DA* 16-50 how to test quality

Well it is not nice to say it is my fault - that I somehow cannot operate the camera. Fact is that even at f2.8 the right side is more softer than the left. That is not ok. At least not for a lens that one pays up to 800 bucks for.

I mean the sigma 18-50 that has macro.

Hello Everyone,

what week. Some of you (like Ash) might already know that I got the 16-50mm now too. However the first one (9027713) didnt focus at all motor was broken. Returned it. The second one (9023188) was fast and smooth however this time the bottom of the the images were completely soft. Not good. Returned it. Now I got the third lens of this kind and I would kindly ask you guys to take a look at my samples that I took and uploaded. Again the right hand side of all images seems very soft. Too soft in my opinion but I wanted to get your opinion as well. Please take a look, you would really really help me in my descision if I should return this one as well.

Thank you,

Alex

I have tested the lens. I am dissapointed. It seems to me that not matter what f stop the right side is now decentered.

I put examples in a picasa album. Would kindly take a look and see what you think.

Hey Ash,

today I went to Adorama personally. I asked specifically how many of the 16-50mm they have in stock. I was told just one. strange because so many people said theat Adorama has never had problems returning or exchanging lenses. At any rate I got the "last copy". And told the sales person that I wanted a good copy. Apparently he played dumb and didnt know what I was talking about. I told him that a lot of people have severe problems with this lens etc. etc. Anyway I bought the lens. Serial number: "9027713" Went back home and plugged it onto my K20d. Then the shock. The motor wasnt working. I couldnt auto focus at all. I saw some movement in the display but not much. I manually focused andd played around a little and eventually gave up. Then after an hour I picked it up again and strangeley there was mor activitiy in the focusing display. I then pressed the AF button on the back of the camera, focused it manually once, let the button go and kaboom now the autofocus works perfectly. I have to get used to not hearing the jigsaw like focus annymore since it is dead silent but it works.

Because of all this I couldnt test the sharpness and the softness and all that but I ll do it tomorrow with a brick wall.

However I shot the same Image again that I did with the Sigma 18-50mm ex and I can tell you so far there is no comparisen. The lesne is 30 percent sharper in the middle, higher contrast. Its like putting on glasses when you know that your eyes are getting bad. Also the manual focus is very very good. Smooth and precise. However I will have to do more tests before I conclude. After all I dont want decentration again.

so long,

Alex

Wouldnt a newspaper, taped to my apartment wall do the same thing? And how far must I stand away from the brick wall?

Ok I am a total newbie with this lens business. But I want to purchase the 16-50mm and I was wondering what is the best way to test sharpness, distortion etc. I read somewhere that someone taped some sort of a grid on his wall and photographed it. But how do you guys do it?

thanks

Hey I am planing to buy the 16-50mm DA*. Now as far as I know that some people have had bad experiences with this lense i.e. bad copies. However I found thhis statement on amazon.com where one customer is reviewing this lens:

"
-"Famous urban Internet legend" QA issues: Are done and over with. Blast from the (2008) past. All current lenses in stock do not have any issues anymore (in case you heard). "

Would you guys agree with that statement? Is it true?

Pentax SMC DA* 16-50mm question

Ok but I really hate the fact that on the sigma you have to set it to f8 to get it sharp from corner to corner. I want the best possible option in terms of sharpness.

By the way what do you guys think of the 16-45mm from pentax. Not a star lense but it has a high rating?

Ok thank you so mucch so far. I decided to post two images on imagehost: please take a look at them in full resolution and tell me what you think . They are both around 800kb. The first on is 18mm, f5,6, 125th and although the sharpness decreases towards the edges I find that the left side is even more "un-sharp" than the right side. The other image is at 18mm, f13, 30th and please tell me what you think.

ImageShack -

And another test, again the left side looks awefully un sharp. When I swith to f8 in the second image its gets a little sharper but not as good as he right hand side

Pentax SMC DA* 16-50mm question

Hello,

I own a pentax k20d and I use a Sigma 18-50mm EX DC on it. This lense has always been great for my reportages. However today I took a picture of a building here in NY and for the first time i saw that at f2,8 the left side of the frame/lense is not sharp at all comapred to the right side. The effect decreases when I stop down but it never completely dissapeares. Now I wonder whether it is worth purchasing/exchanging my current lense for the Pentax SMC DA* 16-50mm. It is a little bit pricy but I want to get equal sharpness from corner to corner. What is your guys experience with this lense? Is it worth upgrading?

thanks
Alex

K20D Infrared RAW Settings

Hi I took some Infrared shots with the infrared settings enabled on k20d. I always shoot in RAW. Then when I import the image in lightroom, lightroom shows me the infrared image for a split second but then turnns it into color. When I try to open the file with photoshop its the same issue. I want my RAW files in Lightroom the way i shot them. Is there any way of getting back the infrared result

thanks
