Things you may want to check is that the battery is fully charged, or put in a new set.
Check that your flash does not have EV turned down, which may low the exposure.
What metering do you have on? What mode you shooting in?
Probably some more info & samples would help determine the issue.

Beth,
Cute girl! I agree with Rondec.
The issue you are having may be the DOF is too shallow for your aperture / distance from the subject; failed focus and or motion blur.
But to me it seems like the focus didn't work right if you said you tried to recompose.
I don't know which lens you used, but the manual lens wouldn't allow you to recompose.
What was the lens / camera you used in the shot?
Try a lower aperture like 6.3+ with flash to get more in focus while maintaing a shutter speed that would prevent slight blurs from movement.

Nice, I just also got hold of one of these lens. I like it so far!
Used shortly on my trip to Griffith Observatory. It was a really large lens to carry uphill...but the carrying case helped. When mounted, you can remove the tripod collar if you want to use it for a walkaround. The fact that the lens does not rotate when you focus is nice, otherwise I couldn't imagine this lens extending further...
Very sharp with excellent IQ wide open.
In daylight, as well as indoors, I've not had any of the slow focus problems others have mentioned.
Like any other lens on a Pentax DSLR, it does hunt in certain low / weird light condition but compared to my other lens (Pentax and Sigma), it is comparably fast , and definitely better than Sigma DG APO 70-300mm.
Shot wide open at 95mm ISO400 with sun setting in the background. Small level and sharpness adjustments in Aperture with some skin toning.

Good job with the shots.
I particularly like the candid shot in #10 of the guy with long hair.
B&W does it or me and the expression in his eyes are spectacular.

Nice shot...
How big is that flower? I would be interested in a macro of closer crop on the flower itself by the thorny pedals; focusing on the tips of the pedals and fading in...

Was actually consider 16-45 or the sigma 18-50 2.8...
Would like it in low light situations, any input with the 16-45 with low light?

Ouch, K110d was like $236 or something here from what I saw yesterday. Pretty good deals.
I'm really tempted to get the K20d's off of eBay, but that would mean having to wait for cashback, hoping the seller sends me a good one, and waiting for 5-10 days for the order to go through.
When I think about it, the K20D is definitely nicer; but for the hassle and chances I think I will settle on the K10D. This will give me the extra cash for the battery grip or a nice prime lens. =P
As someone stated, I can't go wrong with either one. Just which is a better choice.
Thanks all for your input.

Thanks for the input.
I hear you on cropping. An extra nearly 1k pixels is pretty useful.
$175, that's money I can put towards a flash unit or DA40 ....

I just found a last K10D body at a local camera store on clearance for $375 + tax.
On eBay, I find the cheaper K20D bodies go for around $690 from beach, with a 14% cash back.
The calculated difference for me is $175...
Would it be worth the additional money for me to get th K20D???
I know it's got 14mp so the resolution advantage is quite obvious. I also hear about faster AF and a few minor fixes and advantages.
For someone who has own one or both, can you give me some input as to what benefits and drawbacks are of getting either one?
Thanks,

@ismaelg
On PC or even Mac I use Google's Picasa 3 for organization and quick PP tasks
It's a very nice tool with easy to use functions. It may not have all the functions of Lightroom, but it gets the job done.
You can export to JPG for editing in Pshop or other formats as well if you wanted to go into further post processing.

If you're looking to buy a new camera body and kit lens that's a pretty good choice IMHO.
Otherwise like others have mentioned, a K10D.
Personally being in that similar age group as your son, I can say I would not have the patience to work with film...
It's just a totally different mentality. Although I can't over generalize as he is his own individual, but I think our generation may share the same level of patience for working with older technology, or lack of patience I should say.
I have learned a lot about photography through the use of a DSLR. I can't say I'd have the patience to understand it if I had go use film. Although I do appreciate the film platform.
I think if I had to make an analogy, it would be like saying "you should teach him how to use a typewriter before using a computer." Why make things more difficult when you have more convenient technology that you essentially can gain the same results?
If he is artistic and becomes enthusiastic about photography he may end up experimenting with film.
My 2 cents.
