A few weeks ago I went to the small city (a population of only 1.5 million, what are we talking about) of Datong in Northern China. I didn't really take photos with a plan, and when that happens I tend to take a lot of street portraits, which is exactly what happened.

I went to Mongolia in August as part of a train trip from Europe to China (I only now processed the photos because up until last week I didn't have a laptop). Photos were taken with a K-5 with the DA15 and the DA70 (should be obvious which is which). I really love that set for traveling - small yet very capable.

Please let me know what you think, be it positive or negative.

Travel Yushu, a Year After the Earthquake

Yushu, an area in the southwest of Qinghai province (China) near Tibet, was struck by an earthquake a little over a year ago. Few buildings were left standing and the death toll reached into the thousands.

Now it is one big building site, garbage dump and refugee camp, all in one.

For more photos, please see my website.

Cityscape China's Changing Cities: Xining

I just returned from a 4 week trip through midwestern China (Gansu, Qinghai, Sichuan, Yunnan). One of the things I encountered was this neighbourhood in Xining, the capital of Qinghai province.

1. The dome of a mosque is seen through rubble of partly demolished buildings in the Eastern District of Xining, the capital Qinghai province, midwestern China.

2. The whole, predominantly muslim, neighbourhood is being replaced by new high rises, only the mosque will remain.

3. A man and his two grandsons sit outside their house. The character '拆‘ spray painted on the wall behind them means 'to be torn down'.

4. Empty houses await demolition.

5. Prayer time at the mosque.

6. Possibly out of protest, someone has written 'don't' (不) in front of a 'tear down' (拆) marking. Construction projects in China are often associated with involuntary evictions.

7. This woman, along with her husband and a friend, was stripping this house of everything usable - wood, copper wires, etc.

8. Construction workers have set up camp in partly demolished buildings.

9. A boy tries to throw a ball at his father, one alley away from the construction site.

10. A group of demolition workers pose on top of a partly torn down building.

11. Tearing out someone's bathroom floor.

12. Residents watch the construction site from their house's roof.

Yesterday I went along with the photography club of my university, which for me turned into an experiment with double exposures. You can do these in-camera with the K-5 (and probably other cameras too). Try it sometime, it's a very, very cool feature.

After Hong Kong the next stop was Guangxi. Mostly known for the scenery around the Li River:

But there is more to Guangxi than just this. Sadly though the weather did not help much when we were there. It was misty and cloudy and, because I wanted to try and focus on landscapes, this was rather unwelcome. The pictures turned out without much in the way of contrast, and I'm not totally happy with most of the landscape pictures. In any case, see for yourself:

The original post has been updated. I've included a short list with the most popular, simple and sensical items (though not always all 3...). I'll ask Adam to forward this thread to Pentax. Falc, feel free to do the same : )

This doesn't mean this thread ends here. But I won't be updating the first from now on. Still, you can still post suggestions since Pentax might be looking beyond the first page!

EDIT: Adam will send the e-mail on monday, so that gives us 2 more days of submissions to be included on the first page : )

The Short List - Limited to suggestions that are simple, popular and ideally both. Complete List below.

RAW
- 12bit RAW setting
- True RAW histogram

Movie Mode
- 1080p 24fps, 720p 24fps and 60fps
- AF during movie capture
- More manual control (ISO, shutter speed, sound options)
- Improved sound quality

Flash
- HSS Flash ability
- Allow full P-TTL with manual lenses by firing the metering flash after the lens was stop-down (it works with m42s!).
- second curtain synch with manual lenses
- Ability to do trailing curtain sync with any flash / wireless trigger.

Buttons
- Addition of SR on/off option to Fx button functionality.
- Addition of HDR Capture option to Fx button functionality.
- Addition of turn on/off catch in focus to Fx button functionality.
- When viewing images, the Fx button or green button temporarily shows dark/bright areas or histogram.
- Ability to assign the green button/fx button/preview dial to instantly record a movie.
- Top screen illumination activated by pressing the exposure compensation button (as on the K10D).
- In playback mode, holding the Exp.Comp. button shows detailed image information and a histogram.

Auto-Focus
- Allow Catch-In-Focus with all AF lenses when in MF mode by pressing the AF button (unused in MF)
- Option to enable that, in SEL AF mode, the four-way controller reverts to focus point selection on shutter half-press.
- AF-SR priority. Just like AF-S with focus priority, but only shoot when the shaking has reached a level where the camera thinks it can handle it.
- Add a new option to C14 : Superimpose AF Area: 1. On; 2. Off; 3. On selection only.
- Wider range of AF adjustment.

Menu's and the like
- Ability to save an initial setting for User modes. Eg: If the mode is Tv, an initial shutter speed can be saved.
- USER menu where one can assign frequently used menu items.
- Option to enable autorotation during playback (that is seperated from the option to record rotation data).
- Ability for the camera to count past 9999.
- An option to let the user pick 2 or 3 things that could be added to the Control panel.

Shooting options
- Option to set Continuous Shooting Lo speed
- Larger bracketing interval, ideally 9 shots instead of five
- Mirror lock-up for bracketing shots.
- Display a timer on the top LCD during Bulb mode
- Remove 30s limit in modes other than Bulb mode
- For manual lenses, use the focal length value for auto-iso handling.
- More then 999 interval shots.

Other
- Tethering.
- Add an option to turn raw-level NR off or, make it kick in at a configurable ISO level.

Original Post
With the K-5 Pentax has shown to listen to their users. So let's help them by making a list of suggested firmware updates. Hopefully we'll be getting at least one more update beyond the one that's going to released soon.

I personally have 3 things I wish my K-5 could do:

- Option to set Continuous Shooting Lo (to, for example, 4fps)
- When reviewing images, the RAW/Fx button or green button temporarily shows dark/bright areas or histogram.
- Top screen illumination activated by pressing the exposure compensation button (as on the K10D)

Please suggest your own, but keep it limited to things that are actually firmware related. If possible I will update this post with a complete list of suggestions.

The Complete List

RAW
- Ability to save a RAW file with less MP
- 12bit RAW setting (3x)
- true RAW histogram (4x)
- HDR images saved as RAW or TIFF (2x)

Flash
- HSS Flash ability (4x)
- Allow full P-TTL with manual lenses by firing the metering flash after the lens was stop-down (it works with m42s!). (2x)
- second curtain synch with manual lenses (2x)
- fine adjustment of synch time
- Ability to do trailing curtain sync with any flash / wireless trigger. (2x)
- Adapt the flash to the current ambient level in wireless controller mode.

Buttons
- Addition of SR on/off option to Fx button functionality. (6x)

You are always free to send to Pentax whatever you think makes sense. I'll probably run this thread until the upcoming firmware is out. Then I'll make a list of which things are both popular and sensible (taking your notes into account), and ask Adam to send it to Pentax.

QuoteQuote:

[*]12mbit RAW setting (2x)
+ for 12 Bit (what is 12mbit?)

A typo : )

QuoteQuote:

[*]Allow the movie mode in the USER menu
- (I see conflict with the above, you'll need the mode dial)

I don't see why there would be a conflict. You can map, say, Av to a USER mode, so why not movie mode?

QuoteQuote:

[*]Mirror lock-up separated from the 2 sec. timer
- already there on hardware supporting this

Could you elaborate? If this already exists then there is no reason for it be on this list.

QuoteQuote:

and my own wish:
  • Real focus bracketing
    - NM

  • Automatic selection of the sharpest shot from a burst or series
    - NM

  • Numeric/visual live display of a contrast value for a focus region in LV
    - NM

I did not add these, as by your own admission you think they are not viable.

When you're reviewing images and zoom out to the overview page (where you can see 9 photos at the same time), when you press Fn, you can choose a different lay-out (2x2, 3x3 or 4x4). I never knew this! I just accidently pressed the Fn button and saw a menu pop up I had never seen before :D

Not necessarily so. I would guess the market for these kind of cameras is rather small. It could be interest in Japan has slowed down considerably, thus freeing up cameras to be shipped to other countries.

It appears Pentax got lazy and photoshopped old K-7 photos to look like K-5 photos. I would call bullshit, but the same bad photoshop also appeared on a ad on a taxi, so who knows.

Compare the following pictures that leaked today, and the ones that came out of the K-7 presskit. The mode-button is different, but all the other buttons are in the same setting, and all the shadows and highlights are the same.

Do I really have to go WR?

I recently bought a DA18-55WR to team up with my K10D as a weatherproof set, and I love it. The lens isn't very expensive (compared to other lenses), and it's weatherproof, so you get 2 kinds of piece of mind. Nothing will happen to it, and if something happens, it wasn't very expensive to begin with.

I recently took it on a long trip through the Philippines and southern China, and I'm very glad I did. I got some great shots with it, that I otherwise could or would not have taken because of the rain or bad weather (or my anticipation of it). As a Philipino I'm sure you know it can rain quite badly sometimes :D

Though it can't really be pushed to its extremes, the lens is capable of very decent Image Quality. I often mistake one of my photos as taken by one of my limiteds, while actually it was the DA18-55WR :D

The fruits of a month in the Philippines. For those familiar with the country, the route was: Manila - Palawan - Panay - Tablas - Romblon - Sibuyan - Tagaytay - Manila.

Pentax K10D
DA15mm (saw the most use by far - awesome lens)
DA18-55mm WR (very, very useful when it rains - and it rains a lot in the philippines)
I also had the A28mmf2.8, A50mmf1.7 and DA35mmf2.8 with me, but I seldomly used them.

When 50mm is too cramped, going all the way to 10-17/20mm is quite a big jump. Framing with such a wide lens is very difficult, keep that in mind.

Pentax Lens Survey: The Results
Posted By kevinschoenmakers
Replies: 82
The results are in! I would like to thank Adam for helping me with processing all the data (and bringing the survey to everyone's attention in the first place) and Dan (audiobomber) for cleaning up my English. In a little over a week we received no less than 1661 responses. All of the respondents combined own 5281 currently sold Pentax lenses (an average of 3.2 lenses per person), of which 2375 are primes (45%), and 2906 are zooms (55%).

As with every first generation photography product, this survey is far from perfect. However, we still have a good foundation upon which to make some reasonable conclusions, so let’s have a look…

Bodies

BodyTotal Owners%K10D55934%K20D52832%K-738923%K-x21813%K200D17511%K100D1348%* ist DS1167%K100D Super915%* ist D805%K-m503%* ist DL473%No Digital Body241%* ist DS2141%K110D121%* ist DL270%

Over a third of you still own a K10D (or two, or three), which puts it right at the top of this list. However, of the 559 K10D owners, 224 also own a newer body (K20D, K-7 or K-x), so it isn't likely to be the most utilized camera. If we look at the K20D, number two on the list at 528, we see that only 71 people also own a more advanced body (this time only counting the K-7).

On the topic of K10D vs. K20D, there is one more curious fact to report. In the beginning of the survey, the K20D was ahead of the K10D, until we reached about a thousand respondents, and the K10D overtook its younger brother. This tells us one or two things. Possibly K10D owners frequent the internet less often, and/or, since this survey went online on a Friday, they were actually doing something other than sitting behind a computer all weekend.

We can conclude from these results that we did not get a "true" slice of all Pentax owners. Surely with the high sales it has been showing ever since its release, the K-x should be better represented. But, as one may expect, soccer moms and colorful Japanese schoolgirls aren’t very keen on filling out online surveys about camera lenses. Most entry-level bodies are probably underrepresented in this survey, as are probably the budget lenses such as the DA18-55 and DA50-200.

One last item: When we look at the camera listings, one thing seems odd. The enthusiast bodies (K10D, K20D and the K-7) are ranked from oldest to newest. However, the four most commonly owned entry-level bodies (K-x, K200D, K100D and * ist DS) are ranked from newest to oldest. Do owners of entry-level bodies lose interest in their hobby faster?

Lenses

Now, over to the bulk of the survey: Lenses. We’ll start with current lenses, and we’ll start with lens ownership.

Which lenses are owned the by the most people?

LensTotal Ownership%DA 18-55mm67841%FA 50mm50931%DA* 50-135mm29418%DA 55-300mm26616%DA 50-200mm26316%DA* 16-50mm25715%DA 16-45mm24515%DA 40mm Limited24014%DA 18-55mm WR23214%FA 77mm Limited23114%DA 21mm Limited19712%FA 31mm Limited19011%DA 10-17mm Fisheye18511%DA 12-24mm18111%DA 35mm Macro Limited17110%FA 43mm Limited16610%DA 70mm Limited16410%DA 18-250mm1247%DA* 300mm986%DA 15mm Limited966%DFA 100mm Macro WR825%DA 14mm704%DA* 60-250mm644%DA 50-200mm WR594%DA 17-70mm583%DA* 200mm573%DFA 50mm Macro523%DA* 55mm523%

Unsurprisingly, the DA18-55 tops this list. The FA50 is no surprise either. The DA*50-135, however, might not be so easily predicted. It’s not a cheap lens and suffers from SDM’s spotty reputation, but its high quality convinces people to buy it anyway. Then come a whole bunch of zooms, followed by the inexpensive, small, cheerful and optically impressive DA40.

We then stumble upon the DA18-55 WR. As it is the K-7 kitlens, it’s hardly surprising to see it relatively high on our list. However, this lens is interesting in another way. Together with the DA50-200 WR they are the only two affordable weather resistant lenses in the Pentax line-up. The question arises, how many people who do not own a K-7 bought these lenses? Well, quite a few. Out of the 232 people who own DA18-55 WR, 93 do not have a K-7 (40%). For the DA50-200 WR, the numbers are 40 out of 59 (68%). These numbers are quite substantial, especially when we consider their pedestrian optical quality in comparison to other Pentax lenses. Apparently there are quite a few people interested in cheaper-than-DA* weather resistant lenses. What's more, when we checked the numbers for people who own a WR resistant body but who do not own a WR or DA* lens, we discovered that full on 50% of all the respondents fall into this category (829 out of 1661). Certainly not everyone in this group will be interested in paying a premium for a WR lens, but I'm sure you will all understand what an untapped potential this is. We’ll come back to the topic of WR when we get to the future lenses.

At the bottom end of the chart, the DA*55 is showing a dismal performance. It is a fine piece of glass, and as we’ll see next this lens is wishlisted quite a lot. Must be the price, then.

Even though the DA17-70 gets good reviews, it scores significantly lower than all the other normal zooms when it comes to ownership. Apparently its characteristics do not make it more desirable than its competitors, although again, we will see it is wishlisted relatively often.

One thing that is immediately apparent is that primes score way, way higher on this list than zooms. The FA31mm is widely regarded as a stellar lens, and it shows. Perhaps surprising is the popularity of the DFA100mm Macro WR. I’m not sure what to attribute this to. It could be WR, it could be the great build and optical quality. Actually, what’s not to like?

Long glass seems to be longed for (I actually wrote it like that by accident, honest!) quite a lot as well. All of the long DA* glass is high on this list, as well as Pentax’s longest zoom, the DA 55-300 (high in comparison to other zooms of similar quality).

The DFA 50mm Macro looks like a real dud here. Not only do very few people own it, relatively few people even want to. My guess is the competition from the DA35mm Macro Limited is doing this lens no favors.

The numbers in the table represent the percentage of owners who named a particular lens as their favorite. The * next to the numbers mean the sample for this lens was less than 100 (IE: less than 100 people own this lens). Some people named no lens as their favorite (they either forgot or have another lens that is their favorite), and some people named multiple lenses (which is a flaw in the survey, but shouldn’t hurt the final outcome much).

What becomes apparent at once is that buying a Limited or a DA* means you’ll most likely enjoy it. The string of these lenses at the top of this survey is only broken by the DFA 100mm Macro WR, which Pentax might as well have called Limited, because it surely looks like one.

Pentax’s latest Limited, the DA15mm, ranks surprisingly low, as does the DA21mm, which did quite well in our ownership statistics. Perhaps wide-angle lenses in general are loved by few people. All lenses that fall in this category score relatively poorly.

Perhaps surprisingly, the DA*55 and DA17-70 both score quite high in this category (although the sample for both lenses is on the small side). Apparently most of us don’t know what we’re missing out on. I’m also a bit surprised the 18-250mm sits high on this list. Perhaps people who own this lens own relatively few other lenses, or maybe it’s just very good at what it does.

On the bottom of this chart we find all four of the kitlenses, as well as the DFA50mm Macro, which isn’t doing well in any category.

The above percentages are obtained by looking at how many of all current and former owners of a particular lens have sold or plan to sell this lens. One cannot draw hard conclusions from these numbers as to why they were sold, so make of them what you will. An * once again denotes that the sample for this lens was less than 100.

Some lenses, such as the DFA50mm Macro and the DA14mm, don't do too well in any category. And once more, they fair poorly. On the other end of the list, the 'usual suspects' FA31mm and FA77mm Limiteds are held on to dearly. The DA55-300mm does not end up on the marketplace often either.

This category used to be titled 'which lenses do not satisfy', and the calculations were slighty different. However, this drew some valid criticism and I decided to re-do this category so its conclusions were founded on solid numbers. If a survey such as this one will ever be held again, I hope the options given will more clearly represent satisfaction, because this is certainly a hot topic!

Which lenses need an upgrade?

Of all the people who took part in the survey, 16% said they would buy an upgraded DA* 16-50. The survey should have been clearer, but for this lens it’s safe to assume we’re talking about the SDM issues here. For most other lenses, sadly, the question arises: What should be updated? The DA17-70 has SDM, so that may be the problem. The DA12-24, however, poses a question. Perhaps people would like to see it with WR, or maybe something else. I’m sorry the survey wasn’t more specific in this regard. (However, looking at the future lenses part of the survey gives us a good clue for the DA12-24.)

The good news is most lenses apparently don’t need an update. The list quickly dips below 10%, at which level it is questionable whether an update would be profitable for Pentax. At the bottom end of the list are lenses people think are perfect in every way and lenses people apparently just don’t care about. I think by know you will know which lens falls into which category.

Which lens suffers most from older equivalent Pentax lenses?

I’m sure most (if not all) Pentaxians love that they can mount pretty much any Pentax lens on their modern body. But how much is this hurting sales of modern lenses?

The list has few (if any) surprises. Seeing as eBay is awash with old 50mm lenses, both the FA50 and DA*55 top the list. Cheap normal zooms, macro and telelenses also score relatively high. Wide-angle and mega-zooms score low, because they simply didn't exist until some years ago (old wide-angle lenses aren't very wide on APS-C).

Some Pentax lenses are relatively often foregone in favor of a Sigma or Tamron alternative. In the case of the DFA 100mm Macro, I think the highly regarded Tamron 90mm Macro is to blame. For the DA12-24 we should point our fingers at Sigma’s offerings and the cheap 70-300 zooms probably spoil it for the DA55-300.

All the Limiteds are at the bottom. Obviously, as we all know, because there simply ARE no equivalents.

If we were to conclude one thing from this part of the survey, it is that photography enthusiasts like to muse over new lenses. Even the DA 100-300mmf4-5.6, which was a mistake, gets the support of 36% of you. This should have actually been a 100-400mm lens. I would suggest those 263 people who are eagerly awaiting this lens order a DA55-300mmf4-5.8 ;).

In any case these numbers will surely not represent the sales figures would these lenses actually become a reality. They do however give a good look at which gaps in the lens line-up Pentaxians think should most urgently be filled.
The gap that apparently has to be filled quickest is at 85mm. Over two-thirds of you want this lens, nearly half of you (43%) very much so.

The second lens is the long-expected-but-never-materialized Pentax variant of the Tokina 11-16f2.8. After that comes another missing link, the 135mm - which is equivalent to 200mm on a fullframe, a common lens in many bags. The next one, at 400mm, can, I think, best be understood as ‘any lens longer than 300mm’, for which there is considerable demand.

The gap I would personally like to see filled most of all is between the DA21mm and the FA31mm. The DA24 and DA28 options both scored above average. However, when we look at them both, 641 people were very interested in either a DA24, a DA28, or both. So that puts interest in ‘a lens between 21mm and 31mm’ quite high on the list.

Interest in the WR lenses is, considering that they are special versions, quite high. Over half of the people would like a WR version of the DA12-24 (although I wonder whether all these people would still be as interested once they see the price tag). The 55-300 WR and 17-70 WR also recieve the support of as-near-as-makes-no-difference half of you. Even the 10-17mm Fisheye is met with enthusiasm, considering that such a lens has a rather limited public.

Another gap is a faster normal for APS-C, at about 35mm. Nikon has a very successful plastic-fantastic lens at this focal length, whereas Pentax makes do with a relatively slow macro. Interest in either the DA 35mmf2 or the DAL35mmf2 combined is, again, quite high: 599 people said they are very interested in either or both of these lenses.

The 50mm segment is a tough one. For Pentax it is a crowded place. There are vast amounts of older 50s, the FA50mm (owned by 31% of respondents) and the DA*55mm. One would think Pentax has this focal range covered pretty well. However, Canon, Nikon and Sony all offer cheap, no frills AF 50mm lenses for about €/$100. I would argue Pentax needs a cheap lens in this category. The lack of such a lens is an reason not to buy a Pentax camera. With the big three, you can get a fast and cheap auto-focus lens, whereas for Pentax, you can’t. If Pentax had such a lens, it could potentially introduce many photographers on a budget (all those people who bought K-x’s, for example) to prime lenses, which is a Pentax cash crop. Demand for such a lens might not seem very high compared to some of the other options, but considering this is a focal length many people already own, demand is huge. Moreover, such a lens would be aimed at people who are underrepresented in this survey: people on a tight budget.

At the very bottom we find the DA100-300mm, the error we already discussed, and the 18-105mm. The latter gets little love, but it would be a lens aimed at people on a shoestring budget, who again, are underrepresented in this survey.

Recommendations for future surveys

For future reference, the following list of answers will probably produce better results:

• Yes, I own this lens; I'm satisfied with this lens/I would recommend it.
• Yes, I own this lens, but I'm not satisfied with this lens/I wouldn't recommend it.
• Yes, I own this lens; this is my favorite lens.
• No, I don't own this lens; I sold it because I didn't like it.
• No, I don't own this lens; I sold it for another reason.
• No, I don't own this lens; I do not plan to buy it because I own or would rather buy a third-party equivalent of this lens.
• No, I don't own this lens; I do not plan to buy it because I own or would rather buy an older Pentax equivalent of this lens.
• No, I don't own this lens; I do not plan to buy it because I don't like its focal length.
• No, I don't own this lens; I do not plan to buy it for another reason.
• No, I don't own this lens, but I will probably own this lens within a year.
• No, I don't own this lens, but it's on my wishlist.
• I don't know/care.

Whether a lens needs an update or not is probably best asked in a separate question, since people who select one of the above answers could also be of the opinion that a lens needs an update.

People on a budget doens't mean people who are poor. Look at it like this. You're new to photography. With Pentax that means you've got a K-x and probably the DAL18-55 and the DAL50-200. You kind of like it, but you're not sure you want to spend all your hard earned money on this new hobby just yet. You see that, next to the cheap kitlenses, there's one other lens that's not really that expensive. You decide to buy it because people on the internet say it's a lot better than the lenses you already own, and, again, it doesn't cost all that much. You find out the pictures you make with that lens are far, far better looking than the ones you made with the cheap zooms. You get DOF control, great resolution, the lot. Now I might be interested in sinking 500 dollars into an even superior limited prime, otherwise, I don't think I would be quite so willing to invest that much into something I'm not sure I'll enjoy.

Also, imagine Pentax with only expensive gear. Where are the new Pentax users going to come from? People changing brand are just a trickle. Pentax needs to be interesting for people who are new to serious cameras. Young people who haven't got a lot to spend, and people who don't quite know for sure they wish to spend a lot of money on camera equipment.

Suggestion: Great Big Pentax Lens Survey

I just came across this article on the ByThom website, and I think something similar would be very interesting for the Pentax community as well. It would provide us (and potentially even Pentax) with an interesting and vast amount of data about which lenses are popular, in need of an update, longed for, and so forth.

The survey would be a long list of lenses (perhaps just one entry for the K, M, A versions) with for each lens a multitude of choices:
  • I own this lens

  • I own this lens but want to sell it

  • I used to own this lens but I didn't like it

  • I own this lens; if this lens were upgraded/if there was a modern version of this lens I'd buy it (for example: A28mm2.8)

  • I don't own this lens, I have no interest for it

  • I don't own this lens, I have no interest for it because I own a third-party equivalent of this lens

  • I don't own this lens, I might buy this lens

  • I don't own this lens, I plan to buy this lens

  • I don't own this lens, I'd consider buying it if it were upgraded/if there was a modern version of this lens (for example: DA*16-50)

  • etc.

Then, in addition, we could have a list of potential new lenses, and how people would respond to these lenses if they were to become real (for example: DA28mm, DA17-70WR, DA100-400mm, DA135mm, etc.).

With a little effort we could amass a treasure of information. With Pentaxforums involved, its members spreading the word to other forums, and some people volunteering to work out the logistics and processing, this could be a great success.

I'm up for it.

These pictures aren't really recent, since they were all taken last year. However, I recently downloaded (legally, mind you) Lightroom and I can finally do some proper PP, which really made these photo's alot better - I think. And since I've never posted thise pictures here before, I thought it would be worth it. Like my other recent posts, I went for a wide aspect ratio, I hope you like it.

Visiting North Korea is an amazing experience, and also very ambiguous. It's probably one of the most interesting places you can visit, but also the country with the most brutal government. As a group of tourists you have 2 guides with you at all times, except when you're in your hotel. Our guides were the kindest people you'll ever meet, and we could discuss pretty much anything. They were intelligent and well aware of the obviously shitty state the country is in, but blame anything but their leaders. As for taking pictures, they told us when and where we could and could not. They did not allow us to take pictures of anything that would make North Korea look bad. As such, the following pictures should not be taken as an accurate depiction of the country as a whole.

The rules of this game are simple. You post a picture (just one), and alongside it you give at least one positive remark about the picture of the person before you, and at least one negatitive remark. This is a surefire way to get your photo critiqued, makes you look at other people's photos critically, and is just fun.

Mods: I know this is a game, but I think there are valid reasons why this thread should be in this category.

So, for instance, someone posts a gorgeous landscape photo, but the horizon's off. My post is:

+ Great light
+ Nice composition
- Horizon's off to the left

You're hilarious. It took some sales guy something like an hour to sign this deal with that recordlabel. I don't think it involved any people who would otherwise be designing a 500mm lens. This is just a marketing thing that looks weird to our western eyes, but will be craved by enough Japanese to make it sell. If you're really that concerned about how this colourscheme will reflect on the fact that you have a camera by the same brand, you should perhaps start looking for another way to enlarge your manlyhood.
