Close-up using the Olympus OM-D E-M1 and the Oly 60mm macro lens. I'll admit, using the evf for macros is a bit more challenging, but I'm getting pretty good results. The final images always look better than they do through the viewfinder.

My family, like many others, is addicted to electronic devices. Cell phones, pc's, tablets, etc.. Once they arrive for a holiday and after the initial meet and greet, they all ask for my wifi password. Their cell phones won't work here. After everyone has established connection, they turn into zombies. Eyes glazed over...texting and surfing. Facebook is more important than the physical family presence. This Thanksgiving was different. Due to a blown transformer, we had a two hour power outage Thanksgiving Eve. Normally I don't like power outages, but in this case, something odd happened. No power, no wifi, no lights. We had to make due. Candles were lit and real conversation ensued. It was a pleasant surprise like nothing I had experienced in awhile. My family and I talked without the aid of an electronic crutch. It didn't last, but for one brief moment, it put a smile on my face and was reminded what life used to be like.

Not my dog, but I love this story. A stray dog wandered into the Milwaukee Brewers training camp this spring. The team adopted him and named him Hank. He's turned into a celebrity. Go Hank!

Last week I took advantage of a sale that Pentax was doing thru their online store to purchase a new K30. It arrived yesterday. Very nice. Charged the battery last night. Tried it out for the first time today. For the life of me, I could not get it in focus in the viewfinder. This is important to me as I only use manual focus lenses. Live view was fine. I thought my eyes were going. I tried different lenses.....same result. I concluded that there was something wrong with this new camera. Packed it all up and was going to send it back to Pentax tomorrow. As I was eating lunch, the word "diopter" popped into my head. Could it be with all my fussing that it was something so simple as the diopter adjustment? No, couldn't be. I'm not that dumb. After all, this is my fifth Pentax dslr, so I should know what I'm doing. Well, turns out I am that dumb. I unpacked the camera again and took a look. Darned if that little slide lever wasn't pushed all the way to the right. A quick adjustment made to suit me and all is fine now. I can't help but think how stupid I would have felt had I sent it back for my own stupidity.

I'm changing my mind a little on focus peaking. When it comes to text, focus peaking tends to muddy things up a bit at the edges and you don't know for sure whether it's in sharp focus or not. I decided to turn it off and trust my eyes viewing that great lcd in the back. I think it works better for me. This is a crop at the box. f1.4. Another shot at f1.4. Neither are worhty, but tests only. This lens seems sharp to me. |

Yes, focus peaking works great. My general impression of this lens is that it is surprisingly well built. Focus ring is well dampened. It's heavier than I though it would be, but it's got fast glass so this is to be expected. Haven't had much chance to take many photos with it but what I have done is quite pleasing. A very nice lens and considering the price, it's a great lens.
