is it so that the meter is always activated on the kx? whereas the meter only reads when stopped down on the spotties?

i am looking to upgrade to digital, but i also wanted to find a good clean manual film body at the same time. some nice poster suggested that i go with the kx - so i've been focusing on that particular model - solely based on their suggestion. forgive me as i might not be using the proper vernacular but please correct me if i am wrong. also, when framing my questions, please keep in mind, my reference is from using my dads spotmatic.
on the spotmatic when composing a shot, i believe that the lens is wide open and the switch on the side stops the lens down to the chosen aperture setting to take the meter reading. (correct?) when you slide this button, my memory recalls that it does not stay in the stopped down position after release, but returns the lens to wide open.
when using other manuals like the kx, what does the dof switch do and how does this function operate.
also, is the preview through the eyepiece as large and as bright as through the spotmatic on these other manual bodies?
i know that they make screw to k adapters, but i would rather have something more easily compatible when trading lenses back and forth between my digital body and my film body.

i've read about the screw mount to k mount adapter. how many of these do i need? do i get just one and use it for all of my lenses i may buy or do you just leave it on the camera and the screwmount lenses screw into it?
i had thought of this idea but thought that if i had to spend an additional $30 to make a lens forward compatible then that lens might not be cost effective for me to get.

thanks for your input. certainly i will look up prices of the lenses that you have mentioned and re-evaluate my purchase needs.
as i haven't as of yet purchased a setup - this forums has been invaluable in passing along info that i might not have gathered otherwise.

nothing against the 'a' series & newer lenses except the price. in my few posts here, i've tried to explain my purpose of trying to go digital and replicate the experience of using my dad's spotmatic, but on the cheap. the digital cameras that i've had in the past were not much better than point-n-shoots (fuji s7000). i don't mind shooting completely manual. i am just trying to educate myself on the subject and make the right purchase for my needs. many will say that i must buy and have a trial by fire experience, but my budget does not allow for that. i might not have the nicest set of cameras, but i don't consider myself completely without a clue.
my goal. buy one of the k or ist kits used with the kit lens and then buy several manual lenses.

in the meantime since my question was posted and reading your answers, i read some reviews on the 'a' lenses. i am gonna lean heavily towards the 'm' or 'k' series. it seems that other than size, the major difference between the 'm' and 'k' lenses is the coating. does this coating affect the manual/'green button' ttl metering on the 'ist' or k100d bodies?

thanks for the link. it has explained alot. in my search for a manual lens, is there any advantage of the 'a' over the 'm'? from my reading, i don't think so, but i could be misunderstanding things.

Glad to hear your reassurances. I didn't learn on the spotmatic, but using it was quite simple. On other non-dslr type cameras, such as my wife's fuji s7000, all of the controls are on the camera and i like to shoot that in manual mode most of the time. i like to think of myself as a student of photography and shooting that camera in manual mode has forced me to learn some things.
i've got to get out the spotmatic. i don't remember which of those images you so kindly pointed me at was representative of what i remember seeing through the spotmatic. i found the design for focusing the spotmatic very intuitive. i must've been doing it wrong, or it was just that intuitive, cuz i don't remember that circle being as significant to my composition as maybe what i am being relayed to right now as it's significance in digital camera bodies. maybe i am just misreading.
seeing as how i want to go down the manual route, do you suggest i get one of these focusing screens installed on whatever body i end up purchasing? is there a suggested/better screen?
thanks everyone for all of this useful info. it might take me months of reading and still not come up with all the info packed into this forum.

i don't know what good is when using manual focus. when using my dad's spotmatic, it seems quite easy to focus manually. i can't imagine that it is much harder or easier when going digital. regarding the crop factor, thank you for bringing that up. i have read about this, but i'll still start with the 50mm. i think that my next lens will be either or both the 28mm and/or the 35mm. again, i want to go down the manual path just due to the cost factor. i'll probably buy the kit with it's accompanying combo lens, then everything after that will be good old prime glass.

i do plan to be in this hobby for the rest of my life. i've been interested in photography for many years and my interest has been peaked by the efforts of recording my daughters childhood. i've had some fun with my dad's spotmatic, but, alas, it's not mine to shoot with. most of my shots have come from my wife's fuji s7000. i believe that i am near the point as you say where my skills have outgrown my camera. i've included a few shots to show what i've done and where i want to go. the reason i've been leaning towards shooting manual is mainly due to the fact that i really like shooting the my dad's old spotmatic and also it seems that the manual route happens to be the cheaper route. where can i find the fa50/1.4 for sale?

i have just started educating myself on the dslr route. my only other noteworthy experience is with my dad's '72 spotmatic. i really like that camera so i was hoping that moving to a dslr would not be all that bumpy of a road. please let me know if my thinking is flawed.
um....add to "TO DO" list the following - google focusing screen.
as this is my second post to this forum - i am happy to see that this is exactly the kind of constructive advice i was seeking when i signed up. i was hoping that by hanging around you folks, it would help my educative process. please note, that i have yet to make my dslr purchase.

been looking at a couple of manual prime lenses in this range. i've noticed a sharp increase of price from f2 to f1.7 to f1.4 to f1.2. the f1.2 seems to be out of range of my pocket book and the f1.4 is in reach, but it seems that the f1.7 is as inexpensive as it gets. my main photo subject will be my daughter. many photo ops present themselves at home and at night in lower light situations. is the f1.4 necessary for my purposes or just overkill. i want as fast a lens as i can get - at least i think i do.

i really like using my dad's spotmatic and i don't think that i'll mind manually metering and focusing on the new digital body. i also really like how budget friendly those older lenses are.

Your answers have helped straighted out a couple of things for me. As of yet I have no gear - and as I am most interested in obtaining prime lenses for my k100d, what upgrade path would you suggest I follow after purchasing my k100d body? - providing that i can find just the body. I'm sure that my dad won't let me just have his lenses. Also, I am sure my wife would really be upset if I didn't get her a fully automatic lens for this body - maybe i should just get the kit and this would satisfy this need.
Lastly - or maybe not - if i like the look of film shots using a 50mm - should I be leaning towards something like a 35mm?

newbie post here...
just a few questions.
quick preface. i really like my dads spotmatic. i am about to jump into my first dslr and i am seriously considering the k100d. in attempting to educate myself on lens backwards compatibility, i have arrived at a couple of questions.
please correct me if i my understanding of what i have read is wrong, but when shooting with older lenses, is it true that one will not obtain the same width of angle of view?
for example, if i take the 50mm prime lens from my dads spotmatic, what can i expect as a result on my k100d?
i have read that it becomes a 70-some-mm lens - but in my mind it would still retain the shallower depth of field but the ccd will capture a width of angle of a 70-some-mm lens. again correct me if i am wrong.
i have read that if i were to use the 50mm lens off of my dad's spotmatic, that metering might be a chore, but no more of a chore than metering on the spotmatic - correct? can someone explain to me how it is done on the k100d, please?
