An interesting idea, but then it wouldn't be a mirrorless camera any more, so why not just use a regular mirror and PDAF?
There's a thread way back at the beginning of the K-01 Forum showing the internals of the K-01 - it is truly jam-packed with electronics, so while they could extend the grip, they couldn't make the groove any deeper. The space isn't there to do it. The secret to using a K-01 is to use two hands, as you would a film SLR. Used in that way it is a quite stable, comfortable platform. I've successfully and comfortably used a 980g K200/2.5 with this camera, though I wouldn't go longer than that.
This is a second camera for us and a first camera for great images by a snap shooter. It isn't intended to substitute for a dSLR. Yes, it has limitations, but we need to appreciate it for what it is and stop asking Pentax to change it into what it isn't. They're giving us the K30 for that. :)
IMHO Focus peaking and the proper grip style make this a better camera for manual lenses than an APSc dSLR with its tiny viewfinder will ever be.

One way I've been able to create a stable platform (when needed) is to put my elbows into my side, put the strap around my neck, then pull the camera away from me to tighten the strap. That gives me three points of support.

Some kind of hat is a necessary wardrobe requirement for me in full sun. A ballcap interferes with the top of the camera when I use a dSLR (the way I wear one, anyway), so I have settled on a Tilley Hat for most outdoor wear. It was originall made for sailing so the loops can be configured to hold it on in a gale, the brim doesn't strike the flash bump and it should shade the LCD nicely. Clearly a geeky fashion accessory suitable for a Pentax shooter. People just look - they don't ask silly questions. |

The Peek focus works throughout the frame. Everything that is in focus has a white halo around it. If you are taking a photo of a chess set and the pawns are in focus then each and every pawn has its own halo.
It is exactly what you would want it to be

And hopefully they end up stepping up to a full DSLR at some point to get the additional quality and features.
Hi. New guy here. Just curious about the above. If the K-01 sensor is as good as or even better (newer iteration, after all) than the K-5's, why would anyone need to step up? The K-01 is going to be in the top ten of all cameras (dxomark ratings), yet so many here are labeling it a beginner's camera. Kind of patronizing really. I'm a long-time photog (enthusiast division), have owned film SLRs, DSLRs, med. format, rangefinders - definitely not a newbie - and I'm only seeing a lot of positives for this camera.
I use a Lumix LX5 for my job. To me framing via display is a perfectly valid way to shoot. I'm glad there's no EVF on the K-01. Any EVF I've checked out (including the NEX7's) is seriously deficient in giving a true representation of a scene. Plus I wear glasses.
Final point - incredible bargain. What other brand makes it possible to have a top-ten IQ camera and 4 high quality primes for about $2100.00 (New 21mm, Used 28mm, New 40mm, New 70mm). Certainly not the latest offerings from Canon, Nikon, Fujifilm, Sony or Olympus. So chill out, everyone. The K-01's a winner. Plus, don't let anyone tell you it's ugly.

Here are our official unofficial remarks about the K-01, as well as a few videos showing its continuous shooting and AF abilities: Pentax K-01: Initial Hands-On Impressions - Pentax Camera News & Rumors - PentaxForums.com
Off the record, I am quite impressed by this camera, as it performs better than the current DSLRs in many areas, including image write and review speed and live view latency. The unlimited continuous shooting buffer is also nice, though they could have allowed for more than 6 frames at maximum FPS...
My favorite thing so far is that it doesn't slow down even when the buffer is full: you can continue composing, focusing, and shooting at will (though at a maximum of 2FPS until at least some of the bugger gets written to the card). The AF is quite good overall (more than adequate for most purposes); my main complaint is that it makes screwdrive AF lenses even louder than it would be on a DSLR as the camera has to do more guesswork. The new CDAF algorithm always moves the lens forward a bit, then back a bit, then rotates it until it locks focus. During this process, the AF motor doesn't operate at full speed (most of the time), unfortunately.
The design is pretty good in real life, and I'm sure some people will like that the entire menu system is branded with the K-01 logo...

Ha! With the K-5 not only had I downloaded the manual (and installed it on my Kindle) but I had also purchased a compatible battery and had it charged & ready & a RRS L-plate. |
