My four prime kit is either 15 - 31- 77 - 140 (100macro with 1.4) or 21-43-77-140. Both work well.

I had a similar experience. but the replacement lens is as good as any I have used in the past 40 years. Don't be discouraged, work with your vendor to get a good copy.

Received replacement 9028073.
This thing rocks. Now that I know what a good copy can do, a most impressive lens. As most have observed a bit soft wide open @ 16. but beyond that, having a tough time seeing a marked difference at 50 between this lens and my m50 1.7 at similar stops.

Marc, thanks for your thoughts.
When I speak of detail I am referring to the ability to do substantial cropping of an image. I have found that while a large image may be sharp the detailed components of the image are not clearly discernible when isolated. I do not always need to be in close proximity to the subject, in fact sometimes it is not possible. So I maybe confusing "detail" with sharpness.
Again thanks

Mark, would you change your recommendation if the parameter of shooting year round in the Pacific Northwest (read rain/snow conditions) was brought to the conversation?
I realize that compromise is always a factor in making a decision, but I maybe on a river, in the snow, at the coast, or tromping in the woods at any given time. So I may be looking for a "swiss army knife" solution where one does not exist.
I appreciate all of the input I have received and look forward to continued advice.

Thank you for your suggestions.
I was considering acquiring a DA*16-50 and a DA 55-300 and later trading up to a DA*60-250 or just a DA*60-250. I had not considered acquiring any primes but I am open to persuasion.
Please keep the suggestions coming.

All,
I am in a position to upgrade my kit that currently contains:
DA 18-55 II (decently sharp)
and from my film days
M 80-200 4.5 (a bit soft)
m 50 1.7 (base line for sharpness)
Quanatray 70-300 (decent in sweet spots)
Rikenon 55 1.4 (Sharp)
Rexatar 135 2.8 (a bit soft)
Meyer 50 1.8 (a bit soft)
I am leaning towards moving to lenses that have been developed for digital sensors.
I have a tendency to shoot close for details, using either proximity or focal length to achieve desired image. Subjects will vary, but are predominately wildlife, plant life etc under natural light conditions.
Considering the current Pentax line and a budget of about 1000.00, what would you suggest.
Your suggestions are appreciated.

To all,
Thank you for taking a moment to respond to my question. As I journey down the path of digital photography I will have to learn the nuances of the format while clinging to the lessons learned in the realm of 35mm. The vast knowledge available from the participants on this site will no doubt shorten my learning curve and will minimize the number of inevitable errors I will make.
I have tried both lenses and am looking forward to transferring my skill set from film to digital.

I have recently acquired a K20d with the 18-50 lens and now exploring the use of some older lenses. I found a M50 1.7 and have been enjoying the lens. I have a couple of old school lenses from my 35mm days and was wondering if I would have any issues using them on the K20 body.
Both are M42 thread, so I purchased the Pentax adapter. However both have a pin that protrudes from the back of the lens for aperture activation. I want to be assured that this configuration will not physically conflict with the camera body when the lens is used.
Rexatar Auto 135mm 2.8
Meyer Optik Oreston 50mm 1.8
I have read most of the posts concerning the use of older lenses and have not found a direct solution. Some information seems to indicate that the pin(s) need to be removed and or defeated. Other information seems to indicate one an mount the lens with no issues.
Any insights are appreciated
