Hi gang. My h'bird shots through many years show them at the feeders. This set shows them on a wire just 20ft from the feeder. They go to the feeder and back to the wire.I shot these from from my chair at the lap top with my Pentax 300mm prime lens. They are getting ready to head South.---charliezap.

When the lighting is just right it can make for interesting pics. Around 10AM this morning the feeder is in the sun and the background is in the shade with peeks of sun light coming through. The red is from a home about 100yds away.---charliezap..

Thanks guys. I use my Pentax 55-300 lens at around 120mm from 6-7 ft. distance. The 120mm gives me a better depth of field than using a higher mm setting.--charliezap.

I tried a different approach for taking my humming bird shots. Usually I take them at the front door feeder with flash most of the time but after a while they tend to be predictable with the same look from that vantage point. This morning I set up my Prime Pentax 300mm lens on the back deck from 10 ft. distance with the full sun on the feeder. I took some with my regular single station feeder and then switched to my Mason jar multi port feeder. With full sun I was able to shoot in the 1/1600 sec-1/4000 sec range and I was pleased with the results At that very close range the depth of field (focus) is very shallow. 2" either way makes a big difference on the clarity of the subject.-Charliezap.. Enjoy the shots.

Need some help identifying this type of dragonfly. It is common in the New England area and elsewhere. I use the flash but set the camera so that it doesn't look like a flash pic.--charliezap

Just another typical day around the hbird feeder with the Pentax 55-300 lens. It's mostly the male that feeds. I'm lucky to see the Mrs. during the day.--charliezap.

I set the camera settings at 1/25 sec-100 ISO at f/9 to get some light on the background. The flash from 6ft. away is what makes the shot. If you celebrate 4th of July have a great one for you and your family.--charliezap.

I'm often asked why I take many of my Ruby Throated Hummingbirds pics with a flash. My feeders most of the time are in the shade and the lighting is not that good. What I do is set the camera so that the back ground has some light to it as in the last photo. A typical setting is 1/125 sec f/9 at 200 ISO. The set up is only 6ft. from the feeders and with the flash at 1/8 power its duration is around 1/4000 sec which is enough to stop wing movement most of the time. My 55-300mm lens is set at around 120mm or so and that gives me a greater depth of field (good focus area). The low ISO (film speed) is conducive to a sharper image quality and it stays pretty good when cropped.. Feel free to ask if you have some questions.--charliezap

Hi all. it's been a while since I posted some shots so here are some from Saugus Ma. The ospreys here have returned and are building their nests for the Summer. All shots are with the Pentax 300mm lens that is my favorite for birding.--charliezap

Still trying after many years to refine my hummingbird technique. All shots were taken from about 6ft. distance through a glass door. I set the shutter speed at around 1 sec to bring out the background which was fairly dark around 7PM. The flash at 1/4 power painted the shots.---charliezap. I'm still learning. Usually when I take shots of the hummingbirds very late in the day with flash the h'birds come out good but the background is dark. My feeders are under the eaves on the East side of the house and around 8PM there is not much light. What I did yesterday was position the camera 4 ft. from the feeder. I took these shots at 1/10th.-1/5th sec so the background would still show some light. The flash being so close actually captured the shot of the h'bird. One of the last shots was taken at 8:20 PM. Another 70 years or so I'll have the technique nailed.---charliezap.

Hi gang. I'm having fun with the Pentax 300mm lens with my K5IIs taking shots of the bird life in my area. I'm having good results when they are around the nest but what can I tweak with the camera/lens setting to get them in focus when they are circling in the sky above without the camera "hunting" for focus.--charliezap.

Hi Tom--Thank you for the kind words. Maybe I should of asked the question without the eagle shot. My style of photography over the years has been vibrancy (post card looking shots). One line that made me laugh was . (may I suggest that you take the next six months and up your post processing game to "world class":D. From the replies that I got I may hold on to the K5IIs for a while longer. It has treated me very well over the years. Stay safe and well Tom..-charliezap.

Time to upgrade my Pentax K5IIs that I had since 2014 ($450 camera body) I'm not looking for the latest and greatest just one that is a couple of steps above what I have now. There are several in the $1000 range and below.Looking for suggestions from my fellow Pentaxians. The picture here is with the K5IIs with my newly acquired Pentax DA 300mm lens.--Thanks--charliezap.

I just got the Pentax 300mm DA lens 5 days ago. I love it. The bald eagle shots were taken at around 200ft and cropped. The moon shot is handheld. The lens is more than I expected.I'm thinking of selling my Sigma 50-500 lens that is in almost mint condition. Meanwhile the 300 is a crowd pleaser in my book.:)--charliezap.
