Nope; that didn't do it. I can change the initial zoom, but no matter what the initial zoom is set to, it only stays there for about half a second then runs away to x 20 and sticks there. It's starting to get frustrating.

Hi folks.
This problem just showed up on my K10D:
When viewing photos on the camera display, when I roll the zoom button to zoom in, it runs away and goes all the way up to "x20" magnification. Is there a setting somewhere I've accidently changed, or is this a (minor) foul-up?

Okay, maybe there’s something I have to set or adjust that’s not covered in this thread, or maybe I’m incredibly thick. Or maybe both. Here’s what I’ve done, with a 50mm f/1.7 mounted on my K10D:
1. In Custom function, set "Allow aperture setting other than A" to 2 (allowed).
2. Set the camera to M mode.
3. Select the desired aperture using the lens aperture ring.
4. Press the "Green Button". At this point, there’s a sort of “shunk” sound and the display shows a shutter speed that seems to make sense given the f-stop I’ve selected. (The ISO in the display seems a bit wacky though – something like 1599.)
5. Press the shutter button. Result – occasionally, it will fire, but 90% of the time, absolutely nothing happens.
What am I missing? Or is there a setting or function somewhere that’s counter-acting my attempt to get this manual lens to function?

Thanks a heap, Marc! That goes a long way towards explaining the focusing problems I was having with my old manual 50 near wide open. So it wasn't just the rum eggnog...

That was precisely the problem. Thanks guys. I missed that bit in my quick read through the manual.
Although I do have to wonder why someone thought a menu item to essentially disable a switch on the camera body was a good idea.:D

Hello. I have a new-to-me K10D on which the AF only kicks in when I press the AF button on the camera back, not when I depress the shutter release. Is this a problem that I'll either have to fix or just live with, or is there a setting somewhere that might be over-riding the shutter release AF actuation?
If I have to live with it, that's not a huge problem. I rather prefer manual focus in most situations, but it's nice to have the option.

Apologies if this has been answered somewhere else, but can anyone tell me if it's possible to completely turn off the LCD display when shooting? I really hate taking photos in low light and having the photo I just took blazing out the back of the camera and distracting people. There must be a way...

BTW, the name Relic was given to me when I had an aluminum boat in Halifax harbour that looked somewhat like Relic's jetboat.

I really hope this isn't a stupid question, but here goes...
I have my istD set at ISO 200 most of the time, just because I'm comfortable with fixed ISO and want the low noise. But given that auto ISO really only changes the ISO within a small range, if I switched to auto ISO (200-400) in Tv mode, how does the camera decide which to change (or which to change first) - ISO or aperture? Can't find anything about that in the manual.

Hello from a newbie to this forum. I've recently made the transition from 35mm to a Pentax DSLR and I love the way my istD feels so much like my old 35mm. I'm still trying to learn the digital features though, such as the whole "picture mode" thing.
I usually shoot in Tv (or as I prefer to call it, "shutter priority") because that's what I'm comfortable with from my 35mm days, but what benefit would be derived from switching to the various pre-defined modes for say, landscape, portrait, etc.? Seems to me that Tv, Av or M would give me more control in any situation. And macro mode -- what's that? Especially if I don't have a macro lens.
Sorry if this is a topic that's been beat to death already. I searched but couldn't find anything on it, and the manual that came with my istD really doesn't explain it in any detail.

Good day, all. I've been lurking around here for a while and have decided to come out of the bushes. After many years of 35mm (strictly hobby) I made the shift to digital a few years back, to some pretty sophisticated point-and-shoots with super zooms, but always felt I was missing something. Then I grabbed a Pentax istD and a couple of lenses :D and it was like getting back to "real" photography again. However, I'm basically using it like my old 35 and not taking advantage of all the settings that the DSLR has to offer, so I'll be posting a couple of questions soon to try and understand these additional features.
