KP powered by AA batteries?

This is not true, It doesn't last as long, but hardly unusable. I've had the KP (and K-50) out on several Winter hikes (usually just 2-3 hours) and have never had that problem, but I still carried a couple extra in my pocket and occasionally would change a battery if needed. The KP uses the same native battery as the K-50.

I learned Photoshop years ago. Photoshop can do about anything you need with photos and graphics, and there are many different ways to go about it. Lightroom was created to simplify Photoshop for photography work, it’s really a different interface for the same application, although they may have morphed in different ways. Even Lightroom had several versions, yhrer is Lightroom Classic, which I prefer because it gives me more control over organization and I like the tools better. There is also a cloud version that organizes photos for you, and this version has models for tablets and phones. All of these versions, Photoshop, and several other apps are included in the Adobe photography plan. I would prefer not to pay a subscription, but none of the many other options I’ve tried came anywhere close to having the features and ease of use of Lightroom. It’s designed to create efficient workflows, and once you get yourself setup, you don’t need to spend time using it. Much like my Pentax cameras, I’ll never use all of the things it can do, but I’m very pleased with what I do use.

Looks like a film to me, does it have a protective screen over it? I assume you have tried cleaning the screen. I don’t think it is in the display. Can you see it when the camera is off, probably would have to shine a light over it.

I don't shoot a lot of handheld in museums, but when I have the combination of the DA20-40 and KP has done well for me.

Zoom lenses from those times are not known to be the strongest lenses. I haven't seen many good zooms from the MF era, Pentax or other manufacturers. I do have the M 40-80, it's a solidly built lens with an odd range. I haven't really used it enough to judge it, but it cost me $16.62. I have a 35-70 in the F series that is very good, but I haven't used any other 35-70. Unfortunately when we buy older lenses, there is no way of knowing what the lens has been through. I have had a few MF Pentax primes that were beat up and some that are exceptional.

If you weren't happy with the 21 get the DA 20-40, after having it for a while I forgot about my desires for a 21, no reason for it.

When would you use AF-S (Discuss)

This nails it. I would also add that even when not recomposing, sometimes there are other things like leaves moving in the wind, birds flying through that could cause refocusing in AF-C. I have user modes set up with both methods, the one with AF-S has a single focus spot, the AF-C has multiple. But of course sometimes situations make me change on the fly, which is pretty easy.

If you are looking to replace the 16-50 with a Pentax lens, I suggest the DA20-40 Ltd. I was using a Sigma 17-50/2.8 but wanted something with weather resistance for a trip to London. I bought the 20-40 and never used the Sigma again. It's a limited lens so it has that special image quality. I don't miss the 17-19 and 41-50 lengths at all. I shoot a lot of nature and landscapes, this is my go to if I'm not shooting wildlife. It did fabulous on the streets of London too, even handheld at night. I've had it over five years now and it's one of the beat lens decisions I've made, the others would be the DA*00 and DA 55-300PLM, the three are what I use the most.

I've got no problems buying from Amazon (not third party vendors), they have a good return policy if you have any problems. Maybe Amazon UK is not as reliable?

Sandisk or Lexar , the last ones I bought in October were Lexar 64GB Professional 1800x UHS-II SDXC (GOLD Series), because there was a good price at B&H. I prefer Sandisk but the Lexar have been fine. Just buy from a reputable source like Adorama, B&H, or Amazon (as long as it is sold by Amazon and not a third party). You may want to check the speeds your specific camera can use. You can use faster cards than you need, but don’t get cards so slow the big you down.

Ball Head or 3 Way Pan/Tilt Head

I’ve been using a good sized Induro ball head for years and it pretty quick and easy to use, I also have a Mephoto ball head that is easy. And I have a Sirui ball head that is difficult to use, the difference is the Sirui has a knob where the others have levers. A lever just makes it easier to tighten.

I’ve thought about trying a pan tilt head, so this is an interesting thread to learn from. Plus I woul Locke to have a big enough lens to need a gimbal, but I probably wouldn’t use it, lol.
Concluding my tiny bit of advice, whatever you choose, levers work better than knobs.

This is an interesting challenge, I’m at my oldest son’s house right now on an Easter visit so I don’t have anything with me but my favorite lenses that fit into my sling bag. I’m not really sure about my least favorite, I guess you could equate that to least used. Probably the least used is the M 40-80 and the Super Takumar 150 f4. I just don’t have a use for them, they are awkward for using in the type of shooting I normally do. I Lao find the 35 and 50 lengths not normally useful, I’m sure that would be different if I had a K-1. I have the DA 35 2.4, a clinically sharp lens, I only seem to use it for shooting small object in a light tent which is rare. I have a few 50’s, a Super-Takumar 50/1.4 which sits unused, F59/1.7, which is very slightly used, and Sigma macro 50/2.8, which get some use and is incredibly sharp.

I do take some landscapes at 35mm, but the DA 20-40 does that way better than the DA35 and is more versatile.

I’ll get home Monday and if I get the chance I’ll take some sample shots with those lenses.

Lens decision: wide angle lens for landscapes on K-1 II

I shoot a lot of landscapes, but I don’t have a K-1 or any of those lenses. I shoot with a KP and K-3iii and lenses from 15-420mm for landscapes. My widest angle are a DA15 and DA20-40. I use the 20-40 because of the versatility, plus it is just a better lens than the 15.

So, with your choices I would be inclined to go for the 15-30, since it covers a good range and apparently produces excellent IQ.

Urgent plea - Problem with O-GPS1 on K-70

^This first. If that doesn't resolve it, make sure your indicator lamp is checked to on in the camera menu, make sure you gently pressure the GPS into the hot shoe while "fixing" it, remove and reseat the battery. Change the shooting mode on the camera and try again - that should not make a difference, but try it anyway.

Once the gps is connected and turned on, the indicator lamp should light up on your camera's rear screen before it is calibrated. If you have the indicator on, and it does not show up once the GPS is on, I think the GPS may have a problem.

Please keep us updated!

I haven't been on a group photowalk in a few years. What I did like about them was seeing how different people would shoot the same subject. It seemed like more than half of the crowd would stand in the same spot and use a similar lens. I would also do a little experiment, like to go shoot something where people could see me there, and then see how many came down and shot the same thing. But anyway most of these had a group on Flickr and you could go see the images, and then see the creativity. They were fun, and the best part was sometimes that got you access to places you wouldn't normally have.

Finding it tough going…

"poor battery life" is what you want to make of it. It's not a big battery so it's pretty easy to have a spare in your pocket. I did shoot with mine Friday morning and took 70 exposures, just left the battery in the camera, I probably took 29 pictures this morning before I had to change it. That's not a lot of exposures, but they were all shot on a tripod, so in liveview and many were long exposures, up to 30 seconds. But I'm used to it since I've had the same battery in two other cameras, i just carry a spare battery. I'm not used to a touchscreen except on my iphone and ipad, so I'm not missing anything, but I get it when you get used to something and it's gone, it is an adjustment. The KP has kind of a following, I have two of them, one of them I broke the mode dial on and it can only be used in shutter priority, the rear screen went out too, fortunately I had the third dial set up for different types of autofocus and still use it, mostly when I'm kayaking. I just can't see getting rid of it.

This is a little contradictory, since they bothered you enough to switch systems. I'm not sure what Canon DSLR you had, it doesn't really matter, but you bought into a really old Pentax (2010), I don't expect it to keep up with the 2018 mirrorless M50. I'm not sure why the R guys want put you down, sounds like they would unless you have the same camera as them. I know there are some fine cameras in the R line, but several "lesser" or "crippled" models.

The newest Pentax ASPC (K-3III) is four autofocus generations newer than the K-5, still not the best on the market, but it's pretty good. I'm not going to say the K-3III is the best camera out there, I certainly haven't tried them all, even if I did the learning curve for any system will take a little time to learn. I've used Pentax for several years, know the system, and it gives me the results that I expect, with image quality second to none. People tend to get to know a system and then anything else seems maybe not right, until they get to know it. I'm not saying this to say you haven't given the K-5 enough time, I think you have, I'm not sure where you go from here.
