Flower shots are normally a bit ho-hum for me, but I like this very much. Sweet composition and DOF effect.

Theta drones?

To be honest I haven't paid much attention to the Theta, but was intrigued by its possibilities after the recent CP+ interview.

It seems to me that this technology is crying out for integration into a drone, perhaps in collaboration with an existing drone maker, especially if spatial sound can be integrated.

Is this a new idea, or (more likely, I suspect), a topic that has already been chewed over by the forums?

I like the idea, but doubt that I'll be able to go without my K-1 for an extended period of time, since I shoot events etc at work. So there's merit in the thought of buying a K-1 II and selling my K-1.

Anyhow, this is a nice problem to have. Kudos to Ricoh -- this is a great way to strengthen brand loyalty, and will probably attract new users to the brand.

Where's the weak link?

Thanks for your advice, everyone. I won't share any photos, since the subjects have a reasonable expectation of privacy.

Yes, I use the Lightsphere pointing upwards -- I find it's really conducive to flattering results. But my flash shooting is not as consistent or as predictable as I'd like. On the whole, I err towards over-exposure -- but not consistently. Since the flash is to all intents and purposes undocumented, it's not clear to me how to control its output, so I leave it in P-TTL and try to find suitable settings on the camera.

In the process of shooting people and keeping them engaged, I tend to find that good old Program mode is as reliable a choice as any. That has the advantage of allowing me to maintain that connection with the subjects, but it seems like a slightly "brain dead" approach. It's not an approach that encourages me to grow as a photographer.

Anyhow, it's pretty clear from your responses that I'm the weak link here (which doesn't surprise me), so I'm looking forward to exploring Nigel's guide. Thanks again folks!

Where's the weak link?

I've been shooting a lot of portraits at work lately, and my new K-1 is working like a dream with the 28-105 mounted. But I'm starting to feel that my flash (Sigma EF 530 DG ST) is the weak link. But I'll be the first to admit that I don't really know how to use it. Sigma's manual is to all intents and purposes non-existent.

To clarify, my portraits are usually just individual or group portraits, typically shot indoors, under typical office fluorescent lighting. I just put the flash in P-TTL mode and usually have a lightsphere mounted on top as well. My clients (colleagues) expect me to rattle off a few shots in a couple of minutes, and get good results. And I *have* been able to deliver good results, but too often that's because the impressive K-1 DNGs have allowed me to rescue poorly exposed shots. So I'd like to get more consistent results.

Thus: if I'm the weak link, should I just read through Nigel McGregor's guide? (I will anyway, just downloaded it). Or is there some other guide more specific to the flash that will help me?

Or, if the flash is the weak link here, what's the consensus on a good quality flash to get? Advice about triggers would also be welcome, because I'll sometimes hire professional lights.

Thanks!

Great explanation, thanks!

Pentax traditionally ekes out better dynamic range from its sensors than just about anyone else, which is one of the things I really value about the brand. So I'll trade a bit of burst speed for dynamic range, for sure.

I'm not an engineer but ...

It seems to me that it would be a relatively trivial task to release a Pro version of the K-1 that's exactly the same as the current model, but includes deeper buffers for faster burst shooting. This will come in at a higher price point naturally, but it would attract/retain those shooters that really want that feature and are willing to pay for it.

A few years ago I found a Japanese guy on flickr who was using a Leica to shoot utterly humdrum pictures of his wife. It was a long time before he even starting playing with DoF or anything. But each of his photos got plenty of likes, because Leica.

There must come a point where a single frame from a video stream is a perfectly decent still image, which will revolutionise portraiture and action photography.

Maybe we're there already? Naturally a lot hangs on what "perfectly decent" means for you.

This feels like a dumb question, but what the hell. On the face of it, updating the FA limiteds with new coatings and motors would seem like an obvious move for Pentax. But if it was as simple as that they probably would have had them ready with the launch of the K-1. Is anyone able to enlighten me as to what's wrong with this idea?

The quote that started this thread off read:

This doesn't say that these new customers are former Canikon shooters, contrary to the title of the thread. These new customers might never have bought an SLR before. We just don't know, in the absence of more details.

My guess? There are probably a significant number of people out there that really want a full frame SLR, but haven't been able to stomach the cost of FF Canikon offerings. Along comes the Pentax K-1, in a blaze of positive reviews and an attractive sticker price. At last the price seems bearable, so the potential buyer flashes the plastic and takes delivery of a great new camera.

People seem to be really happy with their K-1s, so that's good news for them, and a win for Pentax. This satisfaction is likely to turn into repeat business from the same people, and recommendations to their friends. It bodes well for the long term growth of the brand.

I reckon this is on the money. I'm sure that Sony doesn't give a damn if Pentax produces bodies that are bit nicer than theirs six months after they've released a sensor. Samsung, on the other hand, is a genuine rival from their point of view.

You jest, but I'd be interested in this, assuming that the price + performance are reasonable.

Come to think of it, a new designer mirrorless body every two or three years would be a nice sales gimmick -- much more interesting than multicoloured versions of standard SLRs.

Leaks are normally a bad thing, since they deter buyers from making a purchase right now. But perhaps Ricoh is gambling that it's better to deter a few present-day Pentaxians from upgrades right now rather than switching to different systems. In my case, I'm ridiculously loyal, but the Sony A7 II has given me pause.

An Open Letter to Sony, Ricoh, Hasselblad and Phase One

I was reading about the new Phase One system, when I started wondering if the world is ready for a MF version of the Ricoh GR. That is, a "compact" body with a fixed lens and an MF sensor. Such a product would of course lack the flexibility of an MF body with interchangeable lenses, but it should be vastly smaller and cheaper.

How about it, Ricoh? Bringing Pentax tech into a Ricoh-style package would be a unique product that would attract a lot of attention in the marketplace, and whet the appetites of pros and well-heeled enthusiasts for more complete MF systems.

If memory serves, we've been told that this is the start of a new product line. If so, perhaps this was just cobbled together to fill in the line up, and serious work is happening behind the scenes to address these missing key aspects. I think the product positioning is smart: luring Instagram obsessives into an upgrade.

Cheers Nicolas. I was thinking in terms of a quality zoom that would mainly be used for shooting people indoors, singly or in groups. My thinking was that I could give up the speed of the Tamron if the Pentax has comparable IQ and a measure of pixie dust. But if, as you say, the Pentax has lower optical quality, I'm back to the Tamron.

For cities etc I'd reach for either my DA15 or Sigma 10-20.

With these kinds of distinctions in mind, it's not impossible that IBIS and ILIS could be designed to work together in a suitably refined system. This is not to dispute the point that having two competing systems attempting the primary task of image stabilisation is never likely to be a worthwhile solution.

I need a short to mid-range zoom, and if the performance of this is comparable to the 55-300, I'm sold. Otherwise I'll go for the ageing but still respectable Tamron 28-75.

Pentax K-S1!

This camera is meant to attract cell phone shooters, so let's talk about what would attract cell phone shooters to upgrade, and what wouldn't. My contention is that a dedicated SLR should do everything a cell phone camera does, and better. But that's not always the case, is it?

When I was travelling a few months ago, there were a few occasions where I shot a panorama with my K30, but then shot another with my iPhone as a backup. Until Pentax cameras have a panorama function, they'll always seem a little bit hobbled compared to a humble cell phone, at least in this respect.

Moreover, I'm no fan of Instagram, but many many others are. More powerful filters with the ability to customise and save them would also add to the user experience.

Pentax 645Z Officially Announced

You could say that, because Apple has revolutionised consumer electronics in other areas, so Japanese execs think that the optics market will go the same way. The interview with a Ricoh exec that was posted here a few months ago said as much.

Even though you (and I) may be fairly tolerant of a certain amount of bulk and weight if the quality is there, we're probably not typical of the market.

It doesn't cost them anything to announce a K-mount version early, and may keep some people hanging on instead of buying something else (such as the 20-40).
