How about an FAj 18-35mm ultra wide (for FF sensor format) zoom lens? If you can find one, give it a try.

If wanting to have a 50mm 'normal' lens (for FF sensor format) with autofocus capability, you can look for the F 50mm f1.7 as well. If wanting to experiment with ultrawide, consider the FAj 18-35mm ultrawide zoom. On the longer side, I;m still experimenting with th F 100-300mm telephoto zoom, so 'the jury is still out'. But, it's surprisingly inexpensive.

My rule of thumb for lens hoods is; round for rotating front lenses; square or petal for fixed front ones. And, get one (or 2) made of a material a bit softer than the lens: you won't want a hard hood transmit the crash energy to the lens focus and/or zoom mechanism, misaligning or even breaking it.

Also, recheck your AF lever setting (AF-Single refuses to let you shoot until image is in focus: the, it shoots), subject illumination (these lenses may not autofocus well if subjects is too dark or has too little contrast) and ISO (set it to Auto ISO with a wide range). The lens is a good starting point: just use it for the next few months and then review which subjects you like to shoot most and it should point you gradually to both your style and whatever additional lenses or accessories you may need in the future to improve your style.

Having a KX handy may be super. Otherwise, get a K1000 if totally new to film photography or a KM (it adds self-timer to shoot selfies). Even Sears (remember that) sold a few K-mount cameras. In a related matter, who repairs LX camaras now that Eric won't?

Thanks for thread, guys. I may try getting a used flash unit and this will help me to choose between Metz used units and Pentax.

Oh friends... I came to regret getting rid of the KX I used to have. :( Somehow, It felt right in my hands and adjusting shutter speeds was smoother than with the MX, that I used to have as well.

I used the LX+AF280T combo in weddings many years ago and it worked fine. But as Wheatfield explained: be in the lookout for back lights... and mirrors in the back of subjects.

I don't know if anyone ever thought about this, but let's assume the following: one of us is taking a hike with a Pentax DSLR camera with telephoto zoom lens and another brand mirrorless camera with another telephoto zoom and a sudden event happens. He or she may be in the need of scanning their surroundings to look for for some help near or far and the only 'binocular' or 'monocular equivalent' available is one of the cameras he or she is using. Then, another event: batteries died on both cameras. Which one will be more useful? A device that is as dead as a cinder block or another instrument that at least can be pressed to service as a monocular even without power to locate that help? Just thinking...

I like Rock, although I have to hear the lyrics a little much better to get an appreciation of this song. I definitely liked the music and the way it was filmed relates well to the 'phone / portrait' format that most youtube audience by phone use. I got inspired to try more video on my K-70. Thanks a lot, Ryan.

The Tamron 28-300mm f3.5-6.3 XR DI zoom lens which collapses to less than 5" at 28mm and the Pentax FA 28-80mm f3.5-4.7 zoom lens whose power zoom option worked with my K10D.

I agree with the idea that, for APS-C format, 50 to 85mm is a good range of lengths for closeup portraits, specially of women. Men closeup portraits can be shot with lengths between 35 and 40mm with good results. About apertures, anything f2.0 or wider is good as long as the focus to the most important feature (usually, the eyes) is accurate. For most of us still using the starter kit zoom lens with f3.5 or narrower aperture, practicing people closeups between 35 and 55mm is a starting alternative, as long as we are willing to put up with a brighter light (natural or artificial) or higher ISO (400 and up).

I agree with doing the exercising of switches and dials first. If you haven’t done this after that yet, write down your chosen custom camera settings, do a full reset of the camera, test it before entering your previous custom settings, input those settings to the camera and test it again. Check your firmware version as well: if you have never upgraded your firmware before, do that carefully one version step at a time (for example: from version 1.00 to 1.10…). Hope this helps you too.

I used to have a Tamron AF 28-300mm f/3.5-6.3 XR Di LD Aspherical (IF) Macro Ultra Zoom Lens for Pentax Digital SLR Cameras (Model A061P) and most of my results at 300mm (around 450mm equivalent on my APS-C DSLR camera body) were satisfying, although with a bit of pincushion distortion, notable only if subjects were distant cityscapes. If your subjects are human or nature, you can give it a try on the K-1.
