Is the OP missing some image files? I find it hard to believe I should paste spaces into the text file?

I've noticed that the vignetting is inconsistent among my lenses as well. I've always wondered whether the SR system de-centers the image or not.

I have once chased around a soft lens and it's not fun. I did notice most of the exposures were long for the FL you were using. Look how much sharper your 1/125 shots at 300mm were over the 1/40 at 300mm. The grass moves even if you didn't.
On a bright day take some shots at 1/1000 or more, which should be easily achieved wide open. Once you rule out any possibility of shake, you can examine the IQ. The lens shows symptoms of astigmatism, but it's hard to say till shake is totally ruled out.
In the end, it is you who has had the most experience with the lens. If it has been soft 100% of the time, then there's no point in fooling yourself. I had a 500mm that ghost even at 1/3000th speeds, many questioned my technique, ultimately, the lens was found to be out of collimation.
If you bought it at a b&m store, I would just exchange it.

Erik,
Even without NR, it seems there is less chroma noise in your sample. I now accept that the grain is normal as I'm seeing it in most samples as well, but perhaps my chroma is abundant.

Hi,
You sure can. I shoot JPEG as well. I was only experimenting with RAW in this thread because someone said it might help, and see how badly I screwed that up  In fact, the very first two pictures in this thread were straight from the camera, with essentially default settings.
Also, NR doesn't work on ISO-400. Only 800 and above.
Thanks.

Erik,
Thanks for the information. Actually, I shot all these in RAW+ and the 100% crops (of the sky at least) are from the JPEG files.
I could go to a store, but their cameras are bound to the stand by security cables. I was hoping another K2000 user could provide an example, in particular of the sky.
Lowell,
The settings are as it is out of the box.

Thanks for that. I believe the center of the image is correctly exposed, but I wanted to illustrate the noise in the darker extremities of the image.
Although I do notice that grishazzz has much less chroma noise in his images.

Thanks Mike. I'm complete raw to the whole RAW thing, I guess Picasa is doing some undisclosed processing.
You're right, I took that shot in RAW+ and I noticed that the JPEG is darker than Picasa made it out to be.
If you don't mind, could you post your development of that PEF? Or advise me what program you used?

All images I posted were 100% crops. Not so for grishazzz. I don't think Picasa even has a NR feature. It just claims to support .PEF and K2000. http://rapidshare.com/files/232730321/IMGP0740.PEF.html I've uploaded the .PEF here for anyone willing to take a peek. Perhaps it's newbie error.
I'd appreciate any help. This is my first and only Pentax camera, and could potentially leave a pretty bad taste in the mouth.

I just tried a shot in RAW. ISO-800 developed with Picasa.
Looks like I won the lotto for noisiest sensor.

Actually the noise isn't that noticeable in shots other than the sky. Especially if you have other details in the photo. I've noticed the grain and noise shows up the most on gray items.
Try pointing your cam at the sky at 100 and 400 on JPEG, perhaps it's the same.

So here I was test shooting a new Tamron 70-300 Di LD when I noticed the camera seems to have a grainy rendition of the sky. It is very minor at ISO-100, but stands out at ISO-400. I don't think ISO-400 should have this much grain.
Is this a weakness of the JPEG engine? Or just Pentax's signature noise?
Don't mind the boring test subject. They are 100% crops. 100 and 400 respectively.

Does this mean the Sigma APO is sharper than the Tamron wide open at the tele?

Thanks for all the feedback guys.
Just want to clarify that this is a 500mm F8 reflex. It's a dumb lens so the only variable is the shutter and focus.
Here's one of the better ones taken at 1/500. Weather here has been dismal.

Hi guys,
I'm fairly confident SR was turned off, as I knew I was going to be panning. I was shooting on a window ledge, but the window was open.
The softness I attribute to a combination of focus error, mirror lens, and atmospheric perturbance. That, I'm not worried about. The conditions weren't ideal and I accept that. I'm just confused by the motion blur. Interesting theory on the fast shutter/MLU, what I did notice, is this lens is so light that shutter release will shake the camera as well.
Focal length should be 500mm, I probably didn't enter FL information on the camera that time. More the reason I don't think SR was on.
One other thing, this lens is fixed at F/8. I'm not sure where the camera is pulling F/4 from, and I doubt I can input that.

I was test shooting a 500mm Tamron the otherday in poor conditions. Nevertheless, I cranked the shutter to 1/3000th and was surprised to see blur
I understand you can get any speed to blur if you tried, but I was shooting this normally. Panning slowly to follow the relatively slow commercial jet, hand propped on a window sill. Focus is OK, as evident in the 100% crop. Other images obtained at 1/180, 1/500 were sharper than this.
Any input?

While skimming through Steve Digicam's review page, I noticed this paragraph:
"......the light-weight K2000 is also very comfortable to carry and handle. Because of the small size, the image sensor has to be moved into position when capturing an image. This is similar to the way some dSLR's with Live View function. It does not appear to affect the performance but it does block your view through the viewfinder, which can hinder your ability to follow a moving subject while shooting in continuous modes."
Why or how is the sensor stowed? Does this guy even know what he's talking about? Last time I checked all SLRs blocked the viewfinder on release, and the K2000 certainly doesn't hold the mirror up during continuous modes.

That's a lot better than I thought. Many were complaining about how small it was. I just want a medium size bag to carry a K2000 and the kit 50-200 and 18-55, and perhaps a small 300mm reflex.
