Just an update.
Thanks for all the info. My better half decided on the Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8. Couldn't pass up getting it for $369, what with the potential AF issues of the 18-35mm, plus the better focal range, even though we give up the faster lens with presumably better optical quality. Still, for her photography, the 17-50mm is probably good enough. Again, thanks for the info, much appreciated.
Hmm...may need to dust off my K-r that's sitting lonely and try out the Astrotracer (have the GPS) one day.

She somewhat does. She likes her 35mm DA 2.5 and uses that in low light situations. She has the 50mm 1.4 but she just doesn't like the focal length. And she does want something a little more wider like a 24mm and a little faster as she is constantly going into high-iso territory with the 35mm. And unless I'm mistaken, there is not 35mm equivalent (FF) with a >2.0 aperture in AF Pentax land...which seems really odd. Sure, FF, but she has a K-5....
So the Sigma 18-35 would check a bunch of needs. Fast, good optically in a focal range that she would enjoy the most (albeit, the extra range in the 17-50 would be nice at times). Of course, the only problem with the 18-35 being weight, size, price and possible AF issues...
How is the Sigma 17-50mm compared to the 18-35 optically? ---------- Post added 11-24-17 at 10:46 AM ----------
That's definitely good to hear :) I would assume newer models would have a better chance of working fine, specially with the bundled USB mount thingie that B&H is bundling with the 18-35mm currently. ---------- Post added 11-24-17 at 10:48 AM ----------
Exchanging the lens is harder for us as we are thinking of getting it from B&H yet we live in Canada. Can't just take it back, we would need to ship it over the border. Not sure if there is any Sigma service centres around my parts. ---------- Post added 11-24-17 at 10:51 AM ----------
Are you saying that you had focus problems with the Sigma 17-50mm or the 18-35mm?
And yes, the Pentax 20-40 is a possibility. The main reason the 17-50mm is in play (besides the focal range) is because B&H is currently selling it for $369 which is significantly cheaper than the 18-35mm (and 20-40). ---------- Post added 11-24-17 at 10:56 AM ----------
Well, it's the optical qualities that has drawn my wife to the lens even if it's a little big for her tastes. But she's not the type who likes manual focusing (specially on a zoom), so if the lens doesn't behave on her K-5, it would become a big expensive paper weight. Also, unfortunately, upgrading the body (to say the K-3) is currently not in the cards so the lens must work with the K-5.
B&H is currently selling the 18-35mm with the Sigma USB Dock. Could the AF issues be resolved with firmware updates via the dock?

Hi,
It's been a long while since I last posted here. I have mostly been a M43 user but my wife's main camera is her K-5 and with the recent failing of one of her lenses, she's looking for a new lens and the Sigma 18-35mm has always been on her sights. The only problem stopping her from getting that lens has always been all the reports about the auto-focus problems.
So, the question is simply...has the problems with auto-focus been resolved? Or to be more specific, how would the auto-focus perform on her K-5?
And no, currently there is no real desire to upgrade her K-5.
If the problem is still there, she'll probably get the Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 that is currently on sale.
Cheers,
Hubert

Strange. Was there today also but didn't find anything in particular that I would call a big bargain. Course I only had an eye for particular items so I suppose I probably missed any good deals. Anything in particular you noticed? Not that it would matter I suppose since I won't be going back tomorrow. Oh well.

errr...I'm not sure where those numbers are coming from but the numbers I see is that the iPhone has a ~72% market share in smartphones in Japan which comes up to be about 4.9% cellphone market share in total. Now, if you have newer numbers than I do (April 2010 I believe) I would definitely want to see it as I'm very interested to see how the landscape is changing.
As for the Pentax colours, I don't see the colours taking off outside of Japan but if they do wish to grab a larger market share outside of Japan, it would be nice (imo) if they would create some more solid colours. The colours they have right now seems either a little pastel like or just slightly off making some of the colours cheap looking. Oh well, this is probably just my bias speaking though. I'm sure they know what they are doing. I would welcome more colours into Canada though...

Navy blue body, black grip, navy lens look really nice, otherwise, storm trooper colours (white on black). Sweet.

Bingo. And no, iPhones are not popular in Japan at all (iPads? No idea).

Umm...nothing personal but isn't the K20D generally speaking a mid-level cam? It certainly is price wise...

My wife was looking to buy a K200D and was eying the K200D with 18-250mm combo at Henrys when it disappeared. Talked to Henrys and they said that stock everywhere in all their stores has run dry (though that could be just in the gta area...) and that they don't expect it to be restocked.
Found it listed at Blacks which was selling them for $100 off ($599 with kit lens). Started calling Blacks store (as online it said out of stock). Found only a few stores still had one or two. Was finally able to grab one on Tuesday at the Woodbridge location (though it was sent from the Brampton location).
As a general note, although it may be still listed in the Canada/USA websites, the K200D officially isn't listed anymore on the Japanese website. And yeah, heard it was discontinued a while back also.

Unless I'm mistaken, which I certainly could be as I am a noob also, plus not having the 50mm 1.4, but the 50mm is softer wide open so depending on what aperture you used, it may not have been ideal. At least with my 50mm f2.0 lens, I hear people advice to leave it at f8 and change as the situation calls for it as it's rather soft at f2. I think your f1.4 is a tad sharper than the f2 but try a different setting and see how it goes.

It's actually an April fools joke.
Assuming the translation worked it should mention at the bottom that it's an April fools joke.
Plus if you read carefully, all the camera manufacturers names are messed up.
Eg. Pentax = Bentax.

Are the listed lenses the only Pentax lenses that are going up in price? How about the DA 18-200mm?
Also, does anyone know if camera bodies are going up?

Hey thanks. Took the light guard off and tried mounting the lens and it went on easily. Taking it off was another story. I guess I'll be trying to take off the Ricoh pin after all. Thankfully there seems to be enough info about how to do this so should be easy as pie :)
My question (pardon me if it's a dumb question) is about the light guard. Should I file it down or can I just leave it off? Other than guarding the lever (aperture lever?) does it do anything else? Does it actually block light somehow?

Now take a look at this photo.
And look at the top of the mount.
That curved wall like part.
It's much wider than any K-mount lens I have ever seen, albeit I only have 4 other lenses as reference.
What ever the case, this lens does not fit the Pentax K110D.
If the K200D is the same as the K110D, and if my Magnicon lens is the same as the Tokina lens then you may find it does not fit.
Can anyone confirm?

Well, this is my Magnicon lens.
It looks awfully like the Tokina lens.

I don't think so.
My wife has the K110D which isn't the same but I would expect it to be the same result.
I have a Magnicon 28mm f2.8 which is a Blacks photography brand lens which rebrands other brands like a Tokina lens. My Magnicon looks pretty much like your Tokina and may well be the same. In any case, in this image of your lens, you can't really see it from the angle but it looks like there is a curving wall that goes 2/3rds around the mount starting from that flat pin like thing that sticks out. If this is the case, then probably won't fit since mine doesn't. On other K-mount lenses, this wall like thing is only about 1.5 cm long as opposed to my 3+cm wall.
Sorry if what I'm saying isn't very clear. I can't think of how to make it more easier to understand. I'll see about posting a pic later if I have time.
Any thoughts anyone else?
