Just noisy. AFC was so unreliable on my K-5 that I rarely used it, and likely never with my FA77. The K-3iii is much much better but for moving objects where it kept changing to keep them in focus (birds) I simply wasn't used to the constant noise. I suspect I won't use AFC often with my screw-drive lenses. It worked fine. I just found it distracting.

The AF was pretty snappy on my FA77 but AFC was quite annoying.

Thanks. They appear and disappear quite quickly so you can't count on going back another day when you have more time.

A 90-minute one-way drive is nothing on the prairies. That gave them time to read the manual on the way. ;)
I thought it was a fair review. Just because it doesn't beat the D500 in ever category doesn't make it a bad camera. I've had mine 5 days now and compared to my K-5 (which I loved) it's an incredible leap forward. This camera was made for existing Pentax users and my advice would be that if if you swing it financially, buy it.

I love my DA* 50-135 and up until a week ago, it was often on my K-5. Never noticed a start-up issue but AF was often a challenge for anything that was moving. Got my K-3iii this week and was a bit nervous as to how the lens would stand up since it wasn't a PLM. Very happy so far.
I grabbed this shot this morning and forgot to change my autofocus zone so it was still on spot. Even so, it is still far better than I could have ever hoped for with my K-5 in a similar situation. The K-5 would have been searching and missed the shot entirely. I just wish I'd had the AF set to Auto, or better yet Live View with tracking. That would have been a good test. Overall, I'm very pleased with how well the SDM lens works with this camera.
(and yes, I did scare the crap out of that bird...) |

The six posts per day have been a challenge as I've often enjoyed reading the posts but never really thought I had much to contribute. My goal has been to at least provide meaningful posts, especially when commenting on photos, rather than simply saying "nice shot" six times. I think you might be onto something with an average. Maybe include in that a requirement to post a picture. It is a photography site afterall.

I like B&W but would have preferred more black and contrast in this one. Having said that, a bit of a vignette would give it a pin-hole camera look which could work well given the subject.

Had mine for a couple of days now. Still trying to figure out how best to customize it to suit me. One tip I picked up from PhotoUniverse was to re-program the 4-way controller. Go into Menu>C2>Fx Button. I re-programed the "right" button to be my "play" button which I find a little more intuitive than the dedicated one. Good luck.

The pricing of the K-3iii was just at the maximum of what I was prepared to spend to make the big leap from my ten year old K5. I can understand why some of you with multiple newer cameras may be hesitating, but for those of us who have to wait between upgrades, I just know I'm going to be quite pleased once it is finally shipped to me. Saving $200 would be nice, but I'm not going to wait a year to maybe get a price drop.
Scratch that - I just double-checked an my camera will only be 9 years old on Wednesday. (still not waiting another year though)

Those female Cardinals ae much more camera shy than the males. Hard to get them to stand still.

Just got mine yesterday and haven't had much time to play with it yet. The viewfinder is nice but I must say, compared to my K-5, the grip felt incredibly "perfect" the first time I picked it up. Great job on the ergonomics (except the somewhat odd placement of the play button)

Not going to win any awards with this but it was my first test of the AF about 10 minutes after getting my camera. I just stepped outside and noticed this twirling thing my wife has in our flower bed. One "wheel" goes one direction, and the other opposite. They were spinning quite quickly. I didn't set up the shot at all but rather just turned the camera and hit the button. Not a chance in the world my K-5 would have captured this.
K-3iii, ISO 4000, TAv 1/640 @ f4.0 62.5mm with DA* 50-135
Sorry, I don't generally post images so not sure how to set it up to zoom in, but if you could, you would see it's pretty sharp.

This is encouraging. I also normally have my zoom to 100%. Interesting that it is "smart" enough to know you likely want to check the focus on the eyes.

The silver version looks great. Just imagine how much better they would have been if taken with a K-3iii. You should have ordered two. ;-)

The problem will be that I suspect I will need to drive to the local courier location to pick it up if I don't happen to be at home at the time they come. I'm getting my new SD cards on the same trip. I guess I could download the new firmware on an old SD card and have it ready but you should never put new wine in old wineskins (or something like that) so I suspect the shots I take on my way home will be "adequate".

Thanks for the comparison to the K-5. That's what I currently have in my hands while my K-3iii slowly makes its way east. Likely in Saskatchewan at the moment....
