I'm from Massachusetts, and how did I miss the Pentax event. If you don't mind me asking, where was the event held and how do you find out about other upcoming Pentax events in the area? As an avid Pentax user for many, many years, I would love the opportunity to attend at least one Pentax events. Thanks.

Problem with Pentax DA 55-300

A new lens shouldn't have problems, especially if you paid full price. If you don't mind me asking, what store did you purchase the DA 55-300 lens?

I am considering buying the DA 55-300 lens, but I have an excellent tamron 70-300 Di LD that has given me no problems.

I had a K100D as my first camera, and then went to the K2000/KM. Both are great cameras that I found take great pictures. However, the K100D and K100DS shoot better in auto mode compared to the K2000. If you are willing to experiment with AV mode, and manual mode, you will not be disappointed with the K2000.

Filter, New Cap for DA 40mm prime lens

Thank you all for your advice. I realize now that the lens came with the hood and the tiny screw on cap -- very odd. I didn't realize that the hood was attached to the lens -- so different from my other lens. I'll take it out for a test practice.

Filter, New Cap for DA 40mm prime lens

I just bought a like new DA 40mm limited prime lens for KEH for $289 and am very happy with it so. I would like to know whether I should buy a filter and new cap for this lens. I assume I will need a 49mm UV filter with this lens. How would I find a cap for this lens?

Generally speaking is it a good idea to buy a filter for the Pentax prime lenses? I have filters on my tamron lenses.

should I buy a K-m?

I owned a K100D with the 11 point AF system and now am a happy owner of a Pentax K2000/KM. The two cameras operate differently, with the K100d being a great low light operator, so I generally keep it at iso 400. With the K2000, I found that iso 200 for even indoor shoots gives you fantastic results with my limited primes. I like the idiot proof faster AF system of the kM. While the K100D gave your more focus point options, you could occasionally
misfocus (user error) with it.

That being said, I was not happy with the K2000 on auto mode -- it falls short of the right combination of AV, shutter speed, and ISO, so it will be a problem for beginners or those who want a point and shoot camera. But I received fabulous tack sharp results in manual mode or AV mode with the K2000. It is also a very portable camera with a DA21mm or DA40mm lens attached to it.

I can't comment on the battery life just yet. However, when you purchase the k2000, Pentax sends a pamphlet on the Energizer AA lithium batteries. I plan to carry an extra set with me in case my old batteries run low.

Tamron 28-75 lens and Pentax ME

Does anybody know whether the Tamron AF 28-75mm f2.8 XR Di LD lens can be used on a Pentax ME? If this lens has an aperature ring, can you use it on a full frame SLR camera?

Thanks

For those of you who own a FA 50 f1.7, how sharp are the pictures, when stopped up, for general purpose photography, such as street action, group shots, running children/pets, action shots, etc? I am torn between the Da 40 and the FA 50, but would like a sharp lens for street photography, travel, etc. What do you all suggest? I already have the DA21 for indoors, but it's too wide for outdoor people shots.

Pentax K-M Zoom Lens needed

Tamron 70-300mm lens for the price is a great deal. Your other options, and check the lens review forum on this site, are Sigma 70-200mm lens with a faster aperature (more expensive) and the Pentax telephoto lens you already mentioned. I use my Tamron 70-300 for tennis action and when mounted on a tripod outside, it works well.

Your other option is to buy a fixed lens 300mm lens which may have a faster aperature .
Good luck in your search.

Pentax K-M Zoom Lens needed

Depends on how much zoom you need. The general rule with Pentax DSLRs is that the lens are equivalent to 1.5 times the focal length. I find that Tamron makes very good zoom lens for Pentax DSLRs. I have a fast standard zoom lens, the Tamron XR Di 28-75mm f2.8 lens which was a great first time lens. New lenses are getting expensive, so a gently used lens will be a cheaper route to go.

If you want to sell a lens, how do you know whether the buyer is reputable and will not rip you off. In other words, after you receive payment, and send the lens to the buyer, what happens if he claims he never received the item and wants his money back? Also, what happens if he erroneously claims that the product he received from you is broken?

Any feedback from disreputable buyers and tips for selling?

Thanks,

Too much noise in KM/K2000

I too have the K100D and just received the K2000/KM. I experienced the same frustrations when I compare pictures from these two cameras with the same settings indoors (evenings) using my Tamron 28-75mm lens. I only shoot jpegs.

With the K100D, my default setting was iso 400 since the camera constantly underexposes. With the K2000, like my canon G10, I can't go above iso 200. Still experimenting to achieve sharp pictures at iso 400. Using the manual mode, the K2000 overexposes compared to the K100D which gets it right on.

I also found that the K2000 on auto iso, at least indoors, is another problem as the camera keeps selecting iso 800. On the positive side, the camera shutter is quite snappy.

Very nice picture, and certainly the jpg quality looks great with no sharpening artifacts. I assume you used the bright setting with contrast and sharpening on +1. How do you find the colors using the bright mode on the K2000/KM? Any other tips you found helpful for using this camera?

What settings do you generally use on your K2000? I heard that Jpeg compression on this camera is a problem? How do people overcome this with the K2000? There must be a way to get good jpeg pictures out of the camera with pp.

I am an experienced Pentax K100D user but am switching to the K2000/KM. I usually relied on manual mode which was easy to use on the K100D. Loved the jpegs with this camera.

With the K2000/KM, what are the best incamera settings for taking pictures (jpegs)? I do like my pictures sharp, but not oversharpend. I know there were discussions between using the bright vs. natural mode. Heard that the jpegs were too compressed -- is there anyway to minimize this without shooting RAW?

Question on shooting sports.......

I also have a K100D and the tamron 70-300mm lens which I use to shoot outdoor/indoor tennis. The general rule of thumb I use is to set my shutter speed much higher, at least 1 1/2 times, than my focal length. I also generally set my iso to 400 so I can stop the action with a higher shutter speed without underexposing.

Using a tripod (or monopod) is always your safest bet for getting sharper pictures. I always carry a monopod when I shoot indoor tennis scenes, especially wheelchair tennis events.

Play with the manual mode on your K100D, so you can figure out what is the best shutter speed and aperature setting for the scene you are shooting.

Hope this helps.

Pros and cons of the Pentax KM/2000

I've been reading this forum for quite a while with due diligence and still have not found any convincing arguments as to whether I should upgrade from my K100D to the new K2000 (KM). I use my K100D quite a lot for family pictures, tennis sport shots, and some landscape. I find the Pentax JPEG picture quality to be very good, especially in terms of dynamic range, detail, etc, and the high iso is very decent. I have great shots of my son playing tennis that is quite detailed. My lens lineup includes Tamron 28-75mm , Pentax 21mm, Tamron 70-300mm and the IQ of my pictures clearly outshines the only other camera I can compare it to (Canon G9).

However, I do find the K100D heavy and the AF is slow indoors. While the focus is slow, most of my shots are in focus. I frequently use difference focus points on the K100D. I am eager to switch to a smaller body for travelling purposes. I know the Pentax K2000 has faster AF--may be due to fewer focus points, but am not sure of its focus accuracy. I wonder whether the K2000 will be enough of an upgrade if I only shoot JPEGs.

LBA: Da 21mm f3.2 ltd

I can also provide feedback on the DA21mm ltd. which I bought at B&H Video store about a couple of weeks ago. I took it to sunny Key West to test it out on my K100D (no filter on lens).

On the pro side, the size of the lens is so small, so I could pack my K100D in a small case. My difficulty from using this lens was that you had to fight to keep it from overexposing on sunny days even when shooting family members by the pool, ocean, by tennis courts, etc. I tried to keep the aperature no wider than F5.6 in manual mode, but on auto mode, it zoomed to f8.0 when shooting. When I used manual, I had to set the shutter speed very high to control exposure, even though the ISO was set to 200.

It operates like a wide angle lens -- very little bokeh unless you zoom close to your subject. As a result, I did not find people shots very crisp compared to my tamron zoom lenses. This is probably a great lens for taking landscape shots. Personally, I want more crisp shots of people if I'm doing street shooting. I need more advice on what settings to use when using the DA21mm lens.

I like the size of the DA21, but am researching whether the FA50, DA40, or DA70 lenses might give me sharper pictures for street shooting. Looking for advice.
