The forthcoming Pentax Mirrorless Camera

Unlike some people, I'm willing to wait and see what Pentax comes up with regarding the NC-1. I'm not expecting miracles out of it, that it would be enough to make us throw away our DSLRs. The only 1/2.3" sensor I've worked with lately is the one on the GXR's P10 unit, and while it isn't as clean image noise-wise as experienced photographers would like it to be, it's good enough for daily use and for less demanding hobbyists who would rather have the portability than supreme image quality.

The lone concern I have as of now for this system is how much (or how little) DOF control a user would have, owing to the small sensor. While I don't need a Noctilux f/0.95 on a 35mm camera kind of DOF control, it would be nice to use aperture control for more than just a means to control ISO and shutter speed to one's liking. We'll see.

Samsung NX Getting More Serious

Well, at least Samsung isn't going into the whole mirrorless derby with mediocre effort, I'll give them that. For existing NX system users (though admittedly, I haven't seen one in my area thus far), the promise of such rapid lens development is a positive for them.

I wouldn't worry so much about their old sensor, they'll eventually make better ones - I think the worrisome point in the NX system is the lack of third-party support I've seen thus far.

The local prices here are pretty tempting, though. There's an NX100 bundle here that's selling for just over $500, and it includes the body, 20-50mm lens, 20mm pancake, and a small external flash. If I weren't saving up for some WR lenses, I'd be willing to try this one. :)

Well, here's the announcement of Yvon's new entrepreneurial venture: PENTAX DSLRs: What happens when three entrepreneurs get together? In our case, you get great DSLRs ancillary equipment and you get AlettA Photographic.

It doesn't say anything regarding products, just that they have industrial-grade machines and that they're gonna churn out quality, made in the US gear (perhaps taking an indirect shot at all the China-made accessories on eBay?).

No product announcement, though.

Pentax EVIL NC-1 has smaller sensor than APS-C - your opinion?

The picture he paints are more of his own guesses and hypotheses than anything really, based on recent news regarding m4/3. Around page 3 or so, I started skipping over stuff, looking for new info he might have received (the whole article spans a many number of pages). I ended up skipping over the rest of the article.

As someone who has m4/3 gear, I certainly look forward to seeing more good products come out from Olympus and Panasonic. At the same time, I'm also interested to see what Nikon and Pentax will come up with. I don't mind if it ends up to be a 2.5x crop, as I think I'd still be able to have enough DOF control with such a sensor. I'm more interested in how much smaller they can make that system to be in terms of overall size and weight, and how much they're looking to charge for those items.

That move is helping Hoya keep Pentax in the black. Some people will always cast doubt, that non-Japanese and non-German factories makes shoddy equipment when the truth is that any product is susceptible to defects regardless of the country in which the said item is made. It all boils down to quality control.

Personal experience:
- My MIV Pentax lens works well
- I've Olympus lenses MIC, both are working perfectly
- I bought a Tammy 28-75 in HK, I had a choice of MIC or MIJ (store had both in stock). MIJ one front-focused while MIC one focused properly. I went with MIC, and the lens has yet to fail.

Anecdotal experience:
- Sigma lenses, all are MIJ, and yet we hear many anecdotes of Sigma lenses misfocusing and failing. Not to say Sigma is bad, but that there still are bad apples (as with any company).

Will I buy MIC? Sure, as long as the one I'm buying tests well. Will I buy MIV? Ditto. MIJ? Sure. I'll buy lenses regardless of location where it's made, as long as it does what it's supposed to do when I test it. I suspect Klaus feels the same way, which is why he probably put the MIV versus MIJ test at the bottom of his priorities.

Just my 2 cents. :)

Yup, same thing.

You'll appreciate the image stabilization, trust me. Go with K100D and up, with the exception of the SR-less K110D. If it helps, there's a K10D sitting in KEH's stockroom (follow the links from here). It's priced at $275 and it's rated condition is BGN. From my experience dealing with KEH, they're conservative with their ratings, and the BGN lenses I bought from them are oftentimes better than a lot of self-rated 8++ or 9++ lenses at eBay. Hope this helps. :)

Sigma Starting to Produce Weather Sealed Lenses?

This is great news, indeed. I hope they'll eventually get to bringing a sealed 17-50 or even just their 17-70. I know I'll buy one in a heartbeat. :)

I had thought of getting a 16-50, but the numerous stories of people here with failed copies do concern me.

Thanks Jez! I tried responding to everyone who replied thus far. Of course, hard to do that now, since there are many who apparently miss the K200D! :D

Every once in a while, I think about buying into Nikon, but I'm really spoiled with Pentax's SR, so I hold off. A lot of my friends got Nikons, though, so if ever I need to use a Nikon (never felt the need thus far), there's always one I could borrow in a pinch. There's a good deal for a Fuji S2 Pro in local forums, though, and it's tempting me. :P

+1

The SR alone makes Pentax a good value proposition among camera models. With Olympus' move to mirrorless nearly complete (I have doubts they'll release any new 4/3 DSLR moving forward), only Sony remains as the other DSLR system with in-body stabilization.

And, if I remember correctly, Pentax is the only system to have weather-sealed kit lenses. The first iteration of Olympus' 14-54 was the first sealed kit lens, but they've since replaced it with a non-sealed 14-42.

My 2 cents. :)

Personally, I think it's something Pentax could've continued to separate itself from other makers. I think they had this strategy about being the system of choice for the adventurous type of photographers (along with their nearly-abuse-proof Optio). I wonder what happened to that.

I just might consider that as soon as funds present itself. Hohoho. :D

Just the K-r + sealing is enough for me, really. I learned to live without the top LCD, though I won't complain about its inclusion if ever. :D

Well, we can hope some genius hacker can make a custom firmware with lens adjust feature enabled? :)

Good on you guys! I wish I had mine still. Curse my fickle-mindedness back then. :P

At ISO 100/200, you really can't go wrong with any of the fine DSLRs in any system nowadays (and even back then).

I guess that's pretty much it, really. :D

It's amazing then, it's still amazing now. Of course, the photographer had something to do with it, too. ;) I haven't tried the K-5 myself to see how the two stack IQ-wise, though.

The K10D is also one heck of a camera. I'm in the same boat as you, wanting to buy either K10D or K200D. The good deals are mostly abroad, though, so taxes and shipping also factors into the equation where I am. I'm adamant about getting one of the two, though. :)

I can say from experience with the K100D that the K-x's build quality is similar. I don't see it conking out on me anytime soon. The weather-sealed ones are obviously better, but I have trust in the newer lower-end models. Your mileage may vary, though. :)

I hope you can get your girlfriend into photography. It would lessen the effort needed to explain why you bought a DA* lens or Limited. LOL. :D

If one's particular about batteries, the decision could swing either way. The K10D drew raves back then (along with people wanting more from it), and I guess a lot of people have moved on to the newer models (or other systems) which is why we're not hearing as much about them anymore. Most here would say good things about the K10D if asked specifically, though. Personally, I got into Pentax's system initially because of it. :)

Well, glad to see I'm not the only one missing the K200D. Reading your replies, yeah, the availability of the K10D when the K200D hit stores probably hurt its sales some. I'm on the lookout for either in my side of the pond, though I think I'd prefer the K200D if only because it will use the same batteries as I have on my K-x, even though it lacks some pro features.

Here's one of my favorite photos that I took with my old K200D. It's certainly not the best (it may not even be PPG quality), but I love it just the same.

I just thought I'd check and see if anyone else misses the K200D. I believe it's one of the poorly-received Pentax DSLRs, owing to a small buffer and pricing (if I recall correctly, we were all spoiled with the K10D back then).

Personally though, weather-sealing and AA batteries (with apologies to the Li-ion supporters :D ) for an entry-level model is pretty amazing. Pentax already has WR kit lenses, so I'm hoping they'd come around to release another entry-level DSLR with sealing. With the better rep Pentax is getting these days from mainstream media, maybe a new K200D would turn some heads and be a viable travel DSLR.

What do you think? :D

Yeah, the image quality is what keeps most people here in the system. I'm undecided yet if I'll get Pentax's 17-70 or Sigma's 17-70 (faster on the wide end, a bit slower on the tele end - is this the lens you're referring to?). I'm thinking that with the good IQ (personal opinion) I'm getting at ISO 3200 and 6400 (I'll even go to 12800 willingly), I may not need f/2.8 all that much, though still considering it.

Old lenses are a hoot! I'm sure you'd be able to get some gems for cheap. Go for it. :D

I agree, the AF speed is impressive. I'm sure Nikon can Canon's AF systems are better (I haven't tried their latest and greatest yet), but for my own modest needs, well, it's more than enough. Definitely faster than the previous generation of Pentax DSLRs, for sure.

You might come to regret caving into your sister's pressure. LOL. But yeah, high-five for the K-x! Or fist bump. :D

antzutd: Thanks and congrats on your own purchase! From the limited time I had shooting my new K-x (why does work have to get in the way of hobbies? :D ), I'm floored by the image quality. For my relatively modest needs, I'm even okay with using ISO 12800. I'm sure you'll enjoy it. Consider the white version, though. It's the one regret I have. :)

Salty: You know it! For the record, though, I always kept an eye on Pentax developments even while I was away. Glad to see that Hoya's taking good care of our investments. :) And yes, I will take your suggestion with regards to reveling in the K-x's high ISO performance. I'm ecstatic with it right now. :D

BirdDude007: Agreed. I haven't used an ME Super yet, though I hear good things about it. Whenever I get the film itch, I still have a KX on hand, with the meter still working and all. It's hard to go back when you get used to shooting with the speed of a DSLR (regardless of brand) - at least you don't have to wait for negatives. :D

specbil98: Take your time, friend. Though I'll make a point that Pentax does have intuitive ergonomics, so it won't be a steep learning curve for an eager learner such as yourself. ;) The folks here in PF are awesome people and willing to extend a hand towards people looking for help. We're on a pay-it-back-and-forward basis, from my experience. :)

Well, I just got myself a K-x and with that, I'm officially a Pentaxian again. I used to be an occasional poster/frequent lurker back then. I got drawn in by the E-P1 and thought I didn't need DSLRs anymore, so I sold all of my Pentax gear, though I kept a 50/1.4 (for sentimental purposes, really, as it was a gift) and an M42 converter (forgot that I had it).

Well, the E-P1 is still a fine camera, and it's still here with me, but there are times when I just feel like I miss looking through an optical viewfinder, and honestly, the lenses available for m43 are still paltry and expensive (for me).

I also miss Pentax's image engine and exposure metering, and oftentimes I'd open up my photo archives and look wistfully at the photos I took using a Pentax. Maybe it's a matter of me regressing as a photographer (which I would not object to), but I will say that some of my better work was done with a Pentax. Maybe it's simply a matter of being more comfy with Pentax ergonomics which made me more enthusiastic about taking photos. But anyway, put it simply, I miss shooting with a Pentax.

So yeah, I bought the K-x yesterday, after deliberating if maybe I should go with other systems (I did have a relatively clean slate). For the record, I've shot with most DSLR systems save Sony/KM, so I'm mostly familiar with each of their quirks. As with the K10D that started me off with Pentax, though, I still feel that Pentax offers the most bang for the buck, and as mentioned earlier, I love the photos I took with a Pentax.

Well, the AF speed was a revelation, being used to the slower AF in the K20D. The images, fantastic, as was to be expected. The familiar ergonomics are still there, and I'm quite pleased that the metering using manual lenses are more accurate than I remembered it. I have no regrets with the K-x save for one: I wish I got the white model. :D

One last thing. I miss the K10D and I'll probably get one once a good deal presents itself. With weather people predicting more rains where I am, it won't be simply a matter of nostalgia for me. :)

Anyway, I'll look for an empty seat in this forum and try to fit in once again. I see a whole lot of new faces and a lot of familiar ones. Hello and good day to you all. It's great to be back. :)

I appreciate the review, though the author seems to have confused the K-x with the K-7 in a couple of sentences, mentioning K-7 when he probably was referring to the K-x. Or he probably lifted a couple of sentences from the review straight-up, since there are commonalities between the K-x and K-7 in some areas. :)

I believe Novoflex has an adapter for m4/3 that can take in K-mount lenses and enable the camera to control the aperture for newer lenses that have no manual aperture rings. The price is pretty steep, though ($293 at B&H), and I have yet to find someone who has actually used it and posted their findings on the internet.

No doubt, the adapter rings will come, Pentax assistance or no. Should be interesting to see what Ricoh comes up with.

Would it apply to him? From how I read the FTC ruling, it mostly covers false claims and reviews that I assume are positive in nature since the ruling talks about disclosure of gifts and payments from a company to a blogger/reviewer. I believe it should be amended so it would also encompass scathing remarks and put downs made towards products that the author has never handled in his life.

Then again, that's easily remedied by the hard-to-prove-or-disprove "I tried one in the store today".
