So... What about the AF?

The K-3 III AF.C is absolutely leaps and bounds better than anything Pentax has previously done.
As a matter of fact, it's so much better, that even my screw drive lenses aren't so bad to use anymore while tracking birds (I'm talking about a Sigma 170-500 APO, the older non DG version). The camera is more "aware" of what to do with the AF and it doesn't hunt anymore with screw drive lenses (at least not nearly as much as before). DC and PLM based lenses are VERY quick to lock focus. The AF is now MUCH more decisive in AF.C. It's honestly hard to believe that Pentax, ya PENTAX made this thing. The experience is that different.

Just over the weekend I was doing another YouTube video and had my K-3 with me. I shot with the K-3 III then switched the lens over to my K-3. It took all of maybe 20 seconds before I muttered "Oh my god, this is weird. I loved this camera, but wow does it just feel slow and clunky". SO ya, tracking action whether it's on the ground or things in flight, being able to capture those split second opportunities, we finally have that camera.

The K-3 III is a "sum of all parts" camera. It's not just the vast improvements in AF, it's how fast the camera responds to EVERY input as well. It's just a darn fast camera in general.

Now, as for the eye-AF, it's not a gimmick, but you need to also keep in mind that this is a first generation implementation of eye-AF into a DSLR and can't be compared to mirrorless expectations, it won't even come close. It does work, but in limited scope. Yes the AF may seem to track, but when you take the shot, it may not have focused directly on the eye, maybe the ear, eyebrow, cheek bone just below the eye, those are usually what I end up with along with a couple that are clearly focused on the eye. Distance from the camera seems to play a part (headshots do well, torso and up not as well, full body? Forget it).
I'm still doing some more testing on it. Also, the subject recognition (for face/eye detection in OVF) only works in full auto AF or Zone AF as long as you have subject recognition turned on in the menu.

The body writes the focus points used into the EXIF data. You can see them in playback mode when you press the info button enough times to get to the detailed view. One of the settings for the zoom in playback mode is to zoom in to the focus point. It’s not so much knowing that you want to check the focus on the eyes as it is zooming in on the location where the EXIF data says the camera focused.

As long as the “older” card has been formatted in the new K3iii there shouldn’t be any issues unless previously had issues.

K3-iii, any news on Eye AF and Video Codec?

What's ironic is your implying I made the video to "be first" so that what? I would make a ton of cash because I'm such a big time YT influencer? Obviously you didn't watch the video... because I address that very topic in the first 2 minutes. Yet you can criticize it. Kinda like me making a video comparing the K3 Mark III to the Xt4 when I haven't got the K3 Mark III yet. But it's ok for you to do that but not me? I even said in the video and I quote: "if I wanted to get a bunch of crap dumped on my head I'd hang out in Pentax Forums.":lol:

The point of my video was to serve as an introduction to a series of videos I'm planning on doing comparing my K3 Mark III (when I get it later this week) to my current workhorse Fuji XT4. And to kick off that series while I wait I made a video about my initial thoughts comparing some the the specifications that stood out to me for my purposes. Why would I need to have the camera in hand to compare the specs from the B&H website? How would having the camera in hand change the specifications?

I understand Pentaxians are defensive in nature, it comes with the underdog territory. But make sure your enemy is really an enemy before going into attack mode. I would think underdogs would need all the friends they can find.

And I am extremely interested in the video performance of the K3 Mark III and as soon as I get it, or I find out some other way, what the codec bitrate is and how/if the eye af is there or works I'll let the OP know.

So far it seems that AF during video will only work with certain lenses like the PLM's and to a lessor extent the DC motor ones, but I don't know for sure as I have not tried it yet...

Thanks. I try to be fair and I appreciate you saying as much. I doubt very much that I would or will "trash it." Even without actually having one physically yet it does seem to be pretty impressive from what research I've been doing. (I'm sure that that is OK. Praise without seeing it is OK?)

Some of the more recent 1080P I've seen has looked promising, and someone commented that the 4K is better than the 1080p, so that's very encouraging. As I read above, the codec bitrate is 90 and that's good too. I think it's going to be good, actually, but I'm going to have to see for myself obviously.

The only real question I have is what lens will utilize the video AF to it's full potential. Of course manual focusing is always an option and probably the only option with screw drive lenses, so it will be nice to know what lenses are optimal.

why not send the picture to the electrical authority with a suggestion that they install perch bars on their poles so as to protect such a beautiful creature from electrocution?

Hi Everyone, I've ordered the K-3III today :D and thought I'd take the opportunity to update my file of vector logos of the K-7 series - useful for anyone wanting a scalable K-3III logo for their signature or something else.

There are several other vector files of classic Pentax cameras in the thread.

Which lens for the first K-3 III shots and why?

The first thing I'm going to do.... is sniff the leather strap..... anyway.... after a few snorts are out of the way..... I know it will end up on the 150-450 for 98% of it's life..... and ..... having sniffed the strap.... I am going to delay any DFA 150-450 gratification.

So, I intend to introduce it in a formal way to my lens collection showing appropiate respect..... so as per most traditional world cultures..... it will be introduced to the elders first.... and the children last (the only exception to the children bit.... will of course.... be me... I'll be the kid that stares at the stranger.... touching their new to me bits etc....and leads him/her into the village).

So.... SMC K 50/1.2 first up.... lucky it is silver....

Now.... to choose an appropiate beverage for the occasion....... since I'm getting a silver one... probally needs to be white.... with a hint of sweetness.... maybe also a fresh baked baguette with some Port Salut cheese.

Fwiw.... I have a view that... say.... from K5 to K3 to K1 to KP that the AFC has not been worth chasing through these camera models (to any great extent).... so I can understand this feeling. Off course.... I'm quite confident that this camera will provide a more pleasing AFC experience in combination with it's other refinements.... so I have purchased one.

If they put all those new AF points in there and gave us a joystick to control AF point selection (and made a new grip so it would have it, too!) and didn’t greatly enhance the rest, then there is something seriously, seriously wrong. I have enough confidence in Pentax to believe they have done this right. Is it delivery day yet?

UHS-I protocoll offers higher speed than SD protocoll.

My calculations differ from yours, regarding longer bursts than 2s.

I haven't seen the speed class supported by the K3 III's UHS-I slot but the SD spec itself allows up to 90MB sustained write, meaning AFAIK twice what the KP or any previous Pentax APS-C permitted.

K-3 Mark III preorders live at B&H and Adorama

I told my wife that I had good news and bad news. I said, “the good news is that I love you very very much. The bad news is that the K3mark3 has been released for pre-order.” She asked if that meant I loved the K3mark3 more than her. I told her, “No. I expect the love to be pretty close to equal.”

It’s a good thing she has great sense of humor and is very supportive of my photography.

Already pre-ordered from SRS Microsystems. My 8 year old K5ii developed a fault last summer in that my DA* 16-50 and DA* 50-135 stopped working with it (or more specifically the camera stopped working when either of those lenses was attached). It wasn't the lenses themselves, in that they continue to work fine with my son's K5, nor is it the camera in most respects, in that I had retained the DA 18-55 kit lens and the camera is fine with that. Not was it the SDM contact, which I had cleaned thoroughly, so it seems it is something deeper in the camera's electronics. Repairers didn't want to touch it, so I concluded that the time had come to replace. I did consider a KP, but didn't like the handling, but was pleased to see from the initial teasers that the K3 iii looked as if it should feel right for me. A bit pricier than I was expecting, but it was my 60th birthday last October (I would have had it then if it hadn't been delayed!) and I am about to retire, so the timing is right, and I whilst I could have waited until the first price drop, who knows when that would be, and in any case I've already missed one summer with the above two lenses. And I intend to keep it long term, so any initial premium will be spread over its lifetime (I like to think!). Excited by the prospect.

Nice work. If you look back a few pages of this thread, member @subsea managed to get some beautiful images with his FA28-80. Being a "kit lens", there's probably a bit of sample variation at play here. Welcome to the Club!

Sorry for doing a "veering-off-topic" - but - 2020 lockdown in Melbourne was horrid, it was not an easy time, a lot of us are still recovering emotionally and/or financially. (and we are all giving thanks for the results) -

OK, back to the topic
