appreciate everyones pictures this week, you have been amazing.... I will post comments, hopefully tomorrow, when I feel a bit better. Nothing serious... just been a bad week. Again, thanks to everyone that has posted pics!! Bruce and Rense... I especially loved those sunset pics that you posted! But then, I'm a sucker for those... and, I apologize, I know there are a lot more posts here that I need to comment on. I will.

Thanks for understanding.
Rick

eccs, I took them with the Sigma 50-500 4-6.3 APO DG Ex, fully extended. ISO 800. With the K20D, and yes they are cropped a bit.

Thanks for the compliment!

Wow! I wasn't able to check in earlier today, due to work... can't believe how great everyone is doing in this thread!

Took these after I got home and had a few minutes to relax... actually caught him this time!

Peter, thanks for the airplane shots, I enjoyed them a lot.

xjjohnno - very nice bird pics! I really like the colors. Also, I learned something new today... never knew there was a red panda. Liked those shots too.

eccs - I liked the old truck with the tree growing through it. nice capture. The closeups on the spruce tree were very nice as well!

dayah, that is a great closeup. Could you tell me what it is though? :D

Dave, nice pics of the goslings! They are cute little guys, aren't they?

Andras, looks like your world got turned upside down! I like it.

Georg, nice colors on the flowers! Thanks for sharing...

Rainy day around here, so not much to pick from. Went down to the boatclub and caught some hummers at the feeders there. Shot through glass with the onboard flash.

Peter, love the bleeding hearts pic! I think that's the right name anyway... Very nice with the dandelions in the background. Without your saying it, nobody would know what produced that yellow background. And, I have to say, I love airplane pics... I am a retired US Air Force Master Sergeant, so planes have a place in my heart. Very well done on the photo. I also like the older ones as well.

Georg... all I can say is WOW!!! The swan is beautiful, but the backgrounds steal the scene. Such great cloud formations and colors. I would love to know your settings, and if you did much PP on them. Extremely well done shots!

Dave, your colors are popping! I have tried to catch the red winged blackbirds a few times without much luck. And, you got both the male and the female... I'm jealous! That tammy is working well for you!

Tom, great shots! I especially like the reflections in the first one, but they are all great. Very nice shot of the eaglets as well! I pretty much got into the DSLR game after the eagle season was over here, but we get a lot of them here in the winter. Can't wait to contribute some of those next winter... though, I can certainly wait for winter to return again!!! Thanks for sharing!

Peter, again... yeah, who would have thought to build a house into a lighthouse! Ingenious, and it's a great capture. And, with all of those dandelions, someone should be making some nice dandelion wine! Nice colors. And, you caught onto my favorite dog species ever.... I used to have a golden, and he was a great friend. Thanks again for sharing that pic. He certainly looks happy.

eccs... Great colors, but if I'm not mistaken that would be an iris, not a lilly. Either way, I like it!!! It looks like it is Spring time there with so many flowers in bloom! We went through that a few weeks ago, and it's nice to see it all happen. I have to say, that having returned to photography after a very long time being anything other than P&S, I notice so many more things. Pics like yours remind me of this. Thanks!
