Shot with the K-3 at a triathalon here in Athens GA recently. Even with a kit lens, I still found the camera to be fast enough to make good images, even when cropped and reduced in size for a local publication.

I installed the 1.11 firmware a few weeks ago, and have triggered over 15k frames so far... NO MIRROR FLAP! :-)
Have used a variety of lenses, flashes, grip on/off, etc, auto-focus settings, etc.
So far... so good, for me anyway.

This shot was taken at the Hard Labor Creek State Park near Rutledge GA USA. This sunrise was just moments ahead of a storm front, and the sky closed out only a few minutes afterward. I the orange-golden glow at the water horizon only lasted for about 10 second so I had to shoot quickly.

Live -view from K-3 onto a Kindle Fire HDR ?

This may have been asked already, but I couldn't find it (sorry if it has!).

I have the K-3, and I'm wondering if anyone knows if I could use a Kindle Fire just as a live-view platform?
I don't necessarily want (or need) to engage the shutter, change settings, etc. I just want the Kindle for it's bigger view size.
My sight is not what it used to be, and especially since I shoot mostly landscapes, I don't need remote triggering capacity.

Any thoughts/advice? Thanks!

This photo was, quite literally, the very last photo I took in 2013. I was on my way to work and this sunrise was happening just as I was passing one of the nice Georgia State Parks areas, so I pulled into the public boat slip area and started firing away with my (brand new) K-3 Ltd. I was already late for work, and this was making me even more late, so I had to stop the session before I really wanted to. LOVE LOVE LOVE the new K-3, and I"m looking forward to upgrading to better/newer lenses too. Compared to my previous K100dSuper, the K-3 is just simply awesome. Looking forward to shooting in 2014 !!
Cheers, Chris in Atlanta

Black and white conversions can yeild interesting patterns and contasts when the natural colors just aren't very exciting, like in wooded areas in winter.

I have a box of blades from my grandfather's shop that he had in his basement. Some of these are over 50 yrs old, and are still razor sharp! I really liked the different styles, metal textures, and sawtooth sizes, and the way they stacked against eachother.

Why is nature photography so boring?

I'm going to agree with the OP's statements, but also disagree with some of them.
I could not agree more that if you are taking your camera out just to try to "duplicate" what AA did, or to mimic that shot in Arches NP that everyone has seen, then you might be missing the point of landscape photography all together. I agree with the OP, these kinds of reproductions are, frankly, sometimes, boring.
However, my landscape photography is secondary to my desire to get out and hike to remote places. I like going out early to see the lake when it is smooth as glass, going further than where the picnic benches are, etc. IF the shot presents itself, then I will get out my gear and try to capture the beauty. Maybe I'm a little strange, but I don't go out on a particular hike "expecting" to get a shot, but if I have my gear pack with me, I will be ready if there is something to shoot. I've never been to the Tetons, or to Canyonlands, or to the Oregon Coast... I would treat them just like my local parks, in that I want to hike WAY further than where most people will go. That is usually where the interesting shots are.

K100DS+WR twin kits lens??

I'm agreeing with all above who have said "no problem". I've tried dozens of lenses on my K100dS with no problems in focusing at all. After I bought that aftermarket DiCain shutter grip, the camera body was MUCH easier to hold and makes lens changes way quicker.
I know it was panned by the CanKon crowd, but I still use my K100dS all the time, it really is a good little camera. And with over 16k shutter trips, it still works good as new.

Atlanta Pentaxians !!!

Hey Jack, this looks like a really good idea. I've been wondering if there were many other Pentaxians here in ATL. I'm going to follow the MeetUp group site for a couple of weeks, I'm recovering from a pulmonary embolism and I just can't breathe enough to photo-hike at this time, but would LOVE to come on the shoots and attend the meetings when I feel well enough to do so!
Check out my crude website www.chrisblighphotography.shutterfly.com, and let me know if you think I could be of service to the group.
Cheers! Chris

why is chimping considered bad?

I'm just now reading this thread for the first time, and I'm absolutely cracking up!
Maybe I'm keeping the wrong company, but I have been shooting since 1979 and I've never heard the term "chimping" before... now that I know what it is, I have a couple of basic observations.
- If you read almost any article in Outdoor Photographer, a VERY respected publication, the Pros that offer tips/tricks will almost always TELL you to check your screen, and your histograms, just to be sure you are getting the shot that you invisioned. If you are out in nature or shooting sports (like I am often), you're only gonna get this scene once.
- If "chimping" is bad, then why do some of us who "chimp" sell so many pictures? OK, there, I said it openly to the universal photo community... I AM A CHIMPER !! Not after every shot, and maybe not after a group of 25, but I'm not going to be shy about looking at my work just because someone else with a camera is nearby!!
- I specifically remember almost ALL of the sideline pros during the SuperBowl "chimping" after every play... these guys are undeniably top-shelf professionals, in a constant-light arena, and certainly they are completely familiar with the cameras/lenses they use. If chimping is bad, then why are those 100 PROs chimping after EVERY play ?? !! ??

I don't care what anyone says. If I have the tool at hand (LCD screen), and want to be sure that the wide-angle vista landscape I'm shooting is exactly what I want, I will respectfully reserve my own right to spray, chimp, burp, fart, or anything else I wanna do!! If you are a "pro", and don't like it when I'm checking my h-grms, please come over and say something.... we will share a couple of bananas and talk it out like old friends, OK?? Do you mind if I chimp on your screen, I'd like to see what you are shooting !! Hahaha!

Hypocorism, THANKS for the link to the MS ICE pano stitching system !!!
I had been using the "free" version of the old ArcSoft PanoStitcher4, and it would only save as 1/4 sized files unless you paid the $99 subscription fee.... the ICE was free and it saves in full size stitched files !! AWESOME !!

Brightroom Events does not accept Pentax shooters!!

If the reason is they want only CanKon, then they really must be idiots.
I took hundreds of shots of my sons HS XC races with my K100d Super (only 6mp at that! ), and I had WAY more reqeusts from parents and students for reprints than anyone else. I even had competitors teams coaches asking me to forward shots of their runners, which really ticked off the dude from the local paper who was lugging around $10k of Canon gear and wasnt selling anything.

Its not the camera, its the SHOOTER that gets good pix, and if Brightroom wants to SELL PICTURES, then they would hire whomever would give them the best pix to sell. Like the previous poster said, the converter from SD to CF is cheap fast and easy.

Pentax Photo Gallery - Do you like it?

I'm just disappointed in the fact that the photo view itself is so small relative to my computer screen, but I still think it is a worthwhile site. Some of my clients have said that they think its cool that I am included in the PPG with such an international artist list, I think it gives me some branded "credibility" to be there.

If you have done large festival sales / booth, I need your advice

Hi Everyone!
I have recently been offered a booth spot at a very large (juried) art show, but I have never done one of these, and I need some advice from those of you who have sold at art shows...
- There will be approx 80k people at this show, based on last years' attendance, over a 2 day weekend. It is one of the big art shows in Atlanta.
- I've never even applied to an art show, so I'm kinda surprised that they said "yes" to me.
- My main question is stock supply. How many pictures should I have available... clearly I don't want to run out in 3 hours, but I don't want to spend $$thousands that I don't really need.
- What would a good proportion of sizes be? I'm thinking about keeping it simple and only offering 8x12, 12x16, 16x20, and maybe just a couple 24x36.
- Do people like to purchase with frames, or usually just the print. If just the print, should it be mounted already on a backer board? If framed, do I just have 1 kind of frame for consisency, or lots of different frames?
- What about price points, and should I get one of those cellphones that has a credit card swiper, or do most people bring cash??

Any "show advice" you could share with me would be most appreciated.
Best Regards, Chris

Left eye user, and glasses-wearer, here too.
If you are tripod or monopod mounted, try using your left hand as a temporary "hood" above/beside ... if nothing else it cuts down on some of the glare in the periphery coming in.

Hi Everyone, (my first post on the PF site :D )
I have been a landscape photographer for quite some time, but recently a club acqaintance saw the shots I did for my son's HS cross country team, and he said that I should join Brightroom and shoot events for them. I am trying to find out if Brightroom is "legit", and to see if they are worth the time/effort.
Of course, no one can guarantee what the pay for an event will be... but I'm not looking to spend 2 days shooting a Tough Mudder Event, for example, only to walk away with a $32 paycheck after expenses!!

Anyone with experience? Thanks for your advice!

Photoshop versus ACDSee
Posted By AtlantaChris
Replies: 4
As part of my recent laptop purchase, I got a free version of the ACDSee Photo Editor 2008, and I really like the parts of it that I've been able to figure out.
But all of the "how-to" articles I'm finding, both in the photo mags and online, exclusively give the cookbook instructions for Photoshop only. The names of the programs, and the functionality usage, doesn't cross over very well, and I feel like the tips I am reading about (mostly in Outdoor Photographer) would be very beneficial to my work.
Has anyone else found an ACDSee users guide in print? Their in program tutorials are too basic.
And/or, maybe the ultimate question, should I just go ahead and get with the communal program and get the Photoshop/plugins programs?

It would be worth noting that Im on a really tight budget.

Any advice or thoughts would be greatly appreciated!
Chris in Atlanta
