Can support the claim about DIY repair. Bought a K30 already showing the faut for about 60GBP. Thanks to photogem's excellent rundown of what to do, fitted it with the solenoid off my donor istDS, which cost me about 20GBP some time back as source of spare bits for my ist. Been using the K30 very happily for a couple of years now, so it doesn't owe this 77-year-old much if it dies next week.
Mind you, spending time "as a lad" wielding a soldering iron probably helped.

Thanks for the enlightenment and the slapped wrist for daring not to know of all the relevant protocols.

Out of interest, what is the danger?

Thanks for the warning. It worked well on the MX and Program A that I used for years, so maybe someone out there will want it.

If the istDS is still able to accept batteries (My spares one was bought specifically to get a battery door for the functioning ist) then the release button should work. It was a happy chance that when I bought a dodgy K30 with the solenoid failure, there was still a good white solenoid in the donor camera.
It's not a difficult swap if you have a fine soldering iron and work methodically through the instructions on the sticky.

Slight change of topic, but still in the same general area. Checking through lenses from my days with an MX, found what I recall as being a very useful Vivitar 28-200 zoom, which could possibly be useable on the K30. But it won't fit. The reason is that the ?shield? by the aperture activating lever occupies a much greater proportion of the circumference than do the similar part on all my other K-mount lenses. Anyone know why this is, or what function it serves?
Couple of pictures of the mount end of this lens and a "normal" one for comparison.

Actually pad 50 GBPounds for it, so not QUITE such a bargain. I've got several K series lenses that are hung over from my MX days, so really need to get used to using those before lashing out on more lenses.:)

Thanks for the suggestion. Would love to take the advice, but TEN times the cost of the K30 is a bit steep on a pension!

Followed instructions to the (printed!) letter on a K30 bought off Ebay with the known fault present. Happened to have a "spares" *ist DSL bought to repair my old *ist and it had the white solenoid. It's all a bit tiny for 76 year old eyes to work on, but years of hobby electronics from younger days helped, everything went smoothly and after a bit of messing round, I now have what seems to be a fully functional K30. Only thing now is that it makes me very dissatisfied with the "kit" lens that came with the S/H *ist and so am wondering what is the best price/quality combination as a replacement.
Grateful thanks to the author for an excellent guide to what should really be a totally unnecessary repair.

Just rejoining the Pentax world after a break of a few years. Based in North East Scotland, now retired and was a regular Pentax user from about 1980 to 2002. Then lapsed into digital mode with Fuji, but kept much of my Pentax film kit, mostly for sentimental reasons. Been looking out for a cheapish Pentax digital body to be able to use some of that old Pentax kit, and just got a rather battered istDS. Beginning to get the hang of it, using an old K series f2.8 Soligor 200mm to record our resident red squirrel.
Will probably need some advice, and spare bits for the ist as it gets more familiar.
