Hey, Chuck, how long should it take for me to get a response to my pre-order email? I sent it a couple of days ago and haven't heard anything back yet.

Hate to bump this, but is there any word yet on whether this will work with a camera that was not purchased from B&H? I wanna get that Bower battery grip, but I can't swing it and a $100 extended warranty at the same time (V-Day's coming up, ya know).

Say, can I get this extended warranty from B&H for my K-5 if it was purchased from another retailer, or does it only apply to K-5's sold by B&H?

Am I not the only one who, upon looking at the picture of that special edition, thought the K-X assembly plant went completely f$%@$# bonkers one day and the Pentax higher-ups went "Eh, we'll say they're 'special editions' and get rid of 'em that way"?

The Fry's in Duluth GA has one out on display next to the K2000. It had the 18-55 DAL on it for some reason, but it still focused crazy-fast (well, in comparison to what my K20d does in similar light).

Eh, I rolled the dice & just placed the order thru Ebay. I'll post again after I get a bit of quality time with the Kata.

Yours. Kata just put out a $25 rebate form. Amazon's offering it for $125 shipped, but there's some on Ebay with BIN of $100 shipped, and with Live Cashback currently at 8% I could theoretically get the Kata for $67 final cost. However, the Ebay guy's return policy has contradictory terms (says 30dys, then 7days, then no returns on auctions, WTF?), while I've never had an issue with Amazon. So now I'm just trying to figure out whom to buy my next bag from. I'll probably go with Amazon, just to be on the safe side.

Pondering a sling bag...

I've been pondering getting a new bag for my gear, and I'm considering a sling bag, since there's been more than one occasion where I've been caught flat-footed with my K-20 in my current bag (a Canon 200EG I got on sale a while back), and of course the shot was gone by the time I fished the camera out. I'm also starting to get paranoid about the fact that my bag doesn't have a rain cover-the flaps over the zippers don't really seem to be worth much in that department. It's also slides about a bit when I'm carrying it (it's sternum strap doesn't help much either), which is getting to be annoying, especially as I typically wear the bag all day when I'm about taking pictures. I admittedly don't like spending money on something that isn't a lens or a camera body, but I think the time's come to bite the bullet and be done with it. I want one that'll hold my camera with my 70-200mm f2.8c mounted on it, so the bag will have to be large, and I'm currently considering these three:

Tamrac Velocity 10 Sling bag.
+It's the cheapest of the three
+It appears to have a mesh back.
-It doesn't have a rain cover, like the other two do
-The one shoulder strap could be problematic over an all-day tromp-about

Kata 3N1-30 Sling/Backpack (this one I'm currently leaning towards)
+It has a versatile strap system (I was thinking I could wear it with the straps crossed over my chest, and just pop off one strap to quickly sling it over when needed.
+Has a rain cover
-No mesh back, so I'll be sweating more under it
-Tripod attachment for the bag is extra (but the other two don't even have an option for tripods, so it's kinda moot)

LowePro Slingshot 350 AW
+Appears to be the largest of the three (ie, I can stuff more stuff into it)
+Has a mesh back and a raincover
-Has only the one shoulder strap
-Is the most expensive of the three.

And I almost forgot, this is what I'd like the bag to be able to carry:

Pentax K20d and two spare batteries for it
Sigma 70-200mm 2.8
Tamron 1.4X teleconverter
Pentax FA 50mm 1.4
Tamron 28-75mm 2.8
Sigma 17-70mm 2.8-4 (not an absolute necessity, but it would be nice to lug it along, as I don't have a true wide-angle lens that I like)
Pentax 540 flash (not an true necessity either, but I'd prefer to have it and not need it than yadda yadda.)
Memory card wallet
4 circular polarizers of various size (I use lens hoods, so stepping rings aren't any good to me)
Rainsleeve for the camera (my lenses aren't weatherproof), bulb blower, filter rings, and spare flash batteries.

I should add that I thought about a harness-type system instead, but I'm not too crazy about trying to carry a 70-200mm lens in a hip pouch or something, as I'm a klutz and could easily bang it against something-the bags would offer more protection from that.

Thanks in advance for any insights.

K-7, First DSLR w/ True Aperture Control with Video!

Well, that's plausible, but there's also the following to keep in mind:

-Canon has a huge interest in camcorders
-Panasonic, which is partners with Olympus in the 4/3rds thing, has a huge interest in camcorders (granted, Panasonic is coming out with a micro 4/3rds camera that'll do HD video, but it's price is pretty-high, so it wouldn't be a huge threat to its camcorder concerns)
-Nikon gets their imaging sensors from Sony, which has a huge interest in camcorders.

So all of the notable SLR players have a reason not to give us a SLR with un-nerfered video capability for a while or so, either to avoid fouling up another divisions' sales (like Canon), or annoying a hardware partner (like Nikon could with Sony).

Of course, there's also the "let's give them a reason to upgrade to the next model" logic, too.

I imagine to keep it crippled (at least) a little bit-Samsung does have a notable camcorder selection that I imagine they're not too keen on creating more competition for.

As soon as you attempt to open a RAW file in PS, it'll automatically open it in Camera Raw first. After you make your adjustments in Raw, click "Open Image" in the bottom-right to open it in PS.

You could try dodging the tree. I just happened to have my Elements 4 book next to my head.

1-Go to the Layers palette & select "new layer" from clicking on the (more) button

2-In the "new layer" dialog box, change the mode to Overlay, and then click on the check box next to "fill with overlay-neutral color (50% gray)". This'll create a new layer over the picture of Neutral gray color, but because of the mode selected, it won't actually turn your picture grayish.

3-Select the brush tool and set up the options for it so it's medium sized & soft-edged. Make the Opacity 30%.

4-In the colors box in the bottom of the toolkit, make sure the foreground color is white. Select the gray layer and start painting white over where ya want things to lighten up.

I hope I explained that right. Here's what I got after fooling with it fer a bit. I didn't dodge everything to make it more obvious.

From PS Elements 5 to 7 questions

It's not directly upgradable, if that's what yer trying to get at. What Adobe will do is knock $100 off the FULL price for someone with a copy of Elements (the installer program scans your computer for what's already on it)-which still makes it $600. If you're a student/teacher of or know a student/teacher with a .edu e-mail from an accredited institution, you could grab CS4 at the price of $200 or so. I got lucky last year and Adobe ran a Black Friday special where CS4 for Elements users was 1/2 off, and I found a coupon that brought it down to $270 (I also had some leftover cashback from a lens purchase that brought my final cost down to under $200). That deal died a long time ago, though. The only other way that I'm aware of to get a legitimate inexpensive copy of CS4 is to register certain types of Wacom tablets-their registration page links to a page in the Adobe store that gets ya CS4 for $300, last time I checked.

Well, I've used my Siggy 70-200mm with my Tamron 1.4TC and got smashing results. However, using the same lens with my Siggy 2X TC makes me want to smash something instead.

I did think of one other thing-Wacom has this deal where if you register one of the newer tablets, they'll then give ya a link direct to Adobe where you can get CS4 for $300. I think any tablet that's a Bamboo or above qualifies for the special pricing.

Are ya going to college or night school, or know someone who is? If so, you could grab one of the Student versions. Those are usually about $200 or so.

If you have Photoshop Elements 5 (I do), then that's all of Camera Raw that you're going to see. Those other tabs you're wondering about are advanced functions only available under the full versions of Photoshop CS3 and CS4 (I'm learning CS4, and it shows all those tabs).
