Hello,
As you know I'm a big fan of the S(H) series of cameras. I have posted about their history in countless other posts. The SV (H3v) and the S1a (H1a) were the longest production of the series as they co-existed with the Spotmatic (launched in 1964) for a few years. They were both made until 1968. Not surprisingly, there were some rolling changes thru the years. But there was a major update that distinguish what we now call "Early" vs "Late" models.
The new King of the hill / Zeiss Planar-killer / we'll make the world's best or bust / everybody is doing 6 or 7 so we'll make 8 elements / Super Takumar 50 f1.4 lens was released in 1964 (along with the Spotmatic). This lens protruded a bit more into the camera and could interfere with earlier M42 cameras auto pin pushbar. This prompted a redesign of the pushbar in the current cameras in production: the SV (H3v) and the S1a (H1a). In order to differentiate these, the color on the "R" in the rewind knob was changed. Bu there are other subtle and no so subtle variations. Many of these changes were most likely rolling production changes so I wouldn't be surprised if you could find cameras with some combination of them. Not to mention that in their almost 60 years history, servicing could have happened with non-identical parts.
I just restored a late version and had a chance to compare with an earlier version restored a little while ago. Here are some of the external visually noticeable changes.
Can you spot the differences?
Some of those changes are:
I hope you like this. Let me know if I missed anything or if there is any error. I'm not an expert. Just an enthusiast.
Thanks,

The Scan Dual III should be plenty good, especially with B&W film.
I am only very slightly familiar with Vuescan, but it is good software and will provide everything you need. Learn to read the histogram, for scanning understanding both the input histogram and the output histogram is key to getting the most information off the film.
Keep shooting, and play around with Vuescan a bit.
You're off to a great start :) ---------- Post added 08-29-20 at 01:19 PM ---------- From September 2016 Untitled by Colton Allen, on Flickr

As I am pretty much unable to get out and shoot now, I spend a bit of time every morning looking through my archives for photos I never got around to sharing when they were new, or photos I didn't think much at the time.
It's actually become one of my favorite parts of the day. Over the past 12 years I amassed a huge collection of film scans (I made a point of scanning every frame on every roll I shot), and I enjoy randomly going through them and stumbling upon these somewhat forgotten gems.
I hope y'all don't mind that I keep posting these older photos... |

Haven't been doing much shooting lately, but dug the TLR out to run through its paces. Had some bad vignetting on much of this roll, which I attribute to using both the hood and a filter at the same time.
Picture 1 is taken with a blue filter, which I don't think I've ever done before, and picture 2 with the far more frequently used yellow. Untitled by Andrew, on Flickr Untitled by Andrew, on Flickr Meopta Flexaret Va. Meopta Belar 80mm f3.5. Kodak Tri-X. |

Hi Bob, thanks for your comment!
It was a great session that day, spending time in a dear friend's apt she lended us for that matter. The only source of light is natural light passing through these beautifuly high windows, typical of Haussmannian buildings in Paris.. Here's another one with Mei.
Different session, different vibe, different location.
