Dear Pentax,

Cameras should be held to one's eye.

who cares for bad AF under tungsten light ?

Saludos cordiales...

Photokina 2010, Pentax and the full frame mystery

Hi,

I've just published a blog post subtitled
"Why at this year's 2010 Photokina exhibition, Pentax may not get
away with ignoring the full frame conumdrum."
I argue that launching K-r and K-5 which both are APS-C cameras is not enough to keep Pentaxians happy campers. This implicitely discloses that Pentax is not currently planning to release anything related to full frame at Photokina 2010.

I argue that at Photokina 2010, they have to publish their full frame road map too or they will loose their enthusiast base which is expected to buy K-5, lenses and to further invest into the Pentax ecosystem. I argue that to stay silent on the topic is almost suicide. I further say that starting to release full frame lenses is a better move than to rush a full frame camera now. It's the roadmap which is required, not an immediate product. Faith in the future.

Tell me what you think. Shall we make it an Open Letter to Pentax?

Why Hoping for Pentax to Develop a FF DSLR?

Pentax had already re-released some of their old FF lenses. this includes the manual focus A50/1.2 and the previously defunct FA35/2. we might be seeing some kind of a trend here. Pentax users are just fine with the old FF lenses, so there's no a real mandatory need to come up with new FF lenses ASAP but rather re-release these old ones for use for the camera. new lenses can wait and can always come out for some other time.

just for twist, so what's wrong with these lenses >>> K15, FA20, FA24, FA31, FA43, A50/1.2, DA55, DA70, FA77, FA/DFA 100, A135/1.8, FA135, FA200/2.8 or F4 Macro, DA200, DA300, FA300/4 or macro.

FA28-70, FA20-35, DA60-250, FA80-200, FA250-600.

these lenses are more than enough to satisfy every Pentaxians wet dream.

who cares about SDM and WR?

the only thing that Pentax needs to do is to build an FF body and put their old lenses back into circulation. for sure, developing such body is much cheaper than how much Pentax invested with the 645D and it's new lenses.

Potential ka-bosh on Pentax FF in the near future due to Sony rumor?

There are a few key points of contention here.

1. FF will always be more expensive/bigger/heavier.
2. FF does not offer a significant advantage, APS-C is 'good enough'.
3. FF is not something that most consumers will ever care about.

All of these things are wrong for a variety of reasons.

1. We know that digital technology always, always, always gets cheaper. Go ahead and try to find a 6 MP sensor in a new DSLR. You won't. A 6 MP sensor is so cheap now and so outclassed that it isn't worth the cost of the metal and plastic in the camera body. I'm not saying that a K100 can't do good pictures, just that economics dictate that noone is making them anymore because there isn't a way to make money doing it. This is the same exact thing that has happened in EVERY technology sector, ever. Sensors used to be expensive, but they are quickly going to become one of the cheapest parts of the camera. As others have noted, size and weight aren't good arguments because FF can obviously be made small - look at all the old film SLR's.

2. It is a physical inevitability that FF offers more performance that APS-C. APS-C is good enough for many purposes, but SLR buyers are almost always after IQ - if they care more about size, then they will be looking at a P&S or an EVIL. And, even EVIL can be FF. Also, everybody seems to be ignoring the lens resolution factor. Many think that APS-C has already come close to the limit of what lenses can offer in terms of resolution. Do you really think that manufacturers are just going to sit by and stop improving the sensors? Sensitivity and DR can only be taken so far for a given format, as there is a physical limit to how many photons you have to work with. We're getting close to a point that there isn't realistically going to be much left to improve, sensor-wise, with APS-C. And, whether or not APS-C can already do some amazing things (it can) when it comes down to it, if a consumer has to choose between an amazing camera and a slightly more amazing camera, they will choose the latter. Pentax shouldn't be content to be in the former category.

3. To those saying that consumers don't know the difference between APS-C and FF: nobody knew what a megapixel was 20 years ago, either. And, more recently, the average joe didn't care about sensitivity, but now that resolution has reached an optimum level for many, ISO range is being advertised a lot more than it ever was before. What happens when ISO gets topped out? Eventually, manufacturers WILL be looking for whatever edge they can find, and the physical limits of APS-C will mean that FF is the place to find it. Honestly, the only reason anybody ever went with a cropped sensor in the first place was that the tech was so damned expensive. Now that it is cheap, why should we stay strapped to an inferior solution?

Nobody is saying that APS-C is going to disappear entirely, but anyone who looks honestly at the situation has to realize that this isn't about what we want or don't want, it is about physics and economics. Camera manufacturers have always competed on technology and price, and when tech gets cheaper it gets used to try to gain market share. You have to use every advantage available to you or go out of business. Pentax will have to go FF or will become even more marginalized, maybe past the point of survivability. Maybe they don't need FF at Photokina, but they need it soon or things will get ugly.

Nosnoop, you keep talking about the consumer market. Don't forget that this audience is already served by other brands. The consumers who buy a Canon or Nikon (or a Pana/Sony/Oly EVIL for that matter) because they have seen or heard a commercial featuring a product of that brand, and only because of that. This audience is also served by Pentax through the magnificent K-x.

But... the well-informed and advanced users, while still inclined to buy products of the aforementioned brands if those suit their needs, are the ones that Pentax wants. Selling fewer products with a bigger margin is what Hoya wants. Don't forget that the overhead costs of spawning shitloads of cheap DSLR's/EVIL's are huge. Maybe it's not so bad for Pentax to keep in its niche? I don't see the point for Hoya to aggressively enter the fierce consumer market if they can earn more than enough by selling well-designed, good-quality cameras (at a little premium). I like to think of Pentax as the Japanese (upscaled) Leica company. For the more advanced users who enjoy photography with superbly crafted tools, not the plastic mass "products" for consumers.

Back to FF: as a brand targeted to the enthusiast amateur Pentax SHOULD come out with a FF model. Forget about "competing" with the 5D MkII, Nikon D700 et al. It's not about competing, it's about Pentax as a whole. Forget talking about "market share", because even with 5% the number of 5D MkII's sold worldwide, Hoya might earn shitloads of money with a FF model. Marketing dollars are not needed, such a model will sell well all by itself (like the 645D does).

Please let's give Pentax the chance to stay like Pentax and not like the next "just another" cheap consumer brand you can buy at your local Walmart.

Meanwhile, I will cherish my K-7 a little more :)

They did not "want" more than 3.1 MP's either. Or 15x zooms in a compact.

What's your point? This is a democratic vote?

Consumer demand is driven by the capacity to supply using available technology in an economic manner. If FF can become more economically feasible (and it will), then you WILL want FF. IN fact, good marketing will even get you willing to pay more for that privilege (like $600 vacuum).

I am simply describing the workings of the consumer goods market as it is, not as you imagine it.

it hope they wouldn't use the name L-x for EVIL camera. i say it should be called M-x - since original MX was designed to be as compat and portable as possible.
