If wanting to have a 50mm 'normal' lens (for FF sensor format) with autofocus capability, you can look for the F 50mm f1.7 as well. If wanting to experiment with ultrawide, consider the FAj 18-35mm ultrawide zoom. On the longer side, I;m still experimenting with th F 100-300mm telephoto zoom, so 'the jury is still out'. But, it's surprisingly inexpensive.

My rule of thumb for lens hoods is; round for rotating front lenses; square or petal for fixed front ones. And, get one (or 2) made of a material a bit softer than the lens: you won't want a hard hood transmit the crash energy to the lens focus and/or zoom mechanism, misaligning or even breaking it.

I don't know if anyone ever thought about this, but let's assume the following: one of us is taking a hike with a Pentax DSLR camera with telephoto zoom lens and another brand mirrorless camera with another telephoto zoom and a sudden event happens. He or she may be in the need of scanning their surroundings to look for for some help near or far and the only 'binocular' or 'monocular equivalent' available is one of the cameras he or she is using. Then, another event: batteries died on both cameras. Which one will be more useful? A device that is as dead as a cinder block or another instrument that at least can be pressed to service as a monocular even without power to locate that help? Just thinking...

I agree with the idea that, for APS-C format, 50 to 85mm is a good range of lengths for closeup portraits, specially of women. Men closeup portraits can be shot with lengths between 35 and 40mm with good results. About apertures, anything f2.0 or wider is good as long as the focus to the most important feature (usually, the eyes) is accurate. For most of us still using the starter kit zoom lens with f3.5 or narrower aperture, practicing people closeups between 35 and 55mm is a starting alternative, as long as we are willing to put up with a brighter light (natural or artificial) or higher ISO (400 and up).

As others state here, attack the issue by cleaning lens and camera mount contacts. If you have access to another Pentax DA, FA, F or even A lens, try the other lens as well. Be sure to upload the photos of your SD card before formatting the SD card with the camera. Then, try that card again. If you still suspect the card, just replace it, I hope that all this helps you, framan.

Yep, the Chevy Nova urban legend must have been a bad joke. My father got a 1971 Nova, 250 (meaning 250 cubic inches) in-line six cylinder rear wheel drive coupe brand new in Puerto Rico after totaling a 1955 Chevy (another classic, which was reborn as a roadster race car for a few years after by the next owner) and he never had any worries with it for close to 30 years (by the way, my Pentax LX never gave me any trouble in tropics or frigid climates from early 1980s until around 2020. Call it LX+XL :) ).

Just in case I didn't miss something, try the following: if the LX has no film right now, remove the battery; install any manual flash unit on the hot-shoe; open the film back plate, set the shutter speed dial to X (1/75s), look at the film frame from the back and shoot. You should see the full frame lighted up. If not or if you even don't hear the shutter tripping, you have a major repair to do. If do see the full frame, try same test at 1/125s and if it works, you should see roughly half of the frame. Each next shutter speeds shows half of previous section of frame. Do the same test at next speed up to 1/2000s. If this wokrs, the issue may be battery or electronics. Even if it is, you still have a useable LX that works from 1/75s to 1/2000s... but without exposure metering. Give this a try.

...And another one. I have a K10D and will like to add another body (may be a K5ii), but I keep most of my FF lenses because I shoot the occasional film and wish that I can afford in the future a K1 ("Somewhere over the rainbow...♫). For now, I only intend to add an APS-C Ultra-wide lens to my arsenal. If you can get the K1, enjoy,,, and share some of your pictures with us.

Nice takes, pepperberry farm! I have one of them, too, But haven't given it too much use and it needs some repair. It used to be one of my favorite 'wedding' lenses.

Regarding weddings, you really have to love to try them. If you have a knack for photojournalism (aka "the unpredictable"), really care about your subjects, both photographically and as people and have backups for your hardware (and files, once the wedding is over), you should be fine. Now practice, practice and (did my memory fail?), practice beforehand.

I used to have an MX ("I won't cry...I won't cry.") in addition to my LX and exchanged screens between them for a short time and notice some exposure deviation, but can't remember how far. Otherwise, both focused OK.

Dear ratfancy: consider having the largest memory card you can get and take 'bursts' of photos instead of one photo of each subject if lighting allows it. One (or more) should come out at the right focus. This is a commercial photographer's secret.

I second The Squirrel Mafia. I used to shoot RAW only, but you cannot share RAW easily and I ended up doing in-camera processing. So, RAW+ coupled with a big memory card is a good way to go for a beginner. Besides that, you can always save those occasional so-so RAW files for further computer processing (you'll be surprised what the Pentax Laboratory software can do to improve those so-so shots).

Any of the ZX/MZ series with single digit numbers are good for what you want. I have seen a few SF/SFX single digit cameras popping up on ebay and craigslist, but double-check them for functions and weight.

Yes, Tickolas. Give it a try with film. When you are confident with it, see if you can get a flash unit that works in TTL (not P-TTL) mode like the AF 540FGZ or the AF 280T and try it with that flash. The flash unit should read the light OTF using the same camera sensor. Enjoy.
