Below two from my recent shoots with K-01.
I love this camera more and more every day I use it - I wish that Pentax would release similar camera in the future - K-01 will eventually get older and when I think of it I already miss it and its solid feel which pairs so perfectly with all my manual lenses...
Come one Pentax! Make us K-02 some day !!

Pentax K-01 200mm f5.6

This duck below has posed for me literally sitting and looking at me for all the time when I was setting my camera up, attaching long lens and pointing at it with it from like 3-4 meters away! I have another shot with three of them which were sitting nearby - also patiently waiting until I was done with photos - and it was quite separated area of canal with some wild nature around - so quite extraordinary for them not to run away..

Better Beamer and the AF540FGZ

if you look at the site for the better beamer

Flash Extender size fitting guide

and measure the AF540FGZ you will find it is 72mm wide and 38mm high and it has streight sides.

that puts it in the FX1 range.

Getting the FX2 will result in a slightly loose fit on the flash head. and this will cause poor aiming of the beam.

If the Samyang costs 999, it's cheaper than to buy a fullframe for a 35mm you own.

I visit this forum, I still visit Olympus, Canon, & Sony. This one is not much different.

How do you think the Sony forums looked when Sony discontinued the A700 for over a year before announcing the replacement?
How do you think the Sony forums looked when Sony announced that SLT was the future and OVFs were dead?

Olympus took 5 years to replace the E-1 and 3 years to replace the E-3, and when they announced they were focusing on M4/3 as the future.... Total meltdown. What would happen if the K-5 did not get replaced for 5 years?

I wont eve start to list all screaming you get on the Canon forums. Then the 5DII & D700 came out Canon users bitched because they did not have Nikon AF, Nikon owners bitched because they did not have the Canon HD video and were stuck at 12MP.

One last question which wasn't taped:

Q: "Will you continue releasing firmware updates for the K-5 now that the K-5 II has been announced?"

A: [To fix bugs and improve stability], yes, we would continue releasing K-5 firmware updates if needed.

Definition of a Pentaxian... by an 8 year old

Another thread just reminded me of a little story.

We were on holiday as a family a couple of months ago in Australia. As we were taking in the sights of the Blue Mountains I walked past a 20-something European with a K-10 and congratulated her on her choice of camera.

I then remarked to my wife that it's nice to bump into a Pentaxian enjoying their camera in such a beautiful place.

My 5 year old then said "Daddy, what is a Pentaxian?"

His older brother didn't miss a beat and replied "A strange alien that loves cameras".

A FF DSLR for a ~5% marketshare player simply isn't viable if the camera is going to be competitive. Pentax also have to release a bunch of FF lenses along with the camera. They need to be more sucessfull in volume market before FF is a realistic options. That means more APS camera that sells even better than todays models.

Impressions of the K-30

I had the chance to try out the K-30 in the Pentax Forum in Shinjuku. Personally, I have a K-01 and K20D, so those are my points of reference. Although, I've often picked up K-5s in shops, I've never used one properly, so I'm afraid I can't comment on how much better the PDAF is.

SIze & weight
The first thing I noticed was how light and compact the K-30 feels. It handles very well and all the buttons seem to be easy to reach. While the K-01 has a dense feel to it, the K-30 feels quite like a K-R. I'm actually not sure which is lighter, but remember the K-30 has a smaller battery as standard and has more volume, so that's probably why it feels lighter.

Build quality
The body on the standard black one is made of the same stuff as the K20D (I asked about this). The dials are OK but feel kind of flimsy compared to the metal ones on the K-01. They're probably the same as on the K-R and no cause for worry.

Autofocus
The PDAF was certainly faster than my K20D and seemed very snappy. I tried it with the DAL 18-55 and the DA 18-135. CDAF is better than the K-5 by a mile. What surprised me was that CDAF was also a bit faster than the K-01 and the guy helping me confirmed that this was the case. Given that the two cameras have the same internals, it makes me hopeful for the next K-01 firmware.

Other
  • The shutter was as loud as previous DSLRs, not like the K-7 or K-5.

  • The viewfinder was just as good as the K20D.

  • I asked speculatively about whether there was going to be anything between the K-01 and K-30. I got a rather puzzled response. It seems clear that Pentax views these two cameras as being different to each other, but on a similar level in terms of overall positioning. Actually, when you feel the quality of materials of the two side-by-side, this makes sense, even if pure specs might suggest otherwise.

Overall, it looks like the K-30 is a great camera and does most of what the K-5 can do, plus the extra live view stuff that came with the K-01. If build quality is at the top of your list of priorities, however, the K-5 is clearly better constructed.

Nice write-up.

But from what I experienced, the shutter in K-30 is definitely different from the one in K-r or K-x. It's a bit quieter w/ less hesitation.

One thing you forgot to mention is that the grip on K-30 is a better design even than K-5. There is more space on the back where the thumb rests, not like K-5 which has a couple of buttons there, and the rear dial is too close to the thumb on K-5. The K-30 grip is a bit deeper but narrower, the rubber used is a bit stickier too so you'd feel more secure when holding a K-30 than a K-5, especially w/ a longer heavier lens mounted.

Another change from K-5 is that the LCD screen on K-30 seems to be sharper and more saturated than the one on K-5. Even looking at the menu (text), the one on K-30 just looks a lot better. Same photo would appear sharper w/ a lot better colors on K-30's screen than on the K5's.

As I said in the other thread, I don't mind getting a K-30 if choosing between these two. The only thing I'd miss is probably the bigger capacity battery used in K-5, but I'd gain better grip, better LCD, better video, slightly better AF, better MF w/ focus peaking and sharper LCD ...

Purchased this lens recently from the forum marketplace, and have been very pleased with it. Long enough for birding, but small enough to fit in a daypack for long hikes. Fine color and detail, especially when stopped down a bit. Here are a few samples, all taken with K20D, and only minor cropping for compositional purposes:

Quite a few entries this time. Unfortunately, quite a few also had the photographer's name on them, which immediately disqualified them (for me, at least, but I also think that one of the rules of these contests is that there must not be any photographer's name on the picture). I think perhaps for the ease of the rest of us trying to vote (to reduce the number of images), the images with the photographer's name and/or company should be removed before the voting commences.

Rebuttal:
I can respect your belief, but your statements could be easily challenged. All it would take is for Frank and Creampuff to post images of the same subject
shot with either the K-01 or the K-5, perhaps including the K-r and K-x. All cameras would of course use the same "small prime" lens. I have a feeling that
most of us on this forum would be hard pressed to positively identify which image was taken with any given camera (with Exif data removed and resized to the same dimensions).
Obviously a computer monitor is not the best medium for comparison and printing would likely show some differences.

Secondly, before you let incredulity get the upper hand, a little bit of patience might go a long way, as there are more products in the pipeline. I was quite surprised
by the K-01, but it never entered my mind to think of it as the de-facto replacement of the K-x, K-R, K-7 or K-5. The K-01 is simply a new product that addresses
a different way of taking pictures and yet still leverages an existing lens line-up. And there simply is no rule that says that the K-01 should have smaller dimensions
than it has. The K-01 is what it is and may well experience an evolutionary path. :D

If you have a smaller film SLR like a MESuper, try this.

Hold the camera in the classic fashion shown in a SLR instruction manual - left palm cradling the base, right hand around the side, thumb on back (where K-01 buttons are) finger on release.

Holding your elbows in at your sides with a strong stance (left foot slightly forward), bring the camera up to CHIN LEVEL 6"-10" away from you face - NOT ARMS' LENGTH - and look slightly down at the film holder frame. Imagine that is a LCD.

Hold the position until your arms are actually tired. I got seven minutes.

I wear trifocals, bifocal progressive prescription sunglasses and I have cataracts (for three more weeks) and glaucoma. My conclusion from my experiment is I will be able to use the LCD exclusively, without needing to hold the camera at arms' length.

That only works because the camera is LARGER AND HEAVIER than the NEX-style EVF cameras everyone is so enamored of. There's actually enough volume in the body to hold this camera like it is an SLR. That's a really great thing!!

I DON'T WANT An EVF OR OVF on this camera. I don't NEED an EVF OR OVF on this camera. They're never as good as an SLR VF anyway. Save that for the K-r replacement I bet they announce at CP+ and the K-5 replacement coming this summer.

I want all the stuff that makes great images and video for $750 US. And I like the yellow (and the all-black, if we can ever get it). I believe this will be a great camera and a home run for Pentax. Mark Newson's design (form design) is actually inspired if you think the way I'm thinking.

Be of good cheer, Pentaxians. Ricoh has a plan and you will be happy.

Here are 2 macro shots using the K-01 and F100/2.8 macro
Prototype firmware (pls note)

Its prototype atm, PDCU does not process the file properly for now (ie. no exp adj and such). (update expected soon)
Ironically, all this can be done in ACR ;)

had to do highlight recovery on this one, so don't read too much into it.
