Very interesting idea Kevin. It should be fun!
btw can we use some old shots? Or should we use only the ones clicked after the contest is announced?

As I mentioned before it was really hard to decide which ones are better than others, I will not have three places. I think I'm already making a hard decision by choosing one, so I'll have honorable mentions/ tied second placers/ whatever you wanna call them and one winner. Here are the honorable mentions:
Bart started the thread off with a really nice minimal composition of the piers. I really liked the way the piers kind of led the eye into the center of the frame:
The followup by unixrevolution also was really good. Honestly, the lines of the wheel were taking the eye to the corner of the frame which was a negative point IMO but with the clouds and the colorful gondolas in the rest of the frame he managed to get enough distraction to get the eye drifting to the corner. I somehow like this image a lot:
Yetterbium's Latvian academy of sciences actually was very close to what I was looking for. Not a lot of elements that are very exciting by themselves, not a very different composition but a very simplistic and minimal one, but still, the combination of all these simple things just makes you stare at the image for a while.
Chubasco's little boats were really nice addition to the thread too. Honestly, I'm not even sure what it is but it kinda works for me. I guess it's the subject and color but am not sure.

Now the WINNER ..... Kevin's daughter had the right shot for my taste. The way wires draw your eye to the main brick part of the bridge, the positioning of all the lines, it's amazing. I've been to the Brooklyn bridge many times and I've seen many many horrible shots of this beautiful bridge and I think this shot did perfect justice to the bridge.
Kevin, congratulate your daughter from our side and she gets to choose the next competition. And yea, she gets to be the judge too. You're just a mediator :p Let's see what she comes up with, for us.
Great competition guys! I had a lot of fun. Looking forward to some fun in the next competition.
Best,
Tulasi

Nice shots Tamia, Aegon and Chubasco. At last we got decent number of shots in the competition. But that means tough work for me. I've been thinking about the shots posted and will post the result in the next post.

Nice image unixrevolution! The colors are really nice. Could you also explain what you had on your mind when you took the picture?

Very nice pictures Bart!! I think you got the idea exactly right.
Sorry if my examples were confusing. I just wanted to share some examples where I thought a lot about composition and feel that composition is the only important element in those, not image quality, not processing. Just familiar subjects with a little different composition/view.
I hope this clarifies things for others who might be confused. I have added some more (italicized) description in the original posts too. Please let me know if that reduces the confusion.

Just some examples to show what I have on my mind. These are not necessarily taken with P&S cameras but are just some examples of what I have on mind. The common feature of all these examples is that these are usual common things/situations that I see, which I tried to present in either a different way or a minimal way. I had to think a lot about composition for these shots.
I wanted to use the inward drawing lines to draw the viewer's attention towards the center and wanted to use the train as a part of the lines too. Taken with my A590IS, sharpened and sepia conversion done in GIMP
I wanted to emphasize the afternoon shadows of the tables and/or chairs at the coffee shop and kinda liked the way the shadow of this table merged well with the legs of the table giving it an alien feeling. Taken with my D80, slight crop and B&W conversion done in GIMP
I wanted to show the drummer and the drum in a minimal way and wanted the emphasis to be on the drum and the sticks. Somehow this compo seemed to give me that. Taken with D80, square crop and slight sepia cast done in GIMP
I wanted to present a different angle to the familiar game and this macro shot kinda gave a different and dizzying view of the game. Taken with a friend's Canon S3 IS, B&W conversion done in GIMP
Hope these help explain what I have on my mind. MOST IMPORTANTLY, ENJOY TAKING PICTURES AND SHARING THEM :) |

Theme - "Composition"
The emphasis should be on composition. Here is what I mean
"The image should be as simplistic/minimal as possible relying mostly on the composition of the image. The use of empty spaces, rule of 3rds, sense of motion in the composition or even breaking the formal rules of composition if you can find a *bohemian* composition." Maybe some familiar subject with a different view. The emphasis should be solely on how to present a common situation in an interesting way.
*Preferably no* or slight post-processing. Color/contrast adjustments, rotate/crop etc are fine. I think this would help bring out the real strength of composition.
It would be nice if you added a line or two describing what you had in mind when you took the picture.
THE RULES
1. Have fun!
2. No 35mm, APS, or 4/3 SLR/DSLR cameras allowed. 110 film SLRs, 35mm and smaller rangefinder/viewfindercameras are allowed. No medium or large format cameras allowed.
3. Entries will close on May 30th, 2010.
4. Maximum image dimensions are 800x800 pixels.
5. List camera brand, model with entry for all to see.
6. THEME: "Composition"
7. Max of 3 photographs per person.
8. Winner will set up and judge next contest.
Let's get rolling with our P&S's friends :)

Will, unless going way above 350mm is a big thing for you, I would suggest going for something like Canon SX120IS. It gives you all the manual controls easily usable. 10X zoom gives you a good range of 36-360mm (35mm equiv), Canon's IS system is reasonably good and with chdk (CHDK Wiki) you get RAW functionality as well as a bucket load of ultra cool features like being able to write your own scripts for the camera to do interesting things, various kinds of grids, DOF calculator. They have a lot of cool scripts already in the archives like time lapse, motion detection, the lost of features goes on and on. Oh yes, SX120 IS (and some other canon P&S cameras) also gives you some manual focus capabilities. Not as great as an SLR but is ultra useful. I use this feature 70% of the times on my A590IS.
Most of all it much cheaper as well as much more pocketable and much cheaper than any of the super zooms. Do look at the CHDK website and explore pictures with chdk tag on flickr to see its capabilities. You'll be amazed.

I've never owned a Pentax P&S and have sometimes wondered about getting the rugged Pentax P&S but I would like to have a point and shoot camera that at the very least gives me manual controls over shutter and aperture. Right now I have a Canon A590 IS and it's doing a good job but I'll probably give it to my parents and get a new one for myself.

Well 4 posts a day is a long shot for me too. But the prize is too good to pass away. I'm a Nikon user mainly but have one ME Super with a 50 f/1.7 and I just love that lens. The camera is pretty nice too. Just for being small enough to be not a big pain to carry around. I need to CLA it though.
