They only extend the hood during courtship or male-on-male antagonistic display, so it is not extended most of the time.

Pentax makes the PF-CA35, which is specifically designed to adapt their DSLRs to their T-mount spotting scopes and is also a 2X tele-converter. That makes the 485mm focal length of the body into a 970mm focal length*. I have one to use with my Pentax spotting scope. I don't know whether it was designed for APS-C bodies only. It was in production long before the K-1 was released. The on-line sellers I checked show it unavailable, so it may have been discontinued. Maybe they'll restart production now that this new scope is out.
*Edit: my mistake, the focal length is for the PR-EDA, a model sold in Europe and Asia.

Friggin' magnificent! I've enjoyed watching them hang in the sky without flapping their wings in surprisingly light winds. As a taxonomic family, the frigatebirds have the lowest wing loading of any birds, i.e., the ratio of weight to wing area. Having this large wing area spread over a long, narrow wing allows them to have a very low stall speed, i.e., they have the ability to stay aloft without flapping in wing speeds lower than any other birds. Another species, the Great Frigatebird of the Indian Ocean, has been tracked staying aloft for up to 3 months! They can allow one hemisphere of their brain go to sleep at a time while aloft. They have been tracked with both hemispheres of the brain asleep for brief periods.

Very nice. The Steller's Jay looks like the Pacific coast subspecies. Incidentally, Steller's Jay was named after Georg Wilhelm Stöhler, a German naturalist who changed his name to Steller when he volunteered for Russian expeditions to remote parts of the Russian Empire like Alaska and Siberia. Other species named after him include Steller's Eider, Steller's Sea Cow (a now extinct, giant manatee), and Steller's Sea Lion. Smart phone autocorrect apps might change Steller to stellar.

I have one of these. It's a very sharp lens. It's also surprisingly compact. Although it has screw drive focus, it is significantly smaller and, especially, lighter than the D FA 150-450mm (2.9" x 6.3", 40.2 oz. vs. 3.7" x 9.5", 70.5 oz.).

In addition to the pale colour at the base of the primaries, the fact that Broad-wings are in South America at this time of the year suggests that this is a Red-shoulder.

It looks like Sun Camera Service contacts the sender directly to get approval to proceed with the repairs. Given that information, you should be ale to make a direct request about your repair. Whether or not they will reply in a timely manner or reply at all is another matter.
Sun Camera Service Repair process: Sun Camera Service Ltd. - Repair Process
Sun Camera Service Contact us: Sun Camera Service Ltd. - Contact Us
Ricoh Imaging Canada repair information: Note that the camera to be repaired must be addressed to "RICOH IMAGING CANADA INC" but the address it must be sent to is that of Sun (2150 Steeles Avenue West, Unit #5, Concord, ON, L4K 2Y7), although the phone number doesn't match the number on Sun Camera's website. The e-mail address given is Ricoh's but I don't know whether Sun replies directly. https://www.ricoh-imaging.ca/support/repairs/ |

Pentax's Canadian office (https://www.ricoh-imaging.ca/) is in Mississauga, but the authorized repair facility is independently-owned: Sun Camera on Steeles Avenue in the Concorde part of Vaughan. Sun is also the Canadian authorized facility for Nikon and Canon.

Unfortunately the wording says that the warranty does not cover damage resulting from misuse or water or abuse. It does not say that water damage resulting from user abuse or misuse is not covered. The wording allows Ricoh to avoid warranty claims from water damage arising from any and all causes.
“This warranty does not cover finishes or batteries, nor does it cover damages resulting from accident, misuse, abuse, dirt, water, battery leakage, tampering, servicing performed or attempted by unauthorized service agencies."
However, this is entirely aside from whether the advertised weather-resistance is misleading. I guess the moral of the story is to buy insurance or be prepared to pay out of your own pocket if the camera is damaged by water.

The original post says: "The PH-RBK 67 is on order everywhere I looked, in the EU, UK, even in the bloody US! So I wrote to the Ricoh-EU official support website. This was the answer:
"Unfortunately we do not have a PH-RBK 67 on offer."

In Canada any price other than the MSRP (Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price) for Pentax gear is very rare, and occurs after the camera has been discontinued and the replacement model has been released. Exception may include small discounts at Amazon a couple of years after the product release. I would like to be proven wrong, but that's my experience.

My theory is that DPReview has a different definition of "bulky" than most people. :) It's probably a dog-whistle word meaning "not-Nikon", "not-Canon", or "not-Leica".

Don't try that in Canada. I have tried countless times to bring a tripod in carry-on luggage in Canada but was allowed to do so only once. As a result, I have stopped trying.

Henry's doesn't keep any Pentax equipment in stock, except for a couple of consumer grade lenses and used gear -- no bodies at all. They have very little of the models that Ricoh Canada already has in stock, i.e., they have no stock of K-3 III, K-P, or K-1 II. The other three stores are the same, except they don't even give you the option of special ordering K-3 II or K-P. Almost all Pentax gear is by special order only, so expect delays even if you order something that Ricoh Canada already has in stock. Amazon Canada is no better. However, Camera Canada does show stock of the K-1 II.

Bec-croisé bifascié is known as White-winged Crossbill in North America outside of Quebec. (AOS Checklist of North and Middle American Birds) It's known as Two-barred Crossbill in the United Kingdom. ---------- Post added 27th Mar 2021 at 13:56 ----------
They use the crossed bill to pry apart the scales on pine and spruce cones, then use the tongue to extract the seed.

The 4X magnification 3 in 1 binocular wouldn't work for higher magnifications because the two barrels wouldn't be collimated with sufficient accuracy to produce a binocular image that wouldn't give you a headache. I know this from decades of birding and having been presented with binoculars that have been knocked out of alignment.
I agree. This is a clever attempt to target an under-exploited niche, rather than throwing something into an already crowded market. I've never seen a 3 in 1 binocular8 before. Now if only they would use the mechanical optical stabilizing technology from the 645 lenses in a 10X42 weather-resistant binocular...

I wouldn't normally bring up a listing from my local Facebook Marketplace because most of the stuff is junk, but someone in my area (St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada) has listed an SMC Takumar 500mm f/4.5 lens (M42 mount) with the original case in what appears to be excellent condition for $600 CAD ($480 USD) (see the link to the listing below, with photos of the lens). I don't know the person who is selling it, but he says it's in "exceptional condition" and I'm inclined to agree based on the photos. He tapped an extra hole on the tripod foot and installed a "double screw Arca Swiss plate with 90º ears". He says the lenses are fungus free. I would buy it for myself if I didn't already own an SMC A* 600mm f/5.6. 500mm f/4.5 Lens - Lenses - St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador | Facebook Marketplace |
