Please help me kick these ideas around in my head.

For that budget, pick up a K3III - you'll find the autofocus is no slouch. Also pick up one of the newer motorized-focus lenses and you'll be hooked again.

Sony is schizophrenic. Their tech is good but they never seem to leave the wading pool when supporting it. You want to stay in the deep end.

I know my Flickr albums are in dire need of updating.
Here's a series along the Fox River, while walking the dogs we saw an eagle on an obvious hunting dive. I dropped the leash, raised the camera, turned it on and started shooting. Despite being badly backlit, the focus nailed the images in that series and it was an "achievement unlocked" moment for me.

Yes, DNA sequencing and more technical methods are re-arranging all of biology into new clades. There is a bewildering array of subspecies and populations within a species. You can get as deep into the woods as you want when you start studying any subject.

Put key words in the Marketplace here. 70mm 40mm 21mm
The PF Marketplace is the most reputable place to buy.
I have the 21 and 40. I use the 21 roughly 90X more than the 40. I don't think I'd use the 70, but I'm still tempted to buy one.

The 21 is a perfect FL to use indoors, it's super-sharp and a pleasure to use. the 40 is probably useful outdoors and as a portrait lens.

All good advice here. I have a bunch of lenses, but if I'm taking one or there's a threat of rain I'm packing my 18-135. I have been out in rainy conditions with that lens and the AF-201 and both have been fine. They're a solid pairing. The 18-135 at 70ish is pretty darn sharp and I really like its motorized focus.

Achievement Unlocked! Bald Eagle successfully pulling a small-mouthed bass from the Fox River. Right time, right place, right equipment. Severly Backlit, but we were a LOT closer than the big cameras across the river. DA300 on K3III, handheld. There are a few more in this series if you want to have a look.

Trumpeter Swans! First time I've ever seen them, and this pair has set up camp in our humble town for nearly a month now. They're grouping with three Mute Swans, which aren't rare but slightly unusual on the river. Yes, of course, they're backlit but at least this day was sunny.

For the space I have, I went with a 90deg rotated case for the game rig, so the I/O is on top, allowing a visible panel on the right side. That I/O on top is so convenient, I think I'll use that type of case for all new builds.

Do you build computer rigs for fun or profit?
I built a couple new rigs about 2 years ago, it's a lot of fun but since a good rig lasts a long time, I don't get to do it too often.

Yes, the K5 has a wonderful sensor. It's very film-like and serene, IMHO. I haven't parted with mine yet, but I don't use it very often anymore.
I keep wanting to go out and do some real night-time photography, thanks for sharing yours.

Advice for upgrade - K3 or K3iii?

K3III should have been given a new name, IMHO. It's not just an upgrade of the K3 original.
I do notice a difference between the K3II and K3III when doing the same photography. In the field I'll use the III with my macro and II with my telephoto, but this time of year the III gets the telephoto for walks along the river etc.

They're both a big upgrade from older models, though..

You'll see a lot on my Flickr, including a recent series of an eagle pulling a small-mouthed bass out of the river.

In the field I carry two bodies, one with an FA100mm macro and ring flash, and one with a DA300mm. I've thought about acquiring a Sigma 180. I've played with an older 1.4X teleconverter. I don't think either will work as well as that DA300 up close (4+feet away) for detailed shots. Plenty of critters don't want me pointing things at them up close. If it's more reach you're looking for, consider that lens. If it's more magnification - be prepared to pay.

This, for instance, was shot with the 300:

I'm amazed at just how resilient butterflies are. They get so beaten up through their adult lives, and are eaten by almost everything as larvae.

Here's an unusual little moth. Sorry if it looks a bit soft. The flower is a Daisy Fleabane, a very small Aster family plant. Flowers are about 1cm across, including petals. A little breeze makes it difficult!
Alan and I had never seen one of these, they're pretty unusual critters.

And here's a busy girl. A Hoplitis genus bee. I've never been able to get great photos - as soon as they leave the tubular flowers they seem to favor, they take off at full speed. This was pure good timing luck on my part.

I enjoy the 01 prime lens, it turns the Q into something like a rangefinder. You don't even really need to look at the screen, just point and shoot.

I'd agree on looking for the older versions if you're going to go all-manual. I use an FA-100 in the field and the lens switch for manual/automatic focus is very convenient.
I shoot f/16 regularly and f/20 occasionally.
If you're not using the autofocus you can get the same optics as a manual lens.

Stop it down, use a flash and you can severely underexpose the background.
