Just buy one. Any one. Enjoy. After awhile, you will realize what you want that the first lens doesn't do. Then buy that one. Repeat. All choices are good.

Re-hashed shot I took about a year ago inside St. Paul's Cathedral in Mdina, Malta, it looks awesome in B&W, the colours really don't add anything to the actual structure.

I don't know if this came up, but I think step one is getting rid of pictures that don't deserve to be processed. I think getting good at tossing poor or even good, but uninteresting pictures is critical. I like some of the other stuff about keeping the steps to about 3-4 areas. There will be some great shots you can revisit later as you get more time.

Well I joined and introduced myself last week, so I suppose I should show you the sort of images I take.
These are of a model called Holly who I have worked with on a number of occasions: |

You should know, I did not want to buy another lens AT ALL!
It's not my fault, but when Norm Head started to post all these great shots taken with his SMC A 5.6/400 I had to buy myself a 400 mm lens as well...
I found this manual focus Sigma APO 5.6/400 at a really good price and could take it out for the first time for a few shots taken at a local game park.
With this one I am quite pleased, especially considering I had to focus manually: |

Wanderings: A Portfolio
Having just finished a major website revamp, a re-edit of many photos and a ground-up reselection of images I show, I thought I'd share a portfolio of images. These represent some of my own favourites I've pulled out from the ones that made the cut from the past 5-6 years in which I've been taking photographs.
Thanks for having a look.

This photo was taken back on Christmas Day last year. I used two lights, each being a $2.00 LED Flashlight I bought from a dollar store. I used a pile of christmas lights as some sort of background bokeh so it isn't just pitch black. The gummy bears were placed on hardwood that I polished up to be very reflective.
I look forward to hearing your opinions!

Went to a lovely little Japanese guest house on Bainbridge Island to shoot with Ashley. (I'm assuming these are demure enough to not qualify as nsfw.)

My copy of the Super 55mm is better than my copy of the SMC 55mm, and they both flare about the same. Better meaning better sharpness, and less green fringe around out of focus background highlights.
The SMC works better on film shooting b&w, seems to have a bit more inherent contrast. So, SMC on film for me, Super on digital.

Try DOFMaster. All your questions will be answered. :p Just for example, on a K20D, for a subject at 5 meters, a 55/1.8 (wide open) has 0.58 m DOF. A 105/2.8 at f/4 (focusing at same 5 m) has 0.25 m DOF. You can give this calculator any focal length, aperture, and focusing distance (and of course film or sensor size) and watch it calculate DOF. You'll find that at most distances, the 50/1.4 (wide open) and the 55/1.8 (wide open) will have rather similar DOF. --Dave |

Why is it useless at F4? Too dark for you to focus on the fly stopped down?
As far as filters go, I have a Cokin mount (for square filters) which attaches to the outer circumference of the lens via three turn screws, so it doesn't matter if the filter threads are damaged because it doesn't use them.
And that shot is freaking FANTASTIC, so from what I see, you don't have any problems at all!
