NYC is dead

Here's my two cents on the original post...

Having grown up in the heart of Chinatown and being a NYC area resident for 55 years, I will say that even though the collection is well put together, it does not truly capture the character that the Chinatown area is losing due to the gentrification and development that has taken place since 2001 when the former Mayor Bloomberg encouraged development throughout the city.

IMO. images of all the stores lining the sidewalks with their daily fresh vegetables, fresh fish and dry goods and images of basement level restaurants and businesses all accessible from street level cellar doors converted into steps for access into windowless restaurants and barbershops in addition to the informal Tai Chi groups of older residents working through their exercises in the early mornings in the neighborhood park would be more indicative of the character the neighborhood is in danger of losing.

In essence rents have risen and with it the area is now filled with more businesses catering to tourist and fewer to the locals. There are even apartments in the neighborhood that are rented out to millennials who are not Asian nor immigrants because the landlords are getting "key money" to rent a rent controlled apartment out to one person and not another. I knew someone that lived in a 2 room apartment in 1988. He & his brothers paid $30K in "key money" for the right to rent the apartment. I hate to think how corrupt the process is now that 30 years have past.

FTR, the pictures of the stores with multiple signs are actually single storefronts that have been converted into mini-mall setups with multiple vendors behind each storefront. The rents have gone up so much & that is how the vendors survive. This started happening in the neighborhood in the late 1990's. The neighborhood use to have five theaters catering to Asian movies for the locals. These died a quick death after VCR players became affordable. All the movie theaters either became min-malls or office building conversions. The areas in deep shadow are mostly areas under the Manhattan bridge which connects Manhattan & Brooklyn. These areas when I was growing up were not considered part of Chinatown but have become designated as part of Chinatown as the stores, businesses and residents have expanded.

Interesting fact for those that do not know, the movie Gangs of New York starring Leonardo DiCaprio is supposed to be about the area called the "Five Points" of which the NYC Chinatown is in the heart of.

Visiting an area and making a choice to have your children grow up in it are two different things. Just look at this whole college admissions scandal going on.... you can't tell me that most parent would subject their children to the "challenge" of getting ahead in the world because they as parents chose to try & make a part of the world a better place. I know I wouldn't.

I would do a search for K10D firmware update and back focusing as there are some people that have issues with back focusing after the upgrade. I don't recall which specific upgrade caused the back focusing but you may want to be prepared.

What is better...... Apple or PC ?

PC for me. First one was an XT model way back in the late 80's. Built PC's for the office from 1993 to 2001. Eventually went to consumer laptops then to business laptops and then to small business workstations. The entire office is now on small business based workstations & laptops. The difference being that the parts selections for business machines are more controlled & that drivers are more stable. Software upgrades tend to be smoother & trouble free without poorly written driver(s) updates screwing stuff up.

Why workstations?, we run AutoCad, Revit, 3DMax & other rendering software all on Windows 10 Professional 64bit. I've given up the IT duties a few years ago after we went past 20 machines. My latest project is to replace my (2) 2TB HDs in my laptop to (2) 4TB SSDs. Will happen this week if I have time otherwise will do so next week when I am at home recovering from some planned surgery.

New Pentax Cameras Make Us All Richer!

Quite frankly my opinion is that lots of the stuff going up on the marketplace is either not priced correctly or it is generally older stuff that only interest certain type of photographers. The stuff that is sought after is not on the marketplace for long as long as it is price below that of the big auction site.

Nice looking bag, but it's only 5" wide so would be hard to fit a camera insert in it. Especially if you're carrying a small laptop or Ipad.

I agree, especially since the guys fighting it out can throw money around and will not be hurt as much as if things don't pan out.

I'm sure it's been said before but a smaller company needs to pick it's battles and not fight every one. They also need to emphasize what they can do that their competitors cannot in order to increase visibility and market share.

You may want to try looking at the Marketplace for some deals though that would mean you won't be using the gift certificate.

42nd Street Photo is like those old pre-internet electronics/photography equipment stores from the 80’s that expect you to have done your homework and haggle for a price. Places like them use to dare you to walk in armed with pricing before they would negotiate.

Wasn't suggesting use of, merely mentioning that the OP or whoever had the lens before him may have & the force of the air would be enough to dislodge lubricant.

Lenses getting heavier?

Statistics are always presented in a manner by the presenter to maximize their arguments. When you consider that people that live their every day lives in Vietnam may get by on a salary of less than $100/month while $100 barely get's you through one night on the town in NYC, the statistics you mention don't mean anything.

They do give the shock value the author wanted though,....

Show a little class guys, just ask yourself whether you would be making jokes if this was a planeload of Americans from Texas or passengers from your native country instead of anonymous people 1.2 a world away before you make your next post.
