Dpreview really is/was the go to website for photographic news and will be dearly missed. I hope they can somehow float it away from Amazon.

I bought my Pentax ring flash new, only a few years ago. I wasn't aware it was no longer available.
I'll treasure it even more now :) By the way, I have moved the thread to the Flash sub-forum. |

Much of the value of using flash in handheld macro photography in general comes from eliminating camera movement blur at high magnification through extremely short exposures. Continuous light doesn't provide that, neither does SR sufficiently. Sensor pixel pitch is 4.86 µm on the K-1, so at 1:1 that amount of uncompensated lateral camera movement starts to reduce captured detail. Even in bright sunlight, my exposures at 1:1 and f/11 have less detail from motion blur or noise (choose your evil) than flash exposures.

I don't think there is anything available new and dedicated to Pentax at this time, the Pentax AF160FC is available only used, but likely the best you can get for the DFA100/2.8 with its matching adapter. I did improvise and built a similar adapter for a 3rd party ring flash using a DFA50 macro hood (slightly wider, same bayonet), it's definitely not advisable to attach anything heavy to the filter thread.

Most of the enthusiast photographers I know have both systems. There is a lot of cross-talk. And I am sure the DFA 50 was preferred over the DFA 85 because of "cross talk". The long DFA lenses are even longer on APSC (birders, ...). I don't use FF but have quite some DFA lenses. For example I personally find the DA 16-85 with the DFA 24-70 an excellent combination. The 16-85 for outdoors (nature, ...) and the 24-70 @F2.8 for indoors people. For outdoor sports the DFA* 70-200 with the K-3/3 is an excellent combination.
A 21mm makes an excellent APSC lens. The DA limited lens I never found really strong in terms of bokeh, I prefer the FA limited. For example the FA 77mm versus the DA 70mm, to me the FA is the clear winner if you can accept the CAs. In the range of 20 to 77mm for the limited characteristics, the size is not such a big driver. If the 21mm shows similar characteristics as the other FA, I will consider.

Finally it arrived.
I´ve had only limited time, so I took some non beautiful shots in the Garden. Please don´t be shoked by the "portrait" :hmm:
I took some comparison shots with the old sdm but my tripod moved between the sots, so it is not comparable.
As you can see, I´m using "only" the K3II.
I´ll make it the other way: I´m waiting for the pricedrop of the K3III.
I was so frustrated by the unstable performance of the old Lens....sometimes I get dream shots....and sometimes totally crap.
Hopefully the new one is better (it MUST be better, whan I look at the money I spend for it)

Reading about this, I wonder if Pentax haven't done some big rewrite... You Tube |

Actually, that's quite likely? Since the firmware is now Linux-based and so on?

The problem with relying on a bunch of mostly amateur end-users for feedback like this is that it is difficult to make direct comparisons when any improvement is only incremental.
Very few "test" scenarios will be repeatable and even fewer end-users will have a second non-updated camera body to make the comparison, so any results are likely to be mostly subjective opinion.

I fall into the f:e camp... that would be fun...
I expect the lens to be sharp, with good transitions into out of focus areas and nice bokeh.
But it isn't a * lens, which to me means it isn't super-fast (which I think is consensus here), but also mean other corrections are done differently.
It may have some field curvature that would have been corrected out on a * lens.
I would be very satisfied with a lens with significant field curvature wide open (which might make for some really nice wide-angle portraiture and "soft" corners wide open) as long as it still rocks the landscapes at f5.6 or so...
I am a little worried it might have more coma than I'd like if I want to do some dark skies with it, but I guess we'll see...

Yes, lots of hard choices with this lens. I'm limiting my lenses heavily, selling what I do not need and 16-50 and 55-300 would be sort of optimum currently for me first for trains second for planes, with 35 macro as "one trick pony" for flower photography if I am able to get it in silver. But then 20-40 is like 2000 PLN (so like 500$) cheaper then new lens and covers what I need including WR, it's drawback is lack of UWA which I sometimes use for close shots of trains and in museums and slower AF.
Argh, I hate such decisions. ---------- Post added 07-15-21 at 02:41 AM ---------- If you want a bit of close up shots and comaprisions new/old then check this. You Tube |

And ignore EN translations. There is some nazi tech in the lens according to it. Some Fuhrer technology :D

Thanks for that compliment Wim! It's not my best product image (a quick telephone image.....), but I've added a photo for you with the barrel extended.
I sold de SDM version years ago so no comparison possible atm.

Goodday everybody! For those who already had the chance to see some of the video's, you must have noticed that I'm very impressed with this new lens.
I'm looking forward to future tests and results that will without a doubt confirm my opinion. In the video above you will find quite a lot of work I made with the K-3 mark III combination and the new DA* 16-50mm.
For those willing to read and for a gallery with a selection of images, I wrote a blog as well: HD Pentax 16-50mmf2.8ED PLM AW ⋆ Mike Muizebelt Fotografie
Best regards,

I cannot comprehend a situation where a camera-triggered flash and O-GPS1 would be used for the same shot. If you just want geotagging, use your phone and you don't need O-GPS1. If you're doing astrotracing, camera-triggered flash is not helpful. If you need it for fill during a long exposure, just hold the thing in your hand and press the test button.

In the age of film, I used to travel with an old cooler I could keep my camera in during hot weather, but now I just shield my camera bag from prying eyes.
