Ricoh registered new BATTERY CHARGER
Posted By stevebrot

To give a more accurate answer, many countries maintain registries of electrical and electronic goods that meet standards, sort of like UL listing in the U.S., only mandated by law. Certain rumor makers monitor the status of registries in multiple countries (Korea is very popular) looking for registration of technologies (e.g. wifi) or accessories (e.g. chargers) as a clue to the release of new models. Often enough, this sort of thing is a false flag in that a new registration may simply be an improved version of the product to meet a standards change. A good example might be the change of battery model names are few year ago.

Right. As this is neither news nor rumour, I think it's time to kill the thread. The OP is welcome to start a new thread if more information comes to light.

This is a great idea! Perhaps Ricoh can/will expand on the API in the future. Looking at the current docs, the functionality is a bit limited. But, perhaps some hidden functionality will be discovered over time.

As I said before, in WIFI (android) code there are references to GRII and WG-M2 and K-S2, not only metioned K1/K1II, KP and K70, so maybe someone will try to check it and it will work?

I haven't checked USB code, because my K50 is not supported for sure, but who knows. Maybe just mentioned by Ricoh camreas are officially supported, and other should work too, but just are not supported?

K-1mkII overpowered NR. Firmware update?

Worth noting that I have done this at home with my K-1ii and seen the same thing. It's certainly subtle, but its obvious enough that I got a room full of non-photographers (family members) to pick out which was which nearly 100% of the time from 100% crops. All of that said, I love my new camera and am pretty sure at this point I'm keeping it. I figure I can expose for iso1600 and then shoot at iso400 if I am REALLY concerned about the extra detail and any improvement in AF is very welcome :-)

I really hope Pentax enables turning off the NR functionality at least at iso 1600 and below.

K-1mkII overpowered NR. Firmware update?

I am in the same boat... love my K-1, but would like the promised better AF, and the possibility of getting more FW updates in the future as the K-1 falls off the update list.

As to an update to specifically choose where NR kicks in and out of RAW, that would be most helpful to allay a lot of peoples angst.

BUT... I'd like to mention something else which I feel is a little bit of a 900lb silent gorilla in the room:

When I first got my K-1, coming from a K-5 classic, I was surprised a little by the amount of noise at base iso and 100% viewing compared to the K-5, and I find myself applying NR in post to RAW in ACR to files as early as iso600 or so. This takes time, and effort... if the built in NR just mildly puts back what I was used to with the K-5 as to noise, and doesn't smear it any worse than I would do with ACR in PP, then is there really a problem??? I realize there is the whole viewing size / number of pixels equation, I get that, don't please start with the math. I totally get that too.

Why worry about noise at 100%? Who cares what files look like at 100% ? Well what about 80% or 60% which is more likely to be a common crop? Well, if you want to get a sharp shot with a steady hold on your lens wide open for that creamy bokeh without a lot of noise ruining the shot on a shorter brighter lens, and / or your lens minimum focus distance doesn't let you fill the screen with your subject, or you don't have time to change to your long lens, or you didn't bring your long lens, you didn't bring your macro, or your subject is moving and you are trying to keep in inside the AF points border, or... or... or... lets suffice it to say there are a whole lot of reasons you might be doing heavy cropping.

Finally... my last thought that nags at me... The percentage of missed focus pics is going to ruin a whole lot more shots and be a whole lot more noticeable than any baked in mild NR applied!!!!

I guess I am trying to talk myself back into doing the upgrade, and that is my current rational. Still kinda on the fence, but I hate the idea of being left out in the cold on future FW updates... plus, part of me wonders if there will be even more AF tweaks in future FW updates, made possible by the new board, that my old K-1 won't be able to use.

Of course it can be adjusted in a future update. The fact that it is turned-off at low ISO implies it can be turned off.

Do you really think that it's really important ? Absolutely useless discussion. The shop uses picture just for advertising, for reference only.
Who cares about GR or GRII at the photo?

The main thing in my post is 20% discount for GRII. Not the picture.
GR is discontinued in 2015 year and no selling of GR for the last 2.5 years. I've put the link at the site of shop for you.

Yes, it should have WR, especially dust seal .:)
But after buying K1, I think that a thin folding screen would be very good in low position and for street photography.
And i do not say no to a KP sensor for 35 and 50mm crop.

All good to hear - I haven't looked at the rumour section here in quite some time.

Honestly, I do wonder what is coming. I'd be happy with a 24MP update using the existing form factor and lens for better landscape cropping.

I really have gotten a lot of wonderful pictures and memories out of my GR classic. I'll start saving my pennies.

Both these cameras have sensors that are one ninth the size of the GR sensor. So there are room for SR with much smaller sensors.

It's like asking Ricoh to design a medium format camera with SR the size of Pentax KP. It's already amazing that Hasselblad managed to make a small camera like this without sensor stabilization.

Short CP+ K-1 II Impressions

I visited CP+ today and had a touch and try with the new K-1 II with an english speaking staff.
After that I went to their small special booth where they show case the new high iso performance of the k-1 II with taking a picture simultaneously on the old and the new K-1 model and let you compare the results directly on the screen.

All the K-1 II new features are provided by the new accelerator unit, as we know, which only helps in faster processing the pictures and therefore allow new software tweaks / algorythms (like better tracking AF-C / better high ISO performance due to noise processing? [read below] and the new pixel shift mode).
The main processor or other parts have not changed though. Therefore there is no benefit to other processor intensive tasks like faster UI (which I hoped for :( ).
Also there is no benefit for video capturing because it does not use that unit (I specifically asked). Also they do not fokus on video and they had no information on a firmware update providing mechanical SR for video. They clearly stated that Pentax focuses not on video but picture taking.

The new pixelshift mode is taking pictures in interval mode with mechanical shutter and takes therefore longer than the real pixel shift. Which uses electronical shutter and is taking pictures faster in sequence (they confirmed this also).

The high ISO shots were compared at ISO 25.600.
The K-1 II had better colors with less false colors and more contrast.
But the edges were more smeared! It looked as if there is some mild noise reduction applied even if noise reduction is turned off.
One could easily see that the original K-1 picture had more defined edges and is less smeared. Like they had the number „4“ on a wine bottle and the inner space of the „4“ was smeared into yellowisch on the K-1 II whereas in the K-1 picture this was not the case.

But keep in mind that really was pixel peeping in max zoom, so I am sure nobody expects perfectly useable images at ISO 25.600 in 1:1 view. So due to better colors and higher contrast the overall picture will probably look better than on the original K-1.
Still I do not like that I have to give up details compared to the original K-1 picture. Especiallly if I am not able to turn these “improvements” of if I prefer more details instead.

Anyhow I can just advice anybody to think the hardware upgrade through and wait for reviews to make an informed decision.

Actually I wanted to update the hardware in my K-1 because I totally like what pentax is doing there. Especially from the environmental point of view.
But now I am not so sure if there is really a 500€ improvement in the K-1 II.
I will definitely wait for reviews until I decide.

Also please take these things with a grain of salt. Even if I wrote “they” I spoke only to one staff member so there might be some misinterpretations /-informations going on xD.

Here is a photo I took of the high ISO comparison shown on a big TV screen at the booth. You could even see the slight smearing there, take a look at the letters:

https://www.dropbox.com/s/r2ynvdykydzb5ro/IMGP6201.JPG?dl=1

I asked about the 50mm star lens release, they were only allowed to state spring but hinted on cherryblossom season (end of march / april).
They also had a flyer about a completly reworked ImageSync app in spring (fingers crossed).

I also asked Sigma about K-Mount lenses -> unfortunately there are no plans to release new lenses in K-Mount. Even if the person I asked understand our needs as she has a friend who also uses pentax cameras and is bugging here about this xD.
Same information on Zeiss lenses.

If interested I could upload some images from the exhibiton next week when I am back at at my laptop.
