My father celebrating his 100th birthday. If I didn't already own the 77, I'd have bought it just for this occasion. |

We walked out the back to a couple of lookouts Tess discovered on her daily dog walks.
Follow the flagging tape.
Beech leaves...
Ferns...
Dogs have to play
Foggy view from the ridge..
Lichens
Headed back home. |

Anyone want to guess at what you are looking at? It isn't the sky.
The images have been cropped and sharpened, but no color corrections were applied.

I'm frugal with giving "likes". I use them for posts that I honestly do like, or find informative; not simply to give out a bunch of them for no reason.:) Probably why I have so few! LOL!

The FA*600 is a massive heavy lens, but was remarkably manageable and I thoroughly enjoyed the short time I had it between seller and shipping on to Johan. And I am very pleased it has gone on to a local South African Pentax enthusiast. It would have been a tragedy if this lens had gone off to distant shores.
So far, the combination is looking very good ito IQ. The FA speed on the K-3 must be impressive as I was already happy with it on my K-5.
Regarding some of the other observations from my short experimentation:
-Sharpness, I found it slightly soft wide open but still very very good. It is much sharper stopped down one stop, and brilliant in general. Considering all the difficulties with extreme focal length sharpness (motion blur, vibration, atmospheric aberration) the performance seemed about as good as it gets. It will be interesting when Johan and Philip (@vcollerp) get together and compare the FA*600/4 vs the DA-560/5.6 in similar light and atmosphere to see how the old compares to the new telescope design.
-CA, is not perfectly controlled, with a normal amount of green and magenta fringing in line with large aperture good primes from that era.
-Color, very pleasing and warm rich colors
-Bokeh, just brilliant. Smooth and pleasing to the eye imo.
-FA speed, good but not quite BIF material. But then throwing this lens around is going to be a challenge for other reasons (>8kg of kit minimum). Focus limiter was very handy to limit focus throw. AF/MF clutching reasonably effective with a quick push/pull action.
-Handling, the weight is something to behold. But it was manageable on a heavy duty monopod (I used 434B Manfrotto similar to newer 681B model). The weight could be a benefit in stabilizing the lens against unintended movement and vibration, but not sure if this real or opinion.
Johan mentioned the TC stacking I did, which worked very well on my DA*300 with an older MF 2x and the new AF DA-1.4x giving remarkable good results due to the high initial qualities of the lens. I think the same applied to the FA*600 although I didn't post the full size crop results for the double stack because of difficulties with shake. Here I was severely compromised in not having a heavy duty tripod and head. With close to 10kg mounted on a Manfrotto190XDB with a light duty 222 pistol grip being my limitation. Just not good enough. But wow, the magnification was fantastic with effective 1680mm on a 1.5 crop giving 2520mm FF equivalent. Perhaps I should have bumped T to 1/4000s..!

I certainly hope you are right! I was just thinking the other day of all the FF worshipers here that are being held back by the lack of a FF Pentax. These are most likely the "Elite" of the shooters of Pentax, and once we get a FF Pentax this site will no longer be filled with "inferior" work from such limited cameras as the K3 and those antique K5s, not to mention other "lowly" Pentax APS-C machines...... but will all of a sudden overflow with the most fantastic shots these "Elite" shooters will now be able to present us from their FF Pentax cameras.
Things here will change overnight! Guys we have been hearing from (but not seeing much of their photos, due to their not having the proper FF equipment) will be posting fantastic shots by the hundreds daily with their new FF Pentax cameras. Old cameras like the K3 and K5 will hardly show up again in the photo galleries, due to the shame of the shooters that can no longer compete with the "Elite" and their FF Pentax wonders.
As with all change, this brings the good and the bad.......We will have all those new "Elites" and their wonderful photos, but may never again hear from or see the shots from guys like old Normhead who will be stuck in the past and ashamed to post their inferior APS-C work ever again. Gone will be the days when we cruised the K3 and K5 photo threads and went Ooooh! and Ahhh! at what our lying eyes thought were fantastic shots, and instead we will go straight to the FF Pentax threads and never again wander away to view "lowly" work from the past.
Of course, this is of small concern to me....being a certified Toy Camera shooter. Since I "think" I see some great Toy Camera shots with my own lying eyes, I doubt that I am going to be able to recognize the greatness of all those "Elites" when they do show up.......maybe you will have the same problem? :D
Best Regards!:)

These lenses were both shown at Photokina a month or two ago. I'm glad you got a smile.
When all this is confirmed we'll all be smiling.

In my experience, you cannot go by what a rep' might say, as, quite often, they are the last to find out about new products.
