HDR in Lightroom 5.3

Oh one more thing to keep in mind is that HDR files by themselves do not look very stunning. It is the tone mapping that makes them look good. With the K-3, you can play with the curves and such settings to get a very similar effect even with regular raw files.

K-3- The Reviews, So Far
Posted By rbefly

Hello All,
On another thread- 'What Digitial Camera Review' started by Ivor K Ecks, I posted a list of the existing independent reviews of the K-3 that have been mentioned by various Forum members so far.
But I didn't add the links to the respective threads or direct links to the reviews. I didn't have all the links handy, simply because I only had been keeping a paper list as they appeared.
This thread is an attempt to correct that oversight. I'm not trying to undermine the original threads, they're still here for anyone to see and contribute to.
Here, I'll start posting the review name, the direct link and the user name of the original poster/thread starter.
So, they'll all be in one place. As new ones come up, I'll add them into this post, or if someone finds it first, feel free to add it as a reply, or start a new thread. Then I'll steal it! LOL!
This will take awhile, digging back through various forums, threads and links. Please be patient!
A special thank you to all the sharp-eyed members who found these first!!
Ron

Eneloop Long Term Capacity report 2+ years
Posted By UnknownVT
Replies: 11

Previously I did this with a set of Duracell Pre-Charged - re-badged eneloops (white top - made in Japan).

eneloop (Duracell Pre-Charged) long term report (2+ years)

This time a set of actual eneloops - 1st gen bought as part of the Costco eneloop powerpack.

I had marked them as #s 1-4 - so they were the very first I had ever used - the embossed date code was 06-10SM -
means they were manufactured Oct/2006 (please see: How to read Eneloop date code)

As in the previous report these were kept in my now seldom used Pentax K100D since the previous report on the Duracell Pre-Charged -
so at least since Dec/12/2011 - therefore just over 25 months.

I took a few shots with the eneloops to make sure they were still alive and could power the K100D - which they did -
then I discharge them in the Maha/PowerEX C-9000 at the standard 20% discharge rate = 400mA
and using 2000mAh as the capacity for the % remaining capacities

The results were:

#1 1243mAh (62%)
#2 1273mAh (64%)
#3 1229mAh (61%)
#4 1198mAh (60%)

There has to be a small/low drain of the batteries to keep date/time.

Hope that was of some interest.

Please don't use the comparometer. Use each camera's SAMPLES page instead. The reason is because the comparometer sometimes uses files that have noise reduction on, when comparing high ISO images. It is best to go to each individual camera's page and select the appropriate image to compare.

These are jpeg outputs from the camera (I think) -
k-3 ISO 100 - http://216.18.212.226/PRODS/pentax-k3/FULLRES/K3hSLI00100NR0.JPG
k-5IIs ISO 100 - http://216.18.212.226/PRODS/pentax-k5-iis/FULLRES/K52ShSLI00080NR0.JPG
D600 ISO 50 - http://216.18.212.226/PRODS/nikon-d600/FULLRES/D600hSLI00050NR0.JPG
D7100 ISO 100 - http://216.18.212.226/PRODS/nikon-d7100/FULLRES/D7100hSLI00100NR0.JPG

Of the ISO 100 shots above, I think the most interesting is the D7100 vs the k-3 - it seems the k-3 shows more detail across the frame. This could of course just be the lens (both are using Sigma 70 F2.8 Macro). Focus doesn't seem to explain it because I can't find a spot on the D7100 that appears sharper than the k-3. Of the all the lowest ISOs, I would say the k-3 wins in detail based on these images.

k-3 ISO 1600 - http://216.18.212.226/PRODS/pentax-k3/FULLRES/K3hSLI01600NR0.JPG
k-5IIs ISO 1600 - http://216.18.212.226/PRODS/pentax-k5-iis/FULLRES/K52ShSLI01600NR0.JPG
D600 ISO 1600 - http://216.18.212.226/PRODS/nikon-d600/FULLRES/D600hSLI01600NR0.JPG
D7100 ISO 1600 - http://216.18.212.226/PRODS/nikon-d7100/FULLRES/D7100hSLI01600NR0.JPG

In this set, I think the D600 is the clearly the cleanest. Looking at the black cup and the shadow of the lager, the D600 has the least noise. The k-3 looks a little odd to me - it looks like it has less noise than the D7100 and the k-5IIs, but it also looks a bit mottled - almost like there is some sort of noise reduction. However, the k-3 also clearly does not have any color noise in that section at ISO 1600. The D7100 appears to me to have fared the worst in chroma and luminance noise out of these linked images. Would appreciate people to review and let me know what they think.

As far as detail goes... oddly the k-5IIs is showing a little more detail in the fabrics than the k-3, perhaps the high MP is losing ground here. The k-3 is still very detailed, keeping in line and maybe ahead of the D600. The D7100 looks a bit bad at this point. I am not sure if the D7100's file is completely accurate..

k-3 ISO 6400 - http://216.18.212.226/PRODS/pentax-k3/FULLRES/K3hSLI06400NR0.JPG
k-5IIs ISO 6400 - http://216.18.212.226/PRODS/pentax-k5-iis/FULLRES/K52ShSLI06400NR0.JPG
D600 ISO 6400 - http://216.18.212.226/PRODS/nikon-d600/FULLRES/D600hSLI06400NR0.JPG
D7100 ISO 6400 - http://216.18.212.226/PRODS/nikon-d7100/FULLRES/D7100hSLI06400NR0.JPG

Looking at the k-3 vs k-5IIs files at ISO 6400, the k-3 looks like less noise, but also a lot more mottled/muddled. I'm not sure why. Looking at the D600's shots, it is cleanest in luminance noise, but has more chroma noise than the k-3/k-5IIs. The D7100's shot has the most noise out of the group. I am not sure if it is my monitor - but it looks like there's some sort of banding in the k-3 shots? I would like another set of eyes to check for me...

The amount of detail at ISO 6400 in the k-3 shot looks to be diminished compared to the rest. My thoughts here are: these are JPEGs straight from the camera with NR settings off. However, Pentax has a tendency to force NR on their high ISO JPEGs regardless of settings. If someone can process the RAW files to check the jpegs, that'd be great. Preferably with a neutral RAW converter and no modifications to the images whatsoever.

Edited link to D7100 ISO 100 file.

Lightroom Tethering not supported because of Pentax
Posted By Kunzite

Pentax (Ricoh Imaging) would have not to give Adobe an information, but:
- to write a SDK
- to test it
- to release it to Adobe and other 3rd-parties, maybe even as a public download
- to offer support for it
Assuming the firmware is ready for commercial-level tethering (and not only service usage). The firmware side might have to be validated as well, and changes could be necessary.

I'm not saying they shouldn't do it, just putting things in perspective.

AF - Never had any issues with the k-5 or k-5II, they more than meet my needs. I never use AF.C or shoot things that move though and that seems to be the areas most complained about. So not a draw for me.

WB - The K-5 AWB is pretty good, no complaints and for most of my shots, I set it to fixed and use a gray card anyway. Shooting in RAW, WB just is not a big deal. So not a draw for me.

Exposure - Don't really have any complaints about the k-5 or k-5II, they both underexpose about 1/3 - 2/3 stop and I just leave exposure compensation at +1/3. Shoot in RAW and adjust. So not a draw for me.

Video Improvements - Never shot any video on the k-5, I did on the k-x, once. So not a draw for me.

Dual SD slots - I guess if I was shooting weddings or something I can see this but for what I do, not needed. Not a draw for me.

No AA filter - I think I can see an improvement in the k-5IIs over the k-5 so I'm all for no AA. But I already have that on the k-5IIs. So not a draw for me.

8.3 FPS - I tried burst mode on the k-5 once but it scared me as things were happening too fast so I never used it again ;). Not a draw for me.

27 AF points - I only ever use the center point on the k-5 or k-5IIs so all those points just seem confusing, too much work to figure it out. Not a draw for me.

WiFi - I know what it is but I'm not sure why a camera needs it.......

Tethering to phone - I probably would use tethering in the studio if I could plug a wire in and have Lightroom import the pictures. Using the phone seems too complicated for an old guy.

FLUCard thingy - I get a flu shot every year because the doctor says I should. Not sure why the camera needs one though.........

200,000 actuations - Not sure I'll live that long. But it sounds impressive.

Focus Peaking - I usually try to get my focus to peak, or is this like the pixel peaking I read about?

More AF modes - I'm still trying to figure out why I need AF.C instead of AF.S, now they add more modes? I'll have to bring my son along so he can explain the camera to me..........

24MP - Okay, I'll buy that, more is always better right?

Note: Just in case my dry humor did not come across, this post is intended as satire. No cameras were harmed in the production of this post. I think the k-3 is a huge step forward for Pentax and will be buying one. Hey, it has 24MP what more do you need to know?

K-5 For Astrophotography
Posted By Skymist
Replies: 1,131
There has been no astrophotography thread for K-5 yet, so with your permission I'll start one. In forums without a specific forum for this kind of subject, I've seen a thread like this remain active for years. Let's see your K-5 sky photos, all kinds, including stars, planets, deep sky telescope objects, spacecraft, satellites, and atmospheric phenomena. Also advice, data, and ideas.

To start with, I want to post the data I took for the camera's built-in interval timer. It's a cool feature that the K-5 has the interval timer in the camera, so you can do without attaching an external one. In the menu, you can set the interval timer with a shutter interval, a total number of activations, and a time to begin the activations. The firmware acts like a finger pushing the shutter - that is, the interval you choose is the time between shutter activations, not the time from when the shutter last closed. That means, if the camera needs 1 second to process each shot, and you have the shutter open for 30s, you must set the interval to 31 seconds or more. That's because the camera must be ready for the next shot when the timer fires, or that shot will be skipped.

The issue is complicated by the Dark Frame Subtraction feature, DFS, which in the menu is called "Slow Shutter Speed NR". If DFS is on, after each shot the camera takes a reference frame with the shutter closed which is then processed with the image to remove hot pixels and other problems, at the cost of almost doubling the time per shot.

Using my K-5, I determined the minimum interval time for each of the long shutter times. Enter this value, or higher, into the interval time menu. Using too short a time will cause shutter activations to be skipped; using too long a time will unnecessarily waste time, and we don't want to do that if we are taking sky pictures. As you would expect, the values for DFS on are much higher than those with DFS off. You decide which you want to use.

Values in Bold are more efficient in time used, and have proportionally less dead time, than their neighbors. Use them if you can. For instance, 20s is a good choice for an exposure time - set the interval to 21s if you have DFS off, or 35s if you have DFS on.

Exp NoDFS DFSon
0.25 1. 1
0.30 1. 1
0.40 1. 1
0.50 1. 2
0.60 1. 2
0.80 2. 2
1.00 2. 3
1.30 2. 3
1.60 2. 4
2.00 3. 4
2.50 3. 5
3.00 4. 6
4.00 5. 9
5.00 6. 10
6.00 7. 12
8.00 9. 14
10.0 11 18
13.0 14 21
15.0 16 27
20.0 21 35
25.0 26 42
30.0 32 54

Some interval times are convenient divisors of an hour.
An interval of 6s gives 600 shots per hour.
An interval of 10s gives 360 shots per hour.
An interval of 12s gives 300 shots per hour.
An interval of 18s gives 200 shots per hour.
An interval of 36s gives 100 shots per hour.

K-01 peaking works in near darkness !

Friday night i went on the shore of the St Lawrence river where i like to go to photograph Great Blue Heron and Night Heron.

I was lucky to find one Night Heron fishing at the same place that i took a shot 3 years ago.

I could barely see the Heron with my eyes, it was late after sunset and getting quite dark out there.

This is where the LV and focus peaking of the K-01 proved to be very useful, i coud focus on the birds accurately!
After that shot i had to use ISO 1250.

This shot is sharp enough and i like the feeling of it.

Ah well - after a bit more investigating - I found what I wanted was in the AF2 setting rather AF1. So that's that bit sorted.

Struggling a bit with AF accuracy just at the moment. I was expecting slow AF in certain circumstances and that's not really an issue for me, but AF doesn't seem to be producing very accurate results at the mo. Will investigate further.

For my money "crippled" means intentionally choosing not to implement a feature that would add little or no cost to the camera simply to protect a higher model. There are "dormant" features on entry-level Canon and Nikon cameras that can be enabled by a firmware hack proving that those features were simply turned off to give users an incentive to upgrade. For instance incompatibility between the pop-up flash and proprietary speedlights in their entry level DLSRs. This is an example of "crippling" a camera.

The K-r could have been released with more functionality, weather sealing, and better IQ, but those changes would have increased the cost of the camera. Perhaps a benefit from Pentax's standpoint of not including those features is it gives users an excuse to upgrade to the K5, but it is not the primary motivation for excluding them; cost is.

Brief Word On Mirror Flop
Posted By Schraubstock
Replies: 16

Hi

I had the dreaded mirror flops (sorry the camera did) and it was repaired under warranty. The problem is a faulty mainboard component (Pentax I think call it a top board) and a new one was installed in my cam. Since PENTAX know what the problem is I would assume the fitted a new mainboard into your cam also. To check up on this do the folowing:

Download PhotoMe if you not already have done so.

Load a pre-repair photo and write down the following:

Manufacture Date
Camera has been serviced (has the service bit been set or not?)
Production ID
Internal Serial Number?
Shutter Count

Now load an after-repair photo and compare the above. If they have replaced the mainboard, as they should have done, all these data should be different. Also all your custom settings should be reset with the new board installation.
Since a new board should have zero shutter count, if the board was replaced there should now only be the count of their testing recorded. In my case it was 40.

If you find there is no difference between the before and after repair data then I am afraid you still have the old faulty board. They have done nothing or very little.

Hope this will help.

Greetings

K5 menus

Hi there Bob ....

You don't need to dig "through endless menu items to find" the shake reduction parameter.

Press the [Info] button on the back of the K-5 until you get to the second screen, select the shake reduftion parameter. you can then use the rear wheel to enable to disable it at will. The K-5 is intelligent enough to remember this parameter, so that the next time you reach this screen i is already selected and the rear wheel will act as your 'shake reduction lever'

The beauty of the [info] display pages is that you can use the rear wheel to change many other parameters quickly.

The 'morons' who designed the K-5 weren't actually morons at all, they made the ergonomics a lot better. What happened is ... you complained before learning the camera properly :)

Hello fellow Pentaxians,
I am open for any advices or discussions for Pentax FA 77 Limited vs Pentax DA* 55mm.
I currently use Pentax K5 and 31mm limited for daily shootings. I also have 77mm limited that I use for short tele and also some portrait shots.
I have used one of my friends DA*55mm and it gives out different pictures than 77limited.
It is much sharper and higher contrast than 77. Also it is WR.
Do you guys think DA* 55mm is better choice to have for K5 or should I stick with 77 limited?

Help me decide.

Thank you.

photozone.de did a test I trust and is in line with my observations.

In the center, the lens is sharp at all f-stops, sharpest between f/4 and f/5.6. However, edge sharpness significantly suffers wide open and is best at f/8 where it is said to be good (I still find corners at f/8 only satisfactory though). One should not shoot the DA15 at f/4 if important detail is in the corners.

But this is normal for a rectilinear lens where focal length is so much smaller than registration distance. Nevertheless, the DA12-24 has slightly better corner performance below f/8.

Your screen is 640 x 480. So in landscap a 7,7x magnification gives 1:1 (4928/640=7,7). When orientation is different, the magnification is different. When a portrait picture is taken 5,1 is 1:1 (3264/640=5,1).
