Still can't figure out how Movie mode works on the kx:

If I set my ISO at 200, select aperture in Movie settings at Fixed, use an old M42 Tak set at 5.6, what the hell is the camera doing to give me proper exposure? Is it changing the ISO? (And as I understand, once you pull the trigger on a clip you're shooting, it locks in your initial exposure--it doesn't change it on the fly as you're shooting.)

Or is the camera changing the shutter speed? And I can't understand how shutter speed has anything to do with video, although I suspect it does based on some reading I've done.

Help!

Okay, and thanks! Because unless I'm missing something, you can't do any of this shite on the kx.

And I'm a low ISO guy, so you don't have to sell me on that point!

Advice on Lens for NY trip

Ex-New Yorker here!

1) Wider is better--Manhattan streets are narrow. I can't imagine needing longer than 50 for most stuff.

2) NYC is one of the safest places on Earth these days. This fact pisses off a lot of New Yorker haters, but it's true.

3) No tripod--it's not worth it. NYC streets are busy and crowded. What kind of shots do you think you'll need a tripod for? Unless it's Central Park, which I find really boring photographically unless it's snowing, there are few places you're going to be able to use one--the crowds will knock you down.

4) Plenty of wonderful architecture in NYC if that's your thing. It's one of the three oldest large cities in the country. Often overlooked is the Woolworth building (don't know what it's called now), Chrysler Building, and St. Patrick's--all for incredible INTERIOR shots.

5) Try to devote some time to Greenwich Village (east AND west Village), SoHo (which stands for "South of Houston Street"), and the Lower East Side.

Have FUN! You're gonna love it!

Hi, Mungo--and have fun with your new toy!

One of the things that I tell people who are just learning photography is to look through the viewfinder as if you're viewing a painting. Look at EVERYTHING in the viewfinder--not just your subject in the center.

And along these lines is this:

No camera can totally fix bad lighting conditions. Yes, there are tools at your disposal, like flash, to give you more light--but that doesn't mean it's BETTER light. Other tools are faster ISO, slower shutter speed, adjusting color balance, and more open aperture to compensate for inadequate light. But again, nothing on earth beats proper natural light.

So...

If you want to get the best picture possible of your dog in his/her crate, don't expect the camera to do a better job in poor light than simply moving the crate towards the window, with natural light flowing in and painting the scene. Know what I mean?

It's the same thing when you're shooting outside. Study the light conditions around your subject before pulling the trigger on the shot.

But movie mode isn't JPEG.

Can you shoot b&w movie mode with your K-5, or you never tried?

---------- Post added 03-18-14 at 09:41 AM ----------

Duh....that makes sense.

No mirror.

Was this camera designed specifically for video, or are their still photo users who just want the LCD?

She did me in too, but that's besides the point.

So is the K-30 BEFORE the K-3, and when did the K-01 come into this? Is the K-01 still available new?

------------------------------------------

Edit: Okay--you can still get the 01, and I see it's mirrorless.

Does that mean I can view via the viewfinder, and don't have to use the monitor?

WHAT'S HAPPENING!?

Thanks for the welcome back, and your nice words.

I'm still a Pentax guy through and through, and want to get into video to get my juices going again. Plus, with all my classic M42 lenses, I figure I can really get some nice feels to my clips.

---------- Post added 03-18-14 at 08:27 AM ----------

You can't do anything for the movie mode in k-x at all. Are you sure those K-5 controls work for movie mode?

I'm more than ready to buy another body, even if it's used and not the latest and greatest.

Hola! Como estas! Da me cerviche!

Check out my signature below for my M42 lenses. My favorites are my Taks--35/2, 85/1.9, 50/1.4, and 55/1.8 (real sharp!). I also have a 105/2.8 that I never liked and gave to my son, but since he lives with me (he's only 17), I can always take it back. (HAH!)

Have you checked out any Russian Helios lenses yet? The old ones are mostly pre-set, AMAZING bokeh, and real inexpensive. Check out the Helios lens club here.

I LOVE shooting with these old lenses! I'm glad you do too!

Hi, guys. Some of you might remember me as a frequent visitor to this forum.

The last few years haven't been real good to me financially and career-wise. It's been a B*TCH, but I'm still hanging on. Thank GOD for my wife, and kids, but unemployment at 57 ain't a pretty thing.

So I want to get back into photography to get my spirits up, and below is what I have in mind.

1) I still just have the k-x, and have no knowledge on the new bodies out there. For now, I'll work with the k-x, but I need advice on the bodies to upgrade to for what I want to do now. Don't really care about WR if that's a dollar deal-breaker.

2) As some of you know (and see my signature for gear list), I'm big into manual M42 lenses, and I don't see this love affair ending anytime soon.

3) I want to now get into DSLR cinematography. I understand the k-x movie mode with its LiveView overheats real fast, but that's not a problem for what I have in mind. I just want to shoot 30-second, 40-second clips and edit later.

4) Yesterday was the FIRST time I looked at the k-x manual to learn about movie mode, and I can see the options are extremely limited. I can set resolution/quality, sound on or off, and automatic or fixed aperture. Obviously, with my manual lenses, I'm choosing fixed--so what exactly does the camera change for proper exposure? Does it adjust ISO?

5) You can't apply a b&w filter to movie mode like you can with a still shot, but I want all of my upcoming shooting to result in monochrome. ("Nebraska" really turned me on!) I haven't even INVESTIGATED video editing software yet, which will do this conversion, but I DO know that it's usually best to capture for B&W in lens, so my next question is:

Although I'll be shooting in RGB, with the only purpose being a monochrome end use, can I or SHOULD I use Red, Green or Yellow filters as you would with B&W film for desired effect? LIke, use the green filter to lighten foliage, or does this mean nothing because it's digital RGB?

6) Thanks for your help and insights. Me and the family are going to DisneyWorld on Saturday for a full week, for like the 20th time, and I'm sick of shooting the same old stuff. I figure I would play with DSLR cinematography to make my shooting more interesting.

And to light a fire under my a** again.

Hello, boys and girls. What happened?

I couldn't get back in here without reregistering, and I used every email address I could think of.

Mods, I'm pretty sure my gallery is still here. Is there any way I can activate my OLD account? Or maybe now that I'm newly registered, I should do a search for my old user name, reset THAT password, and work from there.

Ira, old Jew from Coral Springs, Florida, so shouldn't be too hard to find.

HAH!

What mode are you shooting in? And what shutter speeds is the camera doing for you?

You're going to want to use a mode where you can both pump up your shutter speed (250 minimum), and shoot between 5.6 and 8, for DOF. The faster shutter speed will freeze any flicker in the light, and 5.6 to 8 gives you some DOF. Stopping down any more than 8 will severely restrict your ability to do anything in low light.

So, your only variable will be ISO--and don't be afraid to pump that up into the stratosphere.

I'm surprised you're not into the Tammy 28-75.

Putting portraiture aside (for arguments' sake), I think it's one of the top 5 zoom lenses out there for Pentax DSLRs when it comes to price, IQ, and versatility/range.

I don't own one, and there are very few zooms I would consider owning in the first place--but that Tammy is one of them.

I am amazed by the outstanding shots I've seen done with it.

String--are you still around here?

I loved the production values on this!!!

I haven't TOUCHED video on my K-x yet, but I want to start--short form stuff like yours here, and using my manual Taks.

But I have ZERO clues on settings and post work. (I have an old Mac, but am buying a new PC laptop this weekend.)

Can you send me a PM explaining how you did your settings? I thought that with a manual lens, getting proper exposure was as simple as setting your ISO, setting your F stop on the lens, and the camera would select shutter speed and that exposure value would be locked in for the duration of the clip. But I just read a long thread here (6 pages) which confused the hell out of me about exposure and shutter speed.

Basically, I need the 5-step idiot's guide.

Let's also not forget that Laura never put herself in a position to BE booed. Her itinerary was carefully planned to protect her ego.

More important, though:

Michelle is a hero to vets--no one has worked harder on their behalf for their return to civilian life.

And most stupid, though:

Look at that video and listen to that audio again--because that sure wasn't much booing at all.

What the hell did LAURA ever do???

Thank you for your kind words. Even those who were only kind after you followed their convoluted paths. (HAH!!!)

Sam--yeah. I still got all my old Taks, and I don't care if he gets pissed about this or not, but...

Roger (Arjay Bee) sent me a replacement S-Tak 50 1.4...all the way to my Florida from his Queensland Australia...for absolutely freaking free. He did this like the day after I posted my miserable message.

Now, please don't think that he'll send YOU any free lenses, and please don't think that he wanted me to acknowledge this at all. But the how the hell could I not?

It was the nicest thing anyone has ever done for me...it lifted my spirits when I most needed it...and it confirmed why I love Australia.

Mike, I think that's both our problems/situations as well.

Someone recently gave me a mint PK-mount Vivitar 75-205 macro-focusing zoom (whatever that means), plus a mint Pentax M SMC 55 2.

And I have no desire at all yet to try either lens because I would have to remove my M42 adapter.

Filter Holders: Filter Systems?????
Posted By Ira
Replies: 12

1) I use a knock-off P system from eBay, and it takes hood modules so you can use several to make the hood as deep as you want.

2) The CP is circular, there's a slot just for it, and you can manually spin it. The problem is, it's a little tricky fitting your finger into the space between the filter and hood, so when you're just using the CP, it's easier to just spin the whole assembly. The CP slot is closest to the lens, right where the holding ring screws in.

3) For the cheap cost that I paid for the knock-off--and I owned real Cokin in the 80s--I don't see the point of going for the more expensive brand-name. It's just plastic.

4) For proper hood use alone, this system can't be beat. You just carry 3 little modules with you, and extend your hood as much as possible prior to vignetting to handle a hundred different FLs. And even though all of my lenses are old 35mm full frame where vignetting isn't hardly ever an issue, it's still a pleasure to work with.

5) I have a feeling though that you may have a problem with vignetting on the 10 end of your 10-20. (Maybe someone who has that range can chime in.) Since the Cokin system is going to place the CP a number of millimeters (centimeters?) forward of the lens surface, you might have issues.
