Bruce-there are many settings in your preset that I use when processing my landscapes, tho I mask a lot less on sharpening.
I have never used presets but your mention it I may give it a go- easy to do and would certainly help in making initial scan for the better shots
Thanks/Bill

Thanks Bruce- curious, are you shooting RAW and if so, what sort of adjustments are included in your preset(s)?

I'm interested to get input from folks who post process in Lightroom, specifically regarding WHAT and HOW you choose/use 'camera profiles'.
I shoot RAW w/K-1 camera last 2 years and PP in LR ver.6 and have profiles from Huelight loaded; I've not spent much time with them, I tend to set the 'neutral' profile and then begin my post processing work. But recently I took a bit closer look at the effects generated by the various profiles and there is more of a 'difference' in the results than I'd earlier realized.
Anyhow, noting overly specific question wise but curious to get input from people who have paid more attention to camera profiles than I have.....which is probably most people, ugh!
Thanks/Bill

Pentax DA 60-250mm F4ED[IF] SDM Asking Price
300.00 USD Item Location
OCEANSIDE (United States) Item Description NOTE: Auto-focus non-operational
I am 2nd owner, purchased this lens from original owner Jan 2013; lens was < 2 months old at that time. Fully functional aside from failed SDM auto-focus motor; manual focus works perfectly and lens is in excellent mechanical/optical condition otherwise - it has seen very modest used during my ownership. I modified the internal baffle to enable this lens to be used on my K-1 which I've been shooting with the past 1 1/2 years.... which is about when the SDM motor in this lens failed, darn!
This is an outstanding lens, if you're willing to invest U.S. $300 or so in the SDM replacement you'll have a fully functional product.
Any questions, please post on the forum or send Private Message - thanks for looking. Are you the original owner of the item being sold?

Perhaps we heard less talk re:60-250 motor issue as the population of those shorter lenses was likely large in comparison to this longer/more costly lens? Then again I could be all wet and just got a lemon...original motor went kaput after 1 year; replacement lasted not all that much longer.

May we’ll be there is an internal issue beyond the motor. However I recall reading several posts a number of years ago about motor failures in both this and the 50-135 model lens- I had one of those lenses also and SDM failed after a few years- that lens I converted to screw drive and never any further issues.

New motor is less of an expense than replacing the lens; but having had the motor replaced once already I’m a bit gun shy of going that route again. I’ll find a functional used lens (Tamron, etc) that is a true FF design for use with my K-1.
I’ll put the 60-250 up for sale at fair market price; AF motor aside, lens is pristine both mechanically and optically. Let next owner deal with repair.
Thanks/Bill

Mike, thanks again. I looked at Tamron's website and see the model variations; the "A001" is only model that has the K-mount as you indicated. I am not averse to buying used, done it before w/good luck- however, I think my chances of finding a seller who is local to me so that I can see the lens before buying is slim, this is Pentax stuff not Nikon or Canon. I'm leaning strongly to this lens, price is decent and I can sell my 60-250mm by pricing it accordingly and of course disclose the AF motor issue. Lens is pristine but after having once had the motor replaced then that one die, well, I'm just reluctant to put another $300 or so into the lens - if it were truly a FF design I might well do so.

Mike....I'm tending to agree with you on this Tamron lens for my needs. I'm not that up on lenses but if I read correctly this 70-200 has two versions, the original and a redesigned one, am I correct? I would presume the newer/current model is a 'better' lens, but guess I need to read-up a bit more to know. I have owned Tarmon in the past, believe it was one of their 16-45 APS-C lenses - I used it on K5/K3 and it had great IQ, so I'm not hesitant on the brand.
What to do with my old 60-250 Pentax lens?.....broken SDM. I guess I can get something for it, darn it's a nice lens- disappointing the darn motor went kaput, twice!
Thanks/Bill

Thanks Ron....this may sound a bit of a dumb question, but why to you see the screw drive as a drawback? As I recall screw drive is bit louder than SDM, anything else?

Folks,
I shoot a K-1 and have been using a 60-250mm for longer reach, sometimes action subjects. The second SDM motor has conked out so I have no autofocus, that aside the lens function well for my needs - the baffle has been removed - I'm really thinking I'm not interested in spending money (again) to have the motor replaced - maybe time for a new FF long zoom.
I know my options are pretty limited; I'm not really keen on spending the BIG bucks for a Pentax brand lens, but maybe. Most of my shooting is done with my 24-70 lens, so the long lens will see limited use in comparison. Give me your input/thoughts on this.
Thanks/Bill

Here are a three afternoon pic's from a short visit to Hellhole canyon in the the SoCal desert yesterday afternoon - wildflowers are out but not overly impressive showing compared to 2 years ago.

Thanks. Look at the 2nd pic in the original post....right in the middle of that frame you can see the part that was zoomed in as a closeup shot in the tighter shot - look for the trees that match and the mountain peaks. You can then see that if I had taken that original/first shot w/zoom lens or just tightly cropped the photo there would be NO water in the scene at all.
Farmers pond is a large but relatively shallow 'pond' when it's got water - in summer it's totally dry. The two screen snips from Google Maps will give you idea where the place is located, right near N. side of Bishop off Hwy 6.

Thanks for your input- I think I can tweak the framing of the tree a bit too.
B/W is kind of tricky for me, I don’t shoot specifically for b/w and the few images I migh garner that have conversion potential are few in number- so I don’t have much experience in conversion.

Thank you. The place where that was shot is called 'Farmers Pond' by the locals. This pic was taken in same location, but a much tighter shot, it was taken in March a couple of years ago - compare the two, look at the three trees- they are in both shots;notice how much water is in that area after winter is about over. That pano is good but the mud/low water level is not so pretty....I need more water, or maybe a different camera location for the shot.

Understood, but still....the aspect ratio of the viewfinder which we look through has an effect on our initial composition, camera position, etc. Be ideal to be able to work with something other than 3:2 ratio in the field.

Well now...this is a pretty old thread but since I've been wrestling with my 'aspect ratio anxiety' of late it's of interest.
My 'issue' is I tend toward composing the image in the viewfinder to what I feel is the 'strongest' composition; one can't always do that but often I think (I'm talking landscape pics mainly). So then my 'problem' comes to post-processing and printing: here I sit at my computer and if my field capture is as I (often) expect then I don't need to do any, or maybe VERY LITTLE cropping - fine, but then I want to print and frame, mount, etc. that image that is likely right at 3:2 aspect ratio. There are more frames and precut mats available in 'digital' sizes but still not nearly the abundance of the 8x10, 11x14, etc. stuff. How to deal with this? Go to borderless, such as canvas or gatorboard mounting?
What are your thoughts on my so-called 'dilemma'?
Thanks/Bill

Thanks. That last (unprocessed) image was the beginning of a pano shot; here's what the pano came out looking like, plus another shot that was taken 30 minutes before sunrise. I just need 'farmers pond' to get filled up with a bit more water or move my camera position so I capture the scene w/o the mud shoreline in foreground.

Thank you....I just need more rain/snow to fall to fill up 'farmers pond' a bit more so I have just water and no mud in the foreground ;)

Thanks, that last pic was simply to tell to the previous poster where the camera position was when I took the first photo - it was not intended to be processed or used.
I do have the NIK collection, might give it a go on the original image, but I find at times that software can be pretty 'heavy handed' with it's effects.

Thanks. I think your suggestion on composition - cropping the water area below the tree might makes sense, I'll give that a go and see how it looks. Aside from that, the location of the adjacent tree does not allow for backing camera away (wider focal length) to 'isolate' this one tree and all it's branches against the background - attached is a pic showing the scene but from another angle (pic is direct from camera so it's 'dull') - camera position for the image I converted to b/w is from on the small grassy mound just to the left of the tree (tree I shot is on left in this image). The sun was rising almost directly behind me, it was 12 mins. after sunrise, I was done shooting and on my way to the car when I turned to see the tree. I think the 'halo' you see is likely the light/color in the distant sky and/or maybe a combination of that along with taking a large raw file and compression it to upload here - raw file it looks tad bit different in that respect.
I'm going to play with the b/w conversion - I am like many, my first inclination on b/w is to move towards heavier contrast for 'snap', etc. That might be effective, I'm going to play with it and continue also along the 'soft look' too.
Thanks/Bill

Give me your input/ideas on what I can to regards a b/w conversion on this one, I think it's got potential.
The conversion shown was done in LR6 and I sort of went for a soft look...tad bit negative clarity.
This image is from K-1, you're looking at basically the field capture- hardly anything was cropped in post (it was shot in raw) so there are plenty of pixels to work with - such as maybe a heavy crop to an 'abstract' or ???
Thanks / Bill

Thanks....we'll have to see how it prints- peeping the raw file my focus is slightly off, it's not tack sharp so might not be able to get away w/printing very large - oh well, get em' next time!
