This is from Lofoten, Norway. Taken from Ballstad, looking towards Himmeltindan (the mountain in the background), the midnight sun is up and behind some rainy clouds creating some fantastic colors (this is daylight WB) and a double rainbow in the right of the scene.

Low video quality (comparison with the K-5 and Nokia 808 PureView)

That's what I believe as well. And why the image from the much smaller sensor of the Nokia 808 is so much better as it resizes down each frame from the 38 megapixels available for 16:9 ratio of the sensor.

That video looks pretty good. I'll make a video to show you my problem within the next few days. I'm preparing for a vacation, so I'm not sure when it will be up.

So you mean I'm doing something wrong with it? Got any idea what? Because I'm out of ideas.

I've tested on a tripod with shake reduction off. All in M-mode in the menue while in movie mode on the mode dial, so I have manual control on ISO, shutter speed and aperture, and my changes to these is reflected in the footage, so I'm pretty sure it's working correctly (except with a totally manual lens where M-mode is broken, SMC Pentax K 135mm f/2.5). I'm using full HD, 1080p and quality level is on full (three stars). Focus is correct, I've tested wide open and stopped down to f/5.6 and f/8 where sharpness is at its best. I've tested with various custom image pre-sets and I've also changed one to where it's all flat so I can fix it in post and get more dynamic range and details in the recorded footage. I've tested with a fully manual lens which messes up M-mode, and with various automatic lenses which all have great image quality, and still I get an image that looks like it's upscaled DVD resolution. The camera gives great image quality for photography, I've used it a lot since I got it, so I know the camera can give great image quality. And I'm pretty sure it's not a bit rate issue as the Nokia 808 PureView has less bit rate, but better details.

Do you have a sample clip I can see where you feel it's great image quality?

I don't know, sorry, I don't wear glasses.

But I saw a video where a guy says he could wear his glasses while using the LCDVF. If you see my picture of the camera with it on, you see it also has a foamy bit on the eye piece. I believe the video was on the manufacturers website.

Possible Sensor Issues?

Are you sure the aperture opens up when you take your pictures? Look in the lens when you take a picture to see what happens. For a 2 second exposure, you will see clearly if the aperture is open or stopped down some, or fully.

Hm, I wrote this a couple of hours ago, weird it didn't get posted :O I probably forgot to post it :P

It's the LCDVF by Kinotehnik. I like it a lot. I'm very warm, so I get a bit of fog on the glass at times, but it's not a big problem. Other than that, very nice. You first mount a magnetic square around the screen, then you take the LCDVF of and off as you please. Very handy and easy to use, and it comes with a pouch to transport it in so you avoid dust and scratches etc..

Here is the manufacturer's website (there are some videos there to show how it works): Kinotehnik - LCDVF Overview

I forgot something. Also, since it gives you a third point of contact (your head), it makes it a lot more stable to record video hand held. I did some video recording on Sunday at a motocross event, just to see how it turned out, and I used a 135mm, which is fairly long for hand held, and I had shake reduction off. I'll upload it so you can see the result. I'll update this post with it later today. This makes it good IMO for recording interviews or other things without using a tripod or monopod.

Update:
Sorry about the delayed update. My Adobe subscription started acting up, so I couldn't edit the video as the software didn't start up. Got it fixed now though. Here are to variants of the videos I recorded:

Just had the black and silver K-01 for 8 days now. For photography, I'm very happy with it. Fantastic image quality and works great with my favorite lens, the SMC Pentax K 135mm f/2.8. I'm using it with the LCDVF, and it's great.

Yes, I know that. But I'm pretty sure it's not the data rate here. My reason for thinking so is the image quality of the Nokia 808 PureView which is the same codec, just at a lower bit rate. I've explained that already.

The sensor isn't that small, it's 3,24 x crop factor :P Big for a phone.

Anyway, yes, I know the effects of big and small aperture openings. I tested with f/8 in the screenshots I shared, and focus was placed correctly to get everything in view in focus. The lens used was the Tamron 17-50mm which is plenty sharp enough, I have no problem with sharpness with my lenses and photography, but all look bad in video on the K-5 and K-01.

I only have one K-lens, the SMC Pentax K 135mm f/2.5, so the broken M-mode for video only gives me problems with this lens.

The bit rate isn't the biggest problem. The Nokia 808 PureView has the same codec, but less than half the bitrate, and a lot better video quality. High bitrate is fine, but it's pointless if the image quality is low to begin with, like now.

Thanks you for the uploads :) I'm still not sold on the image quality :/ I can only hope a future Pentax camera has better quality. Since I'm sure it's not a bitrate issue as the Nokia has less than half the bitrate, but better image quality, it must be before the encoding starts, so I hope they pull the image from the sensor in a better way in later models. The K-30 has the same problem.

The camera is still great for manual focus photography, so it's not a waste at all still, just not all I hoped it would be.

I'm going to photograph some motocross tomorrow, and I'll be bringing my K-5 and K-01 with me. I've only had the K-01 since Monday (so 5-6 days now), and I haven't really tested it properly the way I mean to use it for photography, with the LCDVF as a viewfinder and using focus peaking for manual focus lenses. Here are some images I took in my back yard of some leaves and bumblebees. This was to test how this combination is to use, so the pictures might not be the most beautiful ones, but they really show the strength of the K-01 with a very good manual lens (SMC Pentax K 135mm f/2.5). Also, this lens has amazing bokeh and sharpness. I wish Pentax would make this lens again with better coating so there would be less aberrations, and maybe AF if it doesn't break the manual focus feeling of it :)

These pictures are taken at f/2.5 and f/4:

Ah, I see. I know I can use K-mount on Canon's APS-C cameras, I will try to get hold of one for a test to see how it turns out. But they don't have peaking though. But for just video, that's not a big thing, as they do have HDMI out for while you record, so I can use a monitor that has peaking.

I'm going to photograph some motocross tomorrow, and I'll bring both my K-5 and K-01, and maybe I'll try some video. I'll also test the Nokia for that just to see the detail level.

Maybe for one of them if it's OK.

This is the reason I did a test where things were mostly still, so bit rate would be less of an issue. The K-01 and K-5 video still did worse than the Nokia though, and the Nokia and K-01 has the same codec, Nokia between 7 and 8 Mbit, the K-01 around 18 or so in that video, the Nokia was still a lot more detailed, so it happens before encoding.

How is it using a Pentax lens on Sony? Do you get aperture control?

The things that I can think of now:
  • An M-mode that actually works with completely manual lenses would be nice.

  • A buffer so raw isn't just one image per second, at least a couple of images.

  • Adjustment for focus peaking, so precision can be adjusted, also color of peaking.

  • Ability to take a digital preview (maybe it's there already, but I'm not figuring out how, I'm only getting the camera to stop down with any of the red og green button as preview, not digital as on the Pentax DSLRs).

  • Composition adjustment.

  • Option to use sensor shift for shake reduction.

  • Interval shooting that just goes until either battery is empty or card is full, not stopping at 999 images.

  • Proper image quality for video.

  • Levels for audio during video, so the record volume can be set sensibly, maybe even headphones out.

  • Option to use the full sensor for video when shake reduction is off (now a little field of view is lost in video).

  • Live View via HDMI to an external monitor with HD signal out.

The size is fine for me, I don't need it any smaller. I don't want it any smaller, it will be too awkward to handle properly.

It's the same codec as the Nokia 808 PureView uses, and it has just below half the bitrate, with better quality. I suspect it has to do with how the image is pulled from the sensor.

I couldn't judge the quality from those videos, they were too low resolution, 640*480, sorry.

I don't see why a new line of lenses is wanted. There are so many great lenses for K-mount to use, why make a new line of lenses just for a mirrorless camera? Then a big part of the reason to get one would be gone for me.
