With the 5,000 owner bumps my comment will likely go unseen but in case someone has the patience to read to the bottom i have a suggestion and opportunity for anyone interested in expanding their horizon. The K-01 is a straight-forward infrared conversion for a professional (remove the IR cut off filter and replace with a visible light cutoff at your choice of wavelengths). I know, i have a yellow brick that i had professionally converted after finding out the difficulty in converting any of my other dozen cameras. Other than experimenting to get a favorite lens that has minimal "hot spot" (i found the original DA21mm to be gorgeous) and understanding how to post-process IR shots, its an inexpensive way to expand your creativity with IR in either monochrome or false color. I can provide a more information for anyone interested.

Just my recommendation for someone looking for a new way to shoot. samples...false color is from a script in CS6 that swaps the blue for red channel since the a little visible light is purposefully allowed as my choice of cut filters. But i can screw on an 800nm filter and go totally monochrome.

So dont think of the K-01 as an old mirrorless, consider it as an inexpensive entry to the world of IR photography. and no...i neither know the seller or have any interest in his sale.

At 45deg up or down mine does not creep. Only if i point it straight down will it move. Does not creep pointed straight up and i have yet to need to shoot straight down or up so I am satisfied.

D-BG5 battery grip - how strong is the tripod mount?

Adding an option here but I may be the only one that uses it.

As a long time BR and grip user, I too was concerned when attaching any lens large enough to have its own tripod foot. So for the da*300 glass and up, I added a second sliding connector to the BR strap and connect to the lens foot also. The dual connection does not impair using the camera but leaves me feeling more confident as I bounce around the landscape.

Given the Sigma is 50% heavier and more front heavy, yes I find the Sigma requires a monopod whereas I can snap off a few shots with the D FA zoom no problem. Just me to some extent. Stronger folks might not have the same result. But weaker ones wont either.

---------- Post added 05-08-15 at 12:56 PM ----------

Based on only a single day of comparing the combinations, right now I have to rate the D FA zoom below both the Sigma 500 and da*300 but above the da*300+TC. No surprises there really. Quality zoom versus quality primes.

---------- Post added 05-08-15 at 01:03 PM ----------

Sorry, missed the first question, even if its just rhetorical. Yes, I have posted better shots in the past but those were typically processed in post for clarity and sharpness. I will continue to compare the 300+tc combo to the zoom since I can carry only one on excursions around the lake and the prime is a good bit easier to carry.

I can only wonder how much smaller/lighter the D FA would be if were an AP-C instead.

Another note for those who hate zoom creep.....this one has a lock for good reason, my copy creeps with each footstep.

I do mostly birding so Tav is my normal tele mode. Today I hope to compare AFC mode and speed between the da*300 and the spiffy new FA150-450 @300mm. If anything jumps out I will update this thread tonight.

---------- Post added 05-08-15 at 11:23 AM ----------

Yes, all of the shots with a TC were obviously lower IQ than without. I have no doubt there. If the samples did not demonstrate that well enough that's the fault of the poster....me. I use a TC on my best primes with great results in the past (da*300, A*400/2.8 and Sigma 500/4.5) but never found a zoom that could keep up.

---------- Post added 05-08-15 at 11:29 AM ----------

Folks - a note about comparisons here;

Downsizing a 13MB pic to 140KB really takes a toll on the fine detail. I have no doubt that the Sigma 500 shoots sharper, better detail on a birds feathers than the DFA150-450 @450 on its best day. I can provide a dropbox link to fullsized samples to anyone who PMs me an email addy.

But the 150-450 is a keeper for me. I can lug it and shoot handheld; not something the Sigma 500 can do.

Anybody wishing full-sized copies instead of these really compressed versions just send me a PM.

Damn, I apologize. didn't know the file names would not be visible. Suggestions on better way to do this welcome. Until then, the posted exif gives you the "code" in the form of the focal length.

Happy to move my thread over here to post some comparison pics.

Background; I shot fixed focus targets first and hated the results. No way I could make a buy decision from the charts so I dumped them and lined up my
- sigma 500/4.5,
- da*300 + HD 1.4x TC
- D FA150-450mm with and w/o the HD 1.4x TC

These pics were selected from about 100 as most representing how each of the above combos could shoot a blackbird. Tried to keep focus on the head while showing light on feathers for detail. Tripod mounts only, Tav mode at 500-800 to keep motion blur down, iso a little high due to shadows but the results fall in line. I have other subjects to post later with closeups and using the full 150-450 range. Hope this is helpful.

The Sigma 500 and da*300+TC were only shot at f8, the 150-450 was all f6.3 except for a single wide-open (f5.6) shot that I feel really demonstrates a strength of this lens; its sharp wide open at 450mm.

Pics are jpg, totally unprocessed except for the pixel-peeping 100% crops. Most all jpg options were turned off (lens correction, AWB, SR).

NOTE; pic names indicate as follows...420xxxx is the da*300+1.4x TC, 450xxxx is the D FA150-450 at 450mm, 500xxxx is the Sigma 500/4.5 and 640xxxx is the D FA glass with the HD 1.4x TC (it focuses quite smoothly as a comb although the IQ suffers). Second post will include remainder of the blackbird batch.

What test shots to post from my D FA 150-450mm?

Yes, AF with the ND1.4x TC is smooth and consistant. I just tried some shots with the TC of blackbird against shadows of forest. No problem. Will post a sample shot of that with the rest in a few minutes.

Per JPZK request all my pics will be posted here:

Thanks again for the ideas. I did list all the items suggested including my own and plan to try all. I now have a hundred or so similar shots comparing the D FA150-450mm, Sigma 500/4.5, and my fav DA*300/4 plus the HD 1.4x TC. As soon as I can match up similar shots I will post these first samples, all made on a tripod. By using a couple of common lenses, more folks can get a feel where the new glass stands. I shot a focus target with all 3 and found the results totally inconclusive. I will do that again with a different chart that can actually show the differences.

In short, I find the new glass hand holdable although its the thickest I have ever tried to grip when mounting. Mechanical performance is sweet; focus and zoom are both smooth, I like it better than the sigma 150-500 or 50-500....both I have used. Good news I think the samples will show its acceptably sharp wide open; you only need to stop down for depth of focus. I think it beats the da*300+ HD 1.4x TC but seems a notch down from prime Sigma 500/4.5. Proof to follow....

Thanks for the additional ideas. I have official focus targets and a Pentax HD 1.4x TC to throw in the mix as suggested. So far most everything sounds doable on Thursday weather permitting. Still hoping I will be able to handhold this 4.5lb monster when needed. Obviously Thursday will be mostly tripod work unless the Ospreys come by holding dinner.

The spiffy new lens arrives Thursday at 11am. Of course I will spend the day just taking test shots. I might as well post test shots that others would like to see before they consider purchase. So what would you like? Some obvious are minimum distance, various aperture, bokeh, sharpness (I like bird feathers), flare and focusing speed (subjective). I am unable to write an actual mini review but posting specific test shots and their parameters is doable. Help me make a list for the day and I will post the results plus any other subjective comments requested.

thanks, lee

Interesting...after the 1.20 update my k-3 LCD turns OFF when I touch the shutter to focus, just like my k-5's do.
If I missed something here pls kick me.

LCD comes on with power on.
LCD goes/stays off while touching the shutter
LCD goes off with Auto Power Off timer then back on if shutter touched and released.

Absolutely! I have rented the sigma 150-500 twice and the 50-500 once, trying to love them at max or near max range. Love never blossomed due to diminished IQ near 500mm. Yes, I know a lot of folks love these items and I say more power to you. If the new pentax super zoom is hand holdable and has IQ better than the sigmas at 450mm then I will stand in line to buy one. Waiting for the opportunity to hold one or at least read a hands on review.

I strongly believe Adam should be the first customer in prep for his FF later.

Well now......I just learned something disturbing. Have used a tammy 70-200mm/f2.8 LD Di SP for 5 years as my SHARPEST zoom. But I just tried to mount it on the k-5iis and use Live View. Total fail, all pics very OOF. Still great in phase detect but something I cant explain makes the lens worthless for LV. Just adding another data point here.

That is great detail and depth for a single frame. I normally have to stack a dozen shots for something like that. Looks like the bee cooperated by aligning its body along the focus plane for you. Maybe you should sign that one up for additional photo shoots? :p Nice work!

You hit the nail on the head. I have tried that feature on my k-5, k-5iis and k-3 but found it pretty useless. I too am often using multi shots such as for BIFs and the focus-priority has never helped that I could tell. Certainly would love for someone to tell me if there is a way to make it behave as it sounds like a great feature...if it worked.

fwiw, I use the 360 occasionally on both those bodies and never noticed an exposure difference. However my usage could very well be quite different from yours as it typically for macro or a fill when shooting outside. Good luck tracking it down.

EDIT - reread you post and noticed the green mode. I have never used the flash in green mode.

Only if you buy one that fits in the hot shoe but its a fixed optic not connected electrically to the camera. In other words its useful for the prime lens but much less so for everything else. I use one mostly when making video.

Hey there, I have used the same flash for 4 years on a k-5. Not knowing what you consider acceptable and knowing that I couldn't spot a 2-stop problem if I fell over one, I just took two sample shots for you: one on black background, one on white background. No longer have a 200mm macro so used the D FA 100mm, f13, iso200, flash set on green (auto) with no adjustments. Handheld camera in AWB and AV mode with a -1/3 EV that I use on this body for all modes. Here are the untouched results. Hope they help with your decision.
