DB2: yes it was quite a buzz.
Nixarma: The hike in was brutal, we got a late start so we ended up arriving at the camp area about 4:00 pm, hiking through the hottest part of the day was not a good idea. In fact it was bad enough that we decided to hike out in the middle of the night (9:30 pm - 3:00 am) so that we wouldn't have to do the switchbacks in the heat.
It was an interesting group of people too, my younger brother just graduated from college, they are all his friends, my wife and I were the old fogies of the bunch.
I assume you mean number 11 above which is a deceiving picture, those are wild grapes covering that valley as the trail goes through there are places where they are over your head. that valley was 150 - 200 yards wide and around 1/3 - 1/2 of a mile long. It was really cool. Here is another picture for scale:
If you look closely you can see my wife holding her hands up above her head in this one, she is to the right of the tree about even with the base. At this resolution she looks like sensor dust, but she is standing up (5'10").

Well I just got back from a 4 day trip to Havasupai, for those that have never heard of this place (which is probably most) its an Indian reservation in the Grand Canyon. It's very remote, after a 3.5 hour drive from Las Vegas to the parking lot, its a 10 mile hike (very dry and hot desert hike) to the camping area. The first mile or so is very steep switch backs (1000+ feet decent). Once you reach the campground you are with in 5 miles of 4 major waterfalls and countless cascades. Its very lush and verdant through this area, (quite the juxtaposition from the desert hiking in). Anyway I packed my K100d and tripod about 35 miles over the 4 days we were there and took 100's of pictures. The lighting conditions were challenging, lots of high contrast situations with the high canyon walls creating strong shadows. It was an amazing trip and well worth the effort to get there. Beautiful, I almost made it to Istanbul once, but got stuck in Romania, due to my brother having passport problems (We got pulled off the train at the Romanian border, with Hungary I think.) This images almost make me wish I'd left him behind ;)

Alright here is an abstract I did a couple weeks back

EDIT: I wont enter this one, but I did it at the same time I'm not sure which I like better. Anyone have an opinion?

Nice, my favorite is the last one too, although I think the first would have been the best with a little reflected light on the shaded side of her face.

Here are a few I've done, I started B&W back in high school so I've always had a soft spot for it too.
All were done with my k100d. Most with the kit lens.

I don't know if creepy is the exact word I would use, but its definitely got that edge to it. That doesn't mean its a bad shot though, sometimes creepy is good.

Well I'm going to go against the flow here. I shoot JPG 95% of the time.
I'm a software developer and spend 8-16 hours a day at my computer. When it comes to photography I like to spend my time out in the field not at my computer. I try to get it just how I want it in the camera and take multiple exposures on almost every shot and bracket 90% of my shots.
My post production is mainly throwing out over/under exposed shots or shots that just plain didn't turn out. I do tweak some of my favorites after the fact but that is probably less than 5% of the photos I keep.
But hey thats just me.

I think you are talking about minimum focusing distance which varies from lens to lens.
The focal length of a lens is defined as the distance in mm from the optical center of the lens to the focal point, which is located on the sensor. A zoom lens such as the kit can have an 18mm focal length or a 55mm focal length or anything in between.
Everyone has a hard time with this, its one of the hardest technical things in photography. Try metering on the far away things and using flash to fill in the foreground. Classes are a great idea, so are books. One of my favorites (gives a good overview of alot of photography topics. John Shaw's Nature Photography Field Guide he discusses everything in terms of nature photography but the concepts carry over into any kind of photography.

thrice, welcome to the forum, good to see at least one other pentaxian in Utah.
I've heard good things about the Sigma, the DA*'s should be fantastic. But the I've SEEN great shots taken with the kit lens. My personal opinion since you are new to DSLR photography would be to buy a lense or lenses in other focal lengths, before upgrading from the kit lense in that focal length... a 50-200, or a 14 prime, something to expand your focal length capabilities.
Learn to use the camera and kit lens well, and play with other focal lengths, you may find that you don't use some focal lengths as much as others, then buy the nicest lenses in the lengths you use the most.
Thats my $.02 and worth every cent you paid. :) Most of all have fun!
//Edit: Thrice you posted while I was writing... sounds like you are at least looking at other focal lengths, thats good.

I went to their ebay store and went to their tripod section. Sorted by ending soonest and then found the legs I wanted. I ended up sniping the legs for 42+shipping and the head for 38+ shipping. I know people hate snipers on eBay but if you really want the best deal thats the best way to get it.

If this is happening pretty regularly, with the same card and a similar number of bad files, I would put money on bad "sectors" on your flash card.
If you have a reader that shows your sd card as a removable drive (and are using windows) you can open your command prompt and type in : "chkdsk x: /f" where x is the drive letter assigned to your SD card, the /f tells the application to mark the sectors as bad you can leave that off if you just want to check for bad sectors. IF there are problem sectors this will decrease the size of your SD card, but in my opinion thats better than losing shots.

Hey all well I passed up 2k with my K100 this weekend, I've had it just about 4 months. I didn't realize that it had happened until I got home.
This is a new baby orangutan born in Utah's Hogle Zoo.
Here are a couple more from the zoo that I liked.

Very nice, 2 and 6 were some of my favorites.
2 you can see how cold it must be from the look on that guys face.
6 the guy on the canoe is holding it out of reach of the other guy, my first thought was "With friends like that..."
