The 15mm Limited controls my mind - club

This lens has very quickly become one of my favorites, and has displaced the 21 as the lens that is on my camera by default. One thing that's great about this lens that doesn't get much mention the lack of purple fringing. The only other lenses I have that do better in this area are a couple of voigtlander apochromatics, which seems pretty amazing for such a little wide angle lens.

Here's a few from my first trip with the lens (I bought it for this trip).

Interval shooting woes...

I don't think it cancels the interval shooting in this case, it just doesn't take the picture and decrements "number of pictures to take" counter. It can still continue to take pictures, but probably not many if it is set for a one second interval and 30 second exposures.

Yeah, this behavior seems wrong, and could probably be easily fixed by not decrementing the "number of pictures to take counter" when a picture isn't taken. If the user specifies 10 pictures, the camera should take 10 pictures. If the interface had you set the interval and total duration of the timelapse, than I think the current behavior would make sense.

btw, I tend to exit interval shooting mode by turning the camera off. Seems like a bad thing to do, but I can't hit the series of 4 buttons to exit in the 1 second between exposures.

K-5 battery life

Taking 30 second exposures every 32 seconds with the built-in intervalometer, shooting RAW, my K-5 usually goes about 4 to 4.5 hours before the battery runs out. I'm usually shooting near or below freezing so it should be better with warmer weather.

I also seem to get much better battery life using an external intervalometer so you might give that a try. I haven't done any controlled tests and I can't imagine why it would make such significant difference, but it does seem help a lot.

Sigma, Pentax or Samyang?

I have all three, but haven't used the samyang much since I've only had it a few weeks.

Pentax 10-17 : I don't use this much any more, and now that I have the rokinon 8mm, I should probably sell it. It has quite bit of CA, and it isn't very sharp. It's a fun lens to use, but image quality isn't very satisfying.

Sigma 8-16 : It's pretty big and heavy. The image quality is pretty good, CA isn't bad (actually pretty good for a lens this wide) and the center is sharp. I wish the corners were sharper though. I'd go with this lens for architectural shots (because it's rectilinear), but with landscapes it doesn't quite have the look I was hoping for.

Samyang 8mm : Just got this lens so I haven't used it too much. I like the projection though, and I'm looking forward to taking it out backpacking. It doesn't distort as much as the Pentax, and the images don't feel as distant than the Sigma at 8mm.

I'm always on the lookout for cases to store / carry my limited lenses and
was happy to find the 8" OP/Tech Accessory Pack is an almost perfect fit.
Just thought I'd share in case anyone is looking for something similar.

Now if I could just find a good extra small lens case that I can attach to my belt. . .

Pentax 21/3.2 vs Tamron 17-50/2.8 Comparison

I wrote a small java applet for merging image crops together. I hope some of you will find it useful and create a few images of lenses I don't have. The tools are available at weblightbox. The pixel stacker (also known as measurebator) was used to generate the images below.

Here's a brick wall test between the Pentax 21mm f/3.2 Limited and the Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8.

The Pentax 21mm f/3.2 Limited is one of my favorite and most used lenses. The size and focal length make it great for backpacking and travel. I haven't used the Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 very much, but it seems like a good option for weddings and similar situations.
