Hahahahhaa. This is hilarious. There is no such thing as "serious" HDR, it's a terrible gimmick that should have died out years ago.
Nikon has more affordable lenses, if you know where to look. My 35mm/1.8 prime was $160, and Pentax doesn't have anything modern or good in that price range. You're stuck with the 50/1.4 which costs twice as much. It's also easier to find deals on Nikon glass since there's just so much more of it than Pentax. Don't forget about the AF, which Pentax is just barely catching up on. The D7000 has a new AF system, which blows any Pentax out of the water.
Do ever want to try shooting tethered on Pentax? Too bad. Pentax stopped supporting it after the K20D.
Most importantly is the flash system. If you use flash, you're going to get a LOT more out of Nikon's CLS system than Pentax's wireless flash system which doesn't do nearly as much.
In reality, the D7000 outclasses the K-5 in anything that matters in a real-world setting. And it does it for $400 less. So the people saying that the Nikon glass is more expensive? The price difference in the cameras more than makes up for it.
Sure, Pentax used to be the best bang-for-the-buck, but they are NOT ready to go head to head with the big two. The K-7 was a great camera for its price (I got mine for $800), however, the K-5 doesn't compare to the cameras in its price range. Sure it has a pretty new sensor, but without the rest of the features to back it up, it'll fall short.
tl;dr: D7000 is better value for the money.

I'm switching to Nikon because I can't justify sticking with Pentax. They just don't have the options in glass the Big Two have. There's also Nikon's CLS, which blows Pentax's wireless P-TTL out of the water.
$1600 is just way too much for the K-5, especially when the D300s is only $100 more.
And it seems the only thing I'm losing in the D7000 is (questionable) ISO performance, and a PC sync port.
Pentax to me has always been about the dollar performance, but the way they priced the K-5 just makes me think they're getting inflated egos thinking they can compete with Nikon and Canon's similar offerings at that price.

I'm hoping to keep the camera and grip together, sorry. And it's a 3rd party D-BG4 so it should, but I have no idea since again, it is a third party and was made before the K-5 came out. I'll think about it though if I don't get any offers for both.

1. Pentax K7 Body and 3rd Party Grip SOLD
Camera has minimal wear, shutter count under 1000 (826 as of this posting). I bought it used, though it still comes with all accessories in their original bags, so I'm assuming it was a "wife didn't approve" return. The camera grip is an eBay 3rd party grip, but it works fine and has all the same features as the official Pentax one, except the weather sealing. Box included for the camera, not for the grip.
Also included is 3 batteries and an extra charger.

3. Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 SOLD
Another excellent lens, has been to Tamron for calibration and adjustment, so no focus issues. Not sure if anyone cares, but it is made in Japan, which is apparently good for this lens. I love this lens to death, and will probably buy the Nikon equivalent. Also a very rare lens for Pentax!

Start selling the DA pancakes in Nikon/Canon mounts. Odd? Probably, but they would sell like hotcakes and Hoya would have a lot more money for their Pentax division.

Just got my third party grip. A bit of taking used to, coming from the K200D which didnt have anything but shutter and AE-L on the grip, but it works perfectly so far.

The Kx is only meant to be an entry-level camera. I'd say wait a few months to see if Pentax comes out with something like the K-7 with the Kx's sensor.
Things the Kx lacks:
Top display
Ability to use battery grip
In-viewfinder AF points <- big one for me, why I just ordered a K7 over the K-x
Front e-dial (Also a big one)
Other buttons
The Kx just lacks a lot of things the K10 doesn't. Hell, it even lacks things my K200D doesn't.

I'm not saying they're immune, but it's very unlikely to happen.
No one on these forums has had a problem with a third party battery so far, so I figure that they must be built at least somewhat well.

When's the last time you heard of a DSLR catching on fire?
If there was a problem like this with the third party batteries, you KNOW it'd be posted here. I've yet to see any issues about it posted, and everyone here actually recommends the batteries.
edit: In fact, I could probably get a good insurance policy on my camera with the money saved on batteries, which would cover in the very small chance that something did go wrong.

You have to set your camera to AF-S to get it to use the spot beam, it doesn't work under Continuous.

What kind of light are you shooting in? Fluorescent lighting can cause banding in images over 1/60th of a second in shutter speed. The reason for this is that the kind of light isn't constant, it is actually a series of small pulses so only part of the sensor catches the light at one time.

I was thinking the same thing.
But hey, whatever you have to do to get the job. I'd rather have someone who can pull of stunning photos using only small hotshoe flashes than mediocre images using studio strobes. But then again, it can work in reverse.
Just don't act like it's impossible to produce good photos with hot shoe flashes.

Do you really think they'll know the difference? Which one do you think they'll tolerate more? The smug bastard who spends half an hour setting up his equipment using big heavy strobes, or the guy who can set up his hotshoe flashes in under a minute?
Really, stop being so smug about it, and acting like someone's presence is less professional just because they choose to use hot shoe flashes.
Really, to answer the question, use whatever you will feel most comfortable with. Clients will respect someone who knows his way in and out of hotshoe flashes than someone who struggles with studio strobes. So whatever you end up getting, practice, practice, practice.
And don't just choose one over the other because it's "more pro".

The DF-383 does not have P-TTL wireless.
The Pentax FGZ360 and FGZ540 do, along with third party flashes such as the Metz 48-AF1 and 58, and the Sigma EF-530 Super.
Check the link in this sticky for a better comparison.
(I own the Sigma EF-530 Super and I love it. Your mileage may vary)

Center-weighted metering is your problem here. It's not wanting that lampshade bright, it's wanting to turn it into an 18% grey. Turn that off and re-do the experiment.
The flash doesn't do center-weighted so it compensates for the whole scene, which is why it's nice and bright.
