At the end of the wet season there is plenty of forage and the brumbies are looking in good condition. As the dry season progresses the forage dies back and the stock starts to move through town grazing and begging for handouts to try and get a feed. Some house holders water their lawns so the grass can be a source if uncut. This small mob greeted us in our front yard a couple of mornings ago (mid June) and were looking rough. The bolder ones scored a few apples from our fridge. |

From Waverly Cemetary, Eastern Sydney - The grave of Henry Lawson, one of Australia's most loved poets.
Henry Lawson (1867 - 1922) was born Henry Archibald at Grenfell, NSW to an immigrant gold prospector Niels Hertzberg (Peter) Larsen and Louisa Nee Albury. He was the eldest sibling of four and an unhappy child due in part to deafness that resulted from illness. Henry's interrupted schooling led to his leaving education early. His parents' marriage ended in 1883 and he and his siblings moved to Sydney with their mother where Henry attended night school, while working as an apprentice stagecoach painter.
Within a few years his first poems were published. His work appeared in The Bulletin and the Australian Town and Country Journal. His first published poem was "A Song of the Republic, 1 October 1887).
By 1890 Lawson had achieved some reputation as a writer of verse, for poems such as "Faces in the Street", "Andy's Gone with Cattle" and "The Watch on the Kerb", which were soon followed by some of his most notable works including "The Drover's Wife" and "While the Billy Boils".
Lawson was something of a legendary figure in his lifetime with most of his best work being achieved by the time he was 35. The next stage of his life was characterised by depression and alcoholism. Lawson spent time in Darlinghurst Gaol for repeated public drunkenness and failure to pay child support.
In 1904, Lawson was befriended by Mrs Byers, a fellow poet, who provided him with food and shelter for the rest of his life. Deeply depressed and perpetually poor, Lawson continued to write. In 1908, he recorded his time in gaol in the poem "One Hundred and Three", his prison number.
Lawson was buried in a state funeral on 4 September 1922, with many dignataries and a large crowd of mourners in attendance. Prime Minister Billy Hughes who attended the funeral acknowledged Henry Lawson as "the minstrel of the people."

In NZ it was possible to get your license at 15 years old. Don't know if that is still the case. As a highly agricultural country, a big percentage of young people were driving well before that age on their parent's property, so it made sense to license them at a reasonable age. I took my motorcycle licence as a 16 year old. I paid a learner's fee and possibly did a theory test but don't remember that and then a month or so later went back to do the practical. The police officer said ride around the block and if you get back here okay you're good to go. Officer was a bit annoyed when I returned in one piece as he just meant one block and I did two which then involved traffic lights and had kept him waiting at the entrance. Anyway, got the license.
A few months later a school friend wanted to get his motorcycle license and asked to borrow my bike. It was kind of the lunch hour or a study period so I gave him my bike key and he went out and grabbed my bike from the school parking lot and did his test. We walked out after school and he said "oh is that your bike - I used that one over there. Oops." Similar Suzuki TS125 with identical key it seems. (Mine was full knobbies, the other was more street adapted.)

Thank you for your appreciation. The rolls were developed and scanned commercially by Rewind Phopto Lab in Sydney. When I download the scans from their Dropbox I save the orignal scans then resize each image give them a minor levels adjustment if needed and a slight sharpen if needed and rename each image. I use the M40 2.8 lens mostly which isnt known for laser sharpness. But some images need very little adjustment. Then I put a frame on most of the shots. I used to use Photoshop but following a referral on the forum pages I now use Photoscape XPro. I like using high contrast film stock like TMax. If I had a K3Monochrome I would probably use the high contrast ode a lot.
