This is the Aspherical APO lens. As far as I know Sigma only made one version of the 135-400mm. This lens has a 4.24 out of 5 rating at Photographyreview.com.

Anyone interested in the Sigma 135-400mm before I post on eBay? This is a really nice lens that produces great images (even at 400mm).

Poll: The "Should I Sell Up and Switch to Pentax?" thread

I see a lot of people switching from Canon to Pentax. But my question is what Canon body are you switching from? Mark I/II, 30D, 20D? Or the XTi?? My guess would be that the majority of these cases are switching from the XTi (or older). You pay even a higher premium for the good Pentax glass. Yes the Canon 70-200mm f/2.8 IS USM is $1600, but the Pentax 70-200mm/80-200mm f/2.8 is going for $2700. Now which one would you rather pay?

Funny. One sold on ebay last night for $2700 US (NIB). I wouldn't spend that much! You can get a 70-200mm IS USM brand new for $1000 cheaper!

First try with Raw...

Are your RAW shots in PEF or DNG? If they're in PEF, then unless you have Photoshop 7+ (I believe), you won't be able to open them. ACR 3.6 supports PEF files, but you have to have a version of photoshop that supports ACR 3.6. Instead of saving as a jpeg after you do your crop, save it as a tiff. Jpeg is a compressed format, and during the compression something has to "go" in order to get the best compression (usually it's your colors). Tiff however is an uncompressed file format that any image viewer can open. Save them as tiff (8 bit) then open and edit in photoshop.

I don't know if this is an option in the K100, but in the K10 in the menu (think it's under custom menu), there is an option to have your vertical images automatically rotated for you.

How much can I sell my Pentax system for?

You make some really good points here and I agree. The point of the $50k is; is it really worth passing up on really good money just because the lens you need to shoot the event either doesn't exist in Pentax mount or almost impossible to find. I see those lenses you listed above all the time, but in my case I need something like a 70-200 f/2.8, which like I stated, either doesn't exist in Pentax mount (which it does), or is almost impossible to find (which it is). My plan is not to switch, but if business dictates, then I will. The best thing about the K10 is that no matter what lens I use I have SR (like someone stated earlier). That is a HUGE plus in my book. Not to mention the fact that the FA 50mm/1.4 is a darn good lens and I love using it!! To me this lens is under priced at $200. It's worth every bit of $400.

Come on man let's be real and not biased. If the lenses were really that "crappy", they wouldn't be market leaders. They're market leaders for 2 reasons:

#1 the equipment is good
#2 the equipment is readily available

Right now Pentax only satisfies #1. Pentax (the company) does not pay my bills, and I have no loyalty to them or any other manufacturer. My only loyalty is to my profession (if you can call it that, or wanna call it that). People say that Pentax is crappy, WHO CARES! I know Pentax equipment is good cause I use it. So what they say means nothing to me. Pentaxians want to spend the money to get the equipment. The problem is the equipment is not there to get! If you were offered $50k to shoot "The Superbowl" but in order to get the kind of shots they wanted you to get you needed a 500mm f/2.8 lens, would you pass on the opportunity cause Pentax doesn't have one? Let me answer that for you....No! You would go and get the camera you needed to capture those shots. It's business...never personal!

I really believe that. I've had people tell me that my photos are really good, but I look at some of them and can't stand them. Maybe because of the angle I took, or I didn't get the DOF I was after. The best thing about non-photographers looking at your photos is that they don't know what the picture could/should look like....LOL

I wouldn't say AF speed isn't important (depends on what you're shooting). But being able for the AF to lock-on accurately is very important. The AF on my K10 isn't VERY fast, but when it acquires it's pretty much "dead on"!

Pentax still has a lot to do with it. Instead of making 1000 copies of a lens that is in high demand, flood the market with it. Thant's how the other companies do it, why shouldn't they? The more lenses available to sell, the more they will profit. Quit playing the "supply & demand" game. Satisfy your customers, give them what they want/need! That is why Canon & Nikon are so popular. Whatever a Canon/Nikon shooter needs, there is a store with it. At the moment I am literally rocking back & forth with the notion of buying a Canon/Nikon just cause my lens availability would be better. The only reason I haven't already is because I would take a nice hit just replacing the lenses I have now to cover the focal ranges that I use. Don't get me wrong, I love my K10D! It is a very nice camera and delivers awesome IQ. But Pentax just can't "supply" my demand for what I need. I shouldn't have to pay $2000 for a lens just because it's in short supply.

I use to shop at Nelson's about a year ago, but they NEVER had Pentax gear. I asked them if they would start carrying it at any time and they said no cause it wasn't a popular brand (not enough interest for them to carry). They had old manual lenses, but I don't have time to sit and fight with a manual lens while at a sporting event. Georges carries some stuff, but if you recall in my post I said "lens of my choice". They carry the "typical" lenses. I can't walk in there and walk out with a 18-50, 24-70, or 28-80 f/2.8 lens. But if I want Canon or Nikon, it's there. They rent all types of Canon & Nikon gear too, but no Pentax (at least not since the last time I checked).

I can totally understand his frustration in that matter. I live in San Diego California, and there is not one store here that I can walk in & walk out with the Pentax lens of my choice. But they have wall-to-wall lenses for Canon & Nikon. It sux having to wait for it to be ordered!!

As a sports shooter I can understand wanting 8fps. If he's not shooting sports then it's a definite overkill. But there is more to it than just 8fps. It's all about how many useable images you capture. Combine 8fps with the faster AF of USM, now we're talking business. Capturing 264 shots in 33 seconds means nothing if you only have 8 useable shots because your AF can't lock-on fast enough (or correctly). I do ok with the K10 and sports, but I also miss a lot cause the AF just isn't fast enough.

Just permission or waivers?

You really don't need a release form to take and/or publish a photo of someone. As long as the photo is not used commercially you're ok. Basically:

1. Almost anything you can see you can photograph.
If you can see it, you can take a picture of it. If you are standing on public property you can photograph anything you like, including private property. It is important to realize that taking a picture is different than publishing a photo, which leads to point number two.

2. As long as you are not invading someone’s privacy, you can publish their photo without permission.
You can take someone’s picture in any public setting and publish it without consequence (even if it portrays the person in a negative way) as long as the photo isn’t “highly offensive to a reasonable person” and “is not of legitimate concern to the public.” You can even publish photos if you took them on private property. While you may be punished for being on private property, there is no legal reason why you can’t publish the photo from prison!

3. As long as you aren’t using someone’s likeness for a purely commercial purpose, you have the right to publish the photo.
You can use your photos of other people without their permission for an artistic or news purpose, but you can’t use them for a commercial purpose (such as an ad). You could sell a photo of a person without their permission, but you couldn’t use the photo in an ad saying the person endorses your product.

Just to show I'm not making this up or simply stating my opinion:
